I played for about an hour last night. It feels exactly like I thought it would (western GTA), which is good. It hasn't hooked me yet. Hopefully that changes.

I like the shooting WAY better than GTA4.

Turning on the horses sucks ass, which I knew it would. No game has ever done horse riding right, and I had no beliefs this game would do it right either, so that isn't really a disappointment. Just an annoyance I will have to get over.

Oh, also--check it the package Rockstar sent over. Yes, I know this is showing off a bit but I've worked really hard on establishing a relationship with them damnit!

Both versions of Red Dead Redemption, dice bound in a leather, black Eradicator soap, a (really small) shirt, & dead mans hand cards.

My anticipation for this game reached nuclear levels. Here's proof: Yesterday morning I discovered a beefy packaged from Rockstar Games on my doorstep and I tore it open like it a 5year old on x-mas morning. Inside I found both copies of the game, gamblers dice bound in leather, black 'Eradicator' soap, deadmans playing cards and a super-short Red Dead Redemption shirt--I nearly fainted. Felt very fortunate.

So yes, clearly I was hyped for an experience of a life time. This excitement mostly stemmed from my love for the open-world genre, GTA4 as a whole and Rockstar's pedigree. Additionally I felt that we, as gamers, have had very little opportunity to experience a compelling western game and this was our most likely our best shot.
So there I was, the game had finished installing itself, I was sitting at the menu system and I was ready to see what Rockstar San Diego had spent so much time (4 years i beleive) working on. My initial impression after playing for about an hour? Frustration. It started with:

The Horse
I was pissed off and fairly disappointed with one of the most important mechanics in the game--the horse riding. It handled horribly. I tolerated it through the tutorial mission where you race against Bonnie (btw thanks for the paragraph of tutorial text while riding a speeding horse on a twisty road Rockstar--great idea!) through the ranch, but it lead to my horse squirreling out of control and me saying "WTF is going on here!" I failed the race 3 times because my damn horse was getting stuck on fences and trees. I kept pulling back on the left-stick to slow the horse down instead of hitting the RB, I mean what sense does that make? Additionally I hated the fact that you have to mash the A button to race forward because, now, my right thumb was too busy to let me look around with the right stick.

But I stayed with it and after a few hours I really started to become comfortable with it. I think this is partially my fault and partially Rockstars. For some reason I expected this horse to handle like Zeldas Epona or the horse in Assassin's Creed, and the fact that it didn’t really annoyed me. What took me a bit to realize is that Rockstar really wants to make a horse riding mechanic that is their own and isn’t like the cars in Vice City, but more like the cars in GTA4. This is to say the horses handled more realistically.

I'll not forget the moment I felt like I mastered horse riding controls. I was walking through Armadillo at night and some bandits came riding through town screaming, laughing, yelling as they fired off their 6-shooters into the night’s sky. It wasn’t until they passed me by that I saw an innocent woman screaming for help as she was violently dragged behind them. I quickly called for my horse (love this), jumped on her back, spun around and quickly rode after the scumbags to save her. The chase ended about a mile out of town as I took potshots at them. Suddenly I remembered the Dead Aim system and quickly initiated it! I ended up killing all 4 of the men, with head shots no less. When the effect wore off I watched in amusement as all 4 bandits fell off their horses flopping to the dusty ground. One actually still had a foot stuck in one of the horses’ stirrups and the startled horse dragged his body alongside as it took off. I Looked around at the bodies and felt like a total badass. It was just one of those moments where all the games systems came together beautifully.

So it was a payoff for sticking with the game but I don’t know how many other people are willing to go through the same initial feelings as I and press on.

Graphics
This game is gritty, dirty, raw and I like it. It can be a little bland to looking at first—especially if you're not seeing it at the right time of day--but there are such subtle details in the environment and animations that make this game really stand out. I do think that the frame rate can dip down too often (X360) at times--particularly during some cutscenes and horse riding events--but it’s not really enough to have a lasting negative effect.

The characters I've encountered so far are, of course considering Rockstars track record, filled to the brim with personality. No one does this stuff like Rockstar. There is always seriousness at the core of Rockstars narratives, but there is a certain levity that some outrageous and wacky characters bring and RDR is no excpetion. I know that these can feel a little long to some--perhaps because they just want to get to the action, and who can blame them--but I do feel like Rockstar is really good at getting to their point quickly without tediously long or overelaborate cutscenes.

Music
I love the music and soundtrack--it's perfect. It's dusty, it's spaghetti, it's got additude and its sets the mood.

Side Stuff & Notes
I love the side stuff. Poker is really fun, and a great way to make money. Five-finger filet is harder than I thought it would be, but man, Horse shoes it the most difficult (I haven’t won a single game hehe).

The treasure hunting is rad. I like that it forces clues on to you as you must explore and think about the whereabouts. Its not just an "X" marks the spot.

Last night I chased a Stallion around and when I finally gave up be stopped to eat...ON a train track. Out of curiosity I waited to see what would happen when a train approaches. Would the horse notice and run away? Would it end up a chunk mess? Well, lets just say that there was a LOT of blood involved.

