what they say or not, one has to ask is it the place of the moderator to correct the statements of the particpants given the setting or is it simply to facilitate the time keeping, clarify questions, and keep the debaters in check.

The government wasn't 'giving weapons away'. For the most part, it was watching straw buyers who were legally buying weapons and then transferring them to drug-gangs.
