I'm glad I purchased my 2x 6970's, there is not enough performance boost for the current price at $550. I paid $600 for my 6970's and running at 2560x1600, I'm afraid that a single 7970 wouldn't let me max out most modern games at my resolution.

1125mhz on stock voltage... oh my goodness. This card could be stunning with voltage control and watercooling. We will just have to wait and see once we get voltage control on this bad boy.

Also it is important to see how this architecture scales with overclocking. The 69xx cards didn't scale very well when overclocked.

EDIT: Legit reviews got it to 1165!!! 26% overclock the netted a 21% improvement in Metro 2033 at 1080p with stock voltage. I want voltage and water on this thing now.

Anand's review left me feeling a bit meh on the 7970, but these overclocking results are making me drool a lot!

I feel like this is going to be X1800XT all over again. AMD will do an X1950XT style refresh with a healthy performance boost.

This will likely be the case. While the overclocking headroom had me gleeful, I will likely avoid this and wait for the respin/Kepler. No reason to upgrade from what I have. I will observe the overclocking from a distance.

Time to save up for 7950 CF to upgrade this ancient GTX280

That would be a massive upgrade to say the least

If you hurry n sell those 6970s, the WC setup should fit the 7970.

Have you seen how more beastly it is in CF vs competitors? Add the OC headroom and scaling on top of that.

has anyone seen MAX power consumption (furmark or OCCT) when overclocked anywhere?
whats the most this card can pull on stock voltage?

Yeah this is a deceiving card... At first I was like "meh, 28nm and this is all it can do?", but looking at the specifications and the overclock headroom, its pretty obvious AMD purposely picked a specific value that would allow the 7970 to take a comfortable lead over the 580 but still leave lots of potential for a refresh by the time the next geforce card shows up

Kinda lame for us customers, but oh well... Im expecting a beastly refresh in 6 months, kinda like 1800 > 1900

That oc headroom bodes well for 7950.
I might need to rethink my stance that those cards are meh after looking at stock performance.

Some people were reporting that 7970 draws less watts than stock 580 even when overclocked.

The OCing for this beast is insane. I'm hearing performance increases of 20% just by using stock voltages. o.o

It didn't replace the 4870 it replaced the 4890. So 30% increase vs 23% increase. It's still not bad and is within the margin of acceptance. Another 7% might have net you 1 FPS more...

"you took the words right out of my mouth"... I won't start singing meatloaf, though.

I was going to point out the same thing.

Great for those who want eye-finity. But, I'll pass until they get rid of the bezels. Until that time, this card caters specifically to less than 1% of enthusiests, who are themselves probably less than .25% of the population. AMD won't be selling many of these if this is the target they were aiming for.

With that said, I think this card is pretty decent. No question that if someone has $500-$600 to burn right now and they want a single GPU, this is the card to get. The 580 is nowhere near a competitive value at this point. They will have to drop it (580 GTX) to $349 if they want it to sell.

It's over. My 3 quarter gallon bottle of coca cola is finished.

I wonder if we'll see something like a hd7980 (a la hd4890) ... though, that was released to compete with the gtx285 and 275, which weren't late ... if kepler doesn't hit the stores soon, AMD might not feel they need to make something like that.

It's nice to finally see overclocking giving solid scaling on their cards. I am waiting for the MSI 7970 Lightning review :awe:

I'd really love to see what the 7950 brings to the table, but if it were available I'd probably buy the new 7970 right now to replace my 2 6870's. About the same performance in a single card, more memory, cooler, quieter, etc. The price seems high, but it's the latest and greatest, personally I wouldn't gamble on a price drop for many months as it will have no competition and the supply will be low.

I don't understand why some of you are so disappointed. It's not revolutionary on a 8800GTX level, but it's still a damn fine card and a big step in the right direction regarding GPGPU performance.
