Somewhere buried in one of AMD's conference calls, the question came up, I believe it was Dirk Meyer being asked if graphics IP was involved in the refreshed cross license agreement as part of the cash settlement. His simple answer was "yes". I don't recall the exact details, but I don't believe much granularity was given on that point, so we don't know to what end the IP is available to Intel.

I confirm this, its true, i heard that conference call and that statement made an impression.

Paper launch is paper launch. There is no no card this year. It worked out pretty great for me. So back to my previous comment, how is asking for someone to link their claims stink?

I said in July or so no cards would be out this year. Out generally means purchaseable by the public. Any other definition won't cut it.

How exactly am I making "stink" when I did what he asked me to do, I couldn't find what it was he cited, and asked him to show me? Silverforce has a long history of making claims he never backs up and all I asked him to do was show me where he saw that.

"We talked to NVIDIA today and they said they plan on releasing their next generation processor in the first half of 2012 and our sources off the record said it would be at the end of that time frame."

Our sources off the record. I don't know who or what that exactly is, but I'll take it with a grain of salt. I don't need to upgrade anyway, I just dislike people spouting fud as fact for the sake of trying to make something look bad.

Ditto

Nice O/C review.

Guru3D HD 7970 Overclocking guide

Pretty comprehensive for what's available with the stock card. No voltage tweaking and stock bios. Pretty impressive results. Good increase in performance, really nips at the heels of the dual GPU cards and pulls away from the other single GPU solutions. Can't wait to see this thing without PowerTune and some volts pumped into it.

The 7970 is almost as fast as a GTX 590 with the overclock. Once voltage control is accessed, or perhaps even without additional voltage and just more clockspeed headroom allowed, the card could match or mildly eclipse it.

That is pretty darn nice for a single GPU. :sneaky:

Looking forward to the factory OC ed cards from asus and msi, and anandtech doing reviews of kepler vs those. This card is just insane of it can beat or tie the 6990. AMD eid themselves a bad favor by not having factory OCed versions at launch.

That is impressive. Hopefully Nvidia can get some 28nm GPU's out soon to put some pricing pressure on the board.

realistically speaking based on what we know, dont expect kepler flags till late q2 2012 OR early q3. my betting is on the latter ESPECIALLY when you consider glofo and TSMC arent fabricating for nvidia anymore.

btw this is THE ionusx

The 7970 has only one flaw I can see....It's the MSRP

Would be funny if the MSRP suddenly changes at the last minute before availability. I could see this happening as the only thing people can really bitch about is the price point which seems to be reflected in all reviews and forums.

For what looks like AMD's 28nm pipecleaner I'm thinking GCN and 28nm are gonna be bringing some monster cards from the red team as the process matures along with the driver optimizantions and maybe a little tweak here and there.

Look at this guy!! Bringing out the Xmas special nerd porn, 4-way action.

CPU: Intel I7 3960K Retail OC 4.7 GHz MB: ASUS ROG Rampage Formula IV Cooler: Antec KUHLER H2O 920 DRAM: 8GB G. Skill DDR3 2400MHz (8-10-8-27) VGA: 4x HD7970s

Nice rig, needs real game benches though. 3DMark06 is very CPU limited though. Not sure why people still use that bench.

Something tells me 3960 @ 4.7ghz is bottlenecking those cards on 1 monitor.

That's not even showing the handful of benchmarks they ran where the 7970 is actually faster than the gtx590. All without voltage tweaking, only like 2C extra heat, and only about 250watts under load. They were bios limited to 1125mhz and it's pretty apparent that the card has more headroom left just going off the heat and power numbers they are showing.

These things with voltage tweaking will be insane, and will most likely have very little trouble blowing a gtx590 out of the water. That's a $750 GPU to all the people whining about the $550 price tag. I'm interested to see how nvidia's pricing structure is going to respond to this.

Reviewers should lend each other cards so we can get crossfire benches.

@1125 core the 7970 is rocking around 229watts of power use at peak:

from guru3d.

Man that is pretty neat.
I think once we start seeing voltage used overclocks, this card will be more impressive.

aaaanyways.... at 229watts (7970 OCed) its pretty close to the performance of the 590 thats around 340watts.

I'm holding off on buying a 6950 ($230 after rebate) until the 7000 series releases. I'd really like a 7950 but I'm not sure I can justify the $450 price tag.
