Have you tried the demo? I wasn't a fan after playing that.

If you tried the demo and liked it then disregard.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I just canceled my order and purchased Uncharted.

Stoked to get my copy of Unit 13 tomorrow. Loved the demo, played the one mission like a dozen times using the option to randomize the enemy locations. Seems like it will be a whole lot of fun in coop.

I hope I didn't disappoint you or anything. I know some people loved the demo and others like myself didn't get a good feel from it. Many people I know didn't even know they had a demo out there for it.

Wipeout got better with its first patch (I'm assuming you were using a demo unit which means no patching)

Yes, it was a demo unit that I was using. Quite honestly was shocked that Sony would want to show people anything in that state. The screen is really fantastic, didn't seem to have much else going for it

Off-screen rendering is always a really awkward thing to use, but unfortunately it's sort of a necessary evil to make things easy to compare.

MPixels/second- very easy to compare devices with different resolutions

If I remember right, there's something called "Z-buffer occlusion" that allows a GPU to skip rendering something that isn't visible on screen.

PowerVR uses tile based rendering- nothing that isn't visible gets drawn. Z buffer occlusion(traditional GPUs utilize this) will help out but a lot of it depends on how the sort order is handled(if the bench is set up to render things back to front it doesn't help you out much if at all, front to back it will help you out a *lot*- if it isn't sorted by the bench you end up somewhere in between).

That actually has me worried. Is the US version of Motorstorm RC going to be chock-full of ads?

Nope, it's actually pretty cool. Reminds me of the MicroMachines game that was on the NES actually. The only bit of advertising I've seen so far is the playable Scion iQ. Which is okay if you want to drive around the Fiat 500's ugly cousin.

I tried out Motorstorm RC earlier, and I didn't really like it much. The game reminds me a lot of Reckless Racing on iOS, and I just don't like top-down racers much, because I get all turned around, bamboozled or what have you! Also, making me use that god awful second control scheme the entire way around the track...!

So, this is a bit of an aside. I watched the trailer for the new Epic iOS game Infinity Blade: Dungeons. Some of the comments for it said things like "RIP Vita" and junk like that, but it made me think. Epic games stated that they're sticking to iOS, because they like the limited hardware set (compared to Android).

Now, if this is true, shouldn't we expect some (overpriced ) Vita ports from them given the hardware similarities?

Infinity Blade might be OK for a phone game but it will be crap compared to a good title for the vita. The comparisons are just dumb.

Also I find it funny that someone claimed it has power similar to a ps3 or xbox360. Sure it may have a 2048x1536 resolution but I can guarantee games won't be running at that resolution at a solid frame rate. To claim that because it has higher memory it will keep up is just nuts. Things like texture fill rate and all that matter as well. Its not even directly comparable since there won't be any real world benches available that run on everything. Its apple marketing at its finest, claiming its a 4 core system when in reality the gpu is quad. By their logic a tegra 3 is like 12 cores omg lol.

I played Motorsport and I thought it was pretty fun. Not bad for a free game and no advertising other than the "powered by scion" logo.

BTW Virge, I found a screen protector that actually does not affect the screen quality in any noticable way. It actually is a full body protector made by Hori. They are dirt cheap on ebay and fitament is near perfect.

I'm talking about the new Infinity Blade: Dungeons game... not the other two Infinity Blade games. The reason why I bring it up is because it looks much more like a console game that could be easily controlled with the Vita's physical controls.

Given the Vita's only dungeon crawler is Dungeon Hunter: Alliance, I think they could make do with a slightly better game.

I definitely think we'll see ports for popular mobile games end up on the Vita. Angry Birds doesn't appear in the Minis section of the Vita Store. That's a strong indication to me they'll be rereleasing it with touch screen support.

Epic doesn't create good games. They are good at licensing an engine for 5 years and that's about it. Everyone else under the sun has used it to make a game worth playing (Bioshock, Batman, Mass Effect, Gears of War).