So I think this game--with it's slow plot progression and awkward horse riding mechanic--is a bit of a slow burn, but it does appear that it's going to pay off. We'll see if this game has legs.

Woah, someone had the same impression of the race against Bonnie that I did! I was disappointed when I found out I already had 'horse relative' camera on, but tried again and on the fourth race I prevailed.

Heh, I got a code in the game case, and Amazon just sent me an email with another code for the golden guns. I guess one of them is going on Ebay.

haha, i was just coming to post the same thing.

They didn't send me a second but I was secretly hoping they would

Haha, I came to post the same thing as well. First thing that popped into my head was "Yessss..... another $40!"

As far as the game goes, the comparisons to GTA are going to be obvious. The controls are a little weird, especially selecting weapons. I don't like how the wheel is setup at all and it just doesn't feel right. Other than that, I didn't get a chance to play very much really.

I did manage to complete a bounty and I have to say it's pretty damn hard capturing the guy alive. I chased one guy literally for 30 minutes on horse only to be gunned down like 15 seconds later by some of his crew. I probably died 6 times trying to capture that guy.

I semi-enjoyed GTA4 and RDR feels the same. The clicker for me is that I think I like the wild west theme a lot more than modern day for this type of sandbox game.

Apologies to anyone that sent game invites for MP. Acquired a new ladyfriend and well... yeah. :awe:

Horse relative is default, it's camera relative that makes it way easier.

How do you capture someone alive?

I tried shooting them in the legs, and they went down to there knees. But when I ran up to them nothing happened. I tried pressing different buttons, but eventually started getting shot at, so I just wound up killing them.

I had the same experience. Apparently you need the lasso to capture bounties alive. I got it towards the end of my playing time last night but haven't tried to capture a bounty alive yet.

The way I did it was by lassoing them on horseback, then reel them in until you get the hogtie prompt. After that, you're given the option of putting them on the back of your horse and pray you aren't gunned down on your way back to town.

It's a cool game device but the controls make it a little weird to get it down without some trial and error. Seems like you have to be fairly close to get the lasso on the guy in front of you. The reward seems well worth it though since my last bounty reward was $240 for getting him in alive.

Ah ok. That makes sense. Didn't realize you needed the lasso. Need to work on some of my story missions then!

Then I was down by some water area and I heard shooting. I see some fat scraggly looking dude come running past, and turn around to see a guy with a badge chasing him. So I took out my rifle and shot the dude in the back, and got thanked by the law man.

Heh...I accidentally did the opposite. I was riding around saving people, and I see these guys chasing this guy on foot. So I ride over and the chasers started shooting at me, so I gunned them one of them down. Turned out they were the law! But they wouldnt stop shooting at me so I had to take them down. I'm not sure why they were shooting at me as I hadn't really done anything bad, but screw em!

So I'm riding into town and this guy is riding right at me shooting, so I popped him. hahaha...turns out he was trying to kill a wolf or coyote. I felt bad about that one.

Yes I frustratingly found this out as well. I went through two bounty missions before discovering that I needed a lasso. I still find it hard to beleive Rockstar didnt include a prompt saying "Want to capture these guys alive? finish up the tutoial stuff with Bonnie" or something to that effect.

Here's a quick question. I did the first mission for the Sheriff of Armadillo (the tavern thugs) and when I have only the gang leader left, I have no way of taking him alive. He nearly kills me while I try to melee him but then I am forced to put a breathing hole in his liver. After the mission concludes I get -100 to either fame or honor. I can't figure that out. Going to reload.

Shoot him in the leg - that's what I did.

Ahh, good call. I'll have to use dead eye also. One more thing, has anyone else but me been through that mission and had people on horseback gunfighting down the hill? Who are they? I wanted to find out before I went in and started popping heads, in case they're good guys.

Shoot him in the leg and lasso him. If you dont have the Lasso then you need to do more missions with Bonnie.

I played for a few hours last night, had tons of fun. Explored the northern part of the world, did quite a few quests and started in on the journal achievement things (sharpshooter, hunter, etc.). They are a pain in the ass to do, just finding the stuff.

Dude I was going to post the exact same 2 things. Everything I've done so far to get a bounty on my head was by accident. I also took out a guy on horseback because he was coming right for me.

And then a bad guy with two lawmen behind him was running for me, so I was aiming for him, but I think what happened is my crosshair grazed over the lawmen and they started shooting at me! So they all died. Plus a couple witnesses.

I think for the multiplayer to be any fun you need to be in a group of friends with a common goal. Otherwise, it's pretty random and lackluster.

Oh also: I stole a stagecoach by accident. I didn't realize "drive" means "steal" so I thought why not. Then the guy jumps off and runs away waving his arms and screaming and I'm thinking dude you can have it back.

I can't wait to get my copy. Apparently it was transferred from UPS to the USPS in Auburn, WA, yesterday, so hopefully I get it today. The only problem is I just started Alan Wake so it's going to be a struggle splitting time between both.

It is precisely because of things like this that Rockstar games crack me up. LMAO! :awe:
