Tried this with a friend last night and it was pretty fun, even though the controls still presented most of the challenge. I wonder if this game would be ridiculously easy if it had more modern controls (or if you could simply shoot while walking backwards)? The enemies are so slow and reticent to attack you.

In Public Assembly I found a scorpion submachine gun in a suitcase in the NE corner of the map with respect to the first shack you enter.

Haven't played any RE since Code Veronica... how am I going to like this?

I would be happy to just get 1,2,3 and Code Veronica rereleased for 360. I might have to go on eBay and get all those for DC and hook it up to the VGA input on the hdtv.

Where the hell is the key to the gate in shanty town?!?

After 10min the controls didn't bother me at all, and while the combat is clunky, it is smooth once you get in the groove. Particularly once you have the timing down for when they have taken enough damage to get in close to KTTFO.

The chainsaw guy has it, you've gotta kill him to get it.

Ya know R Nilla, your statement about how easy it could be with modern controls holds some clout. I decided to play it single player on the shanty town level again now that I'm more used to RE4 (even if it is with the remote). Being back in "the RE mentality" I pretty much breezed through it, I only got hit once the entire level (someone threw an axe at me whilst I was reloading), Sheva didn't get hit at all. The controls are still frusterating at times but like you mention, considering the AI it would probably make the game too easy otherwise (which is sort of a sad state to be in!).

I never got the prompt to hit X for the uppercut. The whole prompt thing seemed hokey to me.

Woah, hold everything! I'm watching the "OXM Resident Evil 5 report" or whatever on my Xbox and the developer says that you can use the "old style" controls OR you can use "Gears of War style" Action controls where you CAN MOVE while shooting! Don't really have any more info than that, but check it out on your Xbox, it was one of the things on my dashboard. Mayhaps this control scheme isn't available in the demo??

Never played this series before but love the genre. I played the demo for 20 min and here are my impressions:

1) Sidekick is hot
2) Can't move while aiming? TERRIBLE.
3) Viewpoint is horrible; it's neither first person nor third, so unlike a first person you cannot get a good vantage point and unlike, say, Grand Theft Auto, you don't know exactly when somebody is behind you, either until they are right there. It's just not right.
4) Aiming = terrible. Aiming = awful. Here's why: Even on the fastest targeting mode the guy turns SUPER FVCKING SLOWLY. Moreover, and the worst, there is no targetting reticle (that I found; I didn't look in depth in options, though)--just a silly laser sight. The result of this is that as you sweep the sight over an area, you don't really know how close you are to a creature's, say, head until you are literally on it. The fact that you are constantly viewing the laser line from the side (as this is a "side" third person view) means that it's exceedingly difficult to really tell what you're about to aim at until you are, if it changes distances (as a person would if you're sweeping an area and the target is much closer).

In the end, I found that fighting in that congested room near the beginning to be quite frustrating. I never felt totally in control of the guy. It felt like a bad dream you know the ones where you cannot fire a gun no matter how hard you pull the trigger or you're trying to run but cannot gain traction and it feels like running on ice or something.

I'd say that if they made the targeting movement MUCH quicker and gave a proper targeting reticle, plus probably made the view either first person or much longer distance third, it would be better.

EDIT: You know it's funny everybody has the same complaint. There is no way in hell that the testers didn't give the design team the same feedback while playing. I can only assume that one designer with trump power really has a hard-on for this poor gameplay style or that they want the game to fail. I certainl would not pay for it with its current control scheme.

Hate to do fanboi status (especially since I'm a 360 guy) but that has GOT to be a "M$ perk" of some sort, come on. The 360 demo is less than 500 megs!

Oh wait, do you mean the demo or the full game?

The view is pretty much identical to that of RE4 and it's one of the things that the game was praised for, the "more realistic and chlostrophobic perspective." Yeah, aiming is a lil' slow. I posted yesterday that in an OXM interview video that was on XBL yesterday one of the dev's said straight that there was a new control scheme that would allow moving while shooting, dunno if it's just not in the demo or what though, it might make life easier though as he compared it directly go Gears of War.

And yeah, I'd say that Sheva one of the most attractive array of pixels I've seen. She kinda sorta looks like a darker version of Kate Beckinsale...but maybe that's just me. But I don't really get jollies from virtual characters.

I think more impressive is the steroid riddled Chris Redfield who's biceps are barely contained by his shirt, despite his age (says something like 35 in the loading screen). I dunno, it's a tossup between the juiced Chris or the somehow highly trained 23 year old African agent...maybe they recruit when young in Africa.

The full game requires a 5GB install on the PS3.

I think the controls suck as well. And what sucks even more is all the idiots saying "Oh this must be your first RE game, you just don't get it". The controls don't make the game suspenseful for me, they make me want to throw my controller out the window.

God the controls are terrible. Ok dumb question but in the public protest level, what are you supposed to do? I just stand in that first room (after you jump down from the ledge) and keep fighting guys until I get killed by the axe guy. I don't know where to go. I just die in the room or outside in the "yard"

you just run around until help arrives. You have to basically run around and just survive. Once you leave the little house you start in, the big axe dude will knock down a fence which opens up a another huge area you can run around in.

You can kill the axe guy and it'll make your life easier. He's not too tough, the more annoying thing is steering clear of the never ending wave of normal bad guys, just survive for a few mins and you'll beat it.

I honestly found the same thing. I was fairly sure my first impressions were right but am glad to see that they were and others found the experience equally as appalling.

D/L'd RE5 from PSN today. Don't have time to play, maybe on the weekend. I hope it looks just as good as the demo videos.

It looks great! The control scheme isn't worth a damn. Why couldn't they have put an auto-target in the game?