Thing is...the game might look ok but it's not running the same details as you could get on an Xbox360, PS3, or PC. The bandwidth available and feature set of the iPad's hardware is still not up to snuff. Resolution and amount of memory aren't going to allow it to render real time light reflections, ambient occlusion, tessellation etc. UE3 is past it's prime if you ask me and has been handily outdone by Cryengine 2, and Frostbite 2. WHile I haven't seen the details of the new GPU, I'm willing to bet the texture fillrate falls way under the GPU in your Xbox360 when the numbers come out. According to what I've managed to find out it has a PowerVR SGX543MP4. Which would put out roughly 40million triangles a second. The GPU in the Xbox360 can do 500million. So it's definitely not as fast on paper. The PowerVR SGX543MP4 is rated at what, 7.2Gflops? The Xbox360 Xenos is 240Gflops.

What this means is Epic is full of crap and the new ipad won't be close to console performance in the GPU area. Or you could just not care like me and understand that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are established brands with established franchises. They aren't going anywhere and just because one developer thinks Apple is hot stuff because they can sell their old engine again, aren't worried. Not when you have games selling millions within weeks of release and a game like CoD making a billion dollars. Obviously MS, Sony, and Nintendo aren't seeing the billion dollar payout, but the developer who created the game isn't going anywhere soon. That means they can still expect gamers to want their consoles.

edit: Supposedly the PowerVR SGX543MP4 is the same chip used in the Vita as well as the new ipad (I hate calling it that lol). So overtake consoles? That's kind of a joke because Epic claims the new ipad is something special and outside of the screen resolution (that would get like 10fps) I don't see it.

Anybody regretting their purchase?

I don't get around to playing mine much, but it was kind of the same way with the PSP. I still enjoyed using it when I did pick it up, but I was never really engrossed with it. It probably also doesn't help that I don't need to carry it around all the time that I think I might need a diversion. Phones work so much better for that since I'll have it on me anyway.

Well, anyway... I consider the Vita a fairly small purchase overall. If anything, I might regret buying so many games early on. While I may eventually play them, by the time I get around to it, the whole Buy Two Get One Free might not be much of a deal (because the games are discounted enough by that time).

Oh well, I don't really care overall though.

Not at all, I've been using it quite a bit actually. Like Aikouka though, I somewhat regret buying so many damn games. I've not put any significant time into half of them.

I just wish they'd expand the PSP compatibility and add PSOne support already.

I play mine for at least an hour every day. I like being able to fire up a quick game or two.

Have the deals pretty much run dry on this for now? I'm getting a gadget itch and thought this would be a good choice, and at least 1/2 the price of a new ipad

I haven't really seen any deals like there were during launch week. I've read, though, that there have been some good deals on the hardware at Amazon Warehouse....might be a good place to look if you don't mind refurbished/like-new products.

I kind of do, but in the first week I had it, I hadn't put it down because of Uncharted. They need more games like that! It was so convenient just picking it up and playing it for a few moments before I go to sleep... I do regret buying rayman tho.. i just can't get into it... Maybe I'm just over my platforming days?

Or Maybe the plat former just doesn't seem "awesome" to me..

I don't regret buying it. You have to look at the Vita for what it is; an updated PSP. I've got a few arcade style games on it which I play at work during breaks. I watch Netflix videos on it too if I'm near Wi-Fi. They look fantastic on its OLED screen.

The thing with Sony's portables is they haven't really developed any exclusive games for them. Just spinoffs or ports of existing franchises from the PS2 and PS3. The PSP had the same problem. There is Monster Hunter but that never caught on in the Americas like it did in Japan.

Sony needs to poor money into developing first class exclusives to give the Vita its own Pokemon. Or at least make the experience unique for the device and stop trying to copy and port console games.

Coles Notes: They need to differentiate the Vita from the consoles for it to be a success.
