A bunch of us ordered the Zaurus from the hsn deal here.

Well, this is a thread for us Zaurus owners to post and share our ideas, softwares, experiences!

Go Zaurus!

**04/01/03**
Consolidated Links into the top thread. Many thanks to nacs, figgypower, creegah for posting these awesome links!

Myzaurus.com is the official user site. It has a couple tips and tricks, downloads and such.

Zaurus dev forum is a more developer oriented forum (but non-developers seem to hang around and get support there too.

And of course there's Openzaurus, the opensource replacement ROM for the Zaurus. Most people seem to say it's better and I plan to do this as soon as I get a CF card (you need one to flash the ROM). Edit: I got a CF card and flashed and am now using OZ instead of the Sharp ROM as it's a lot better IMO.

For software, Zaurus Software Index seems to be the biggest and best best source of (mostly free) software.

Now for a few helpful stuff for newbies, like myself:
*A command list of all the stuff you can use at the console
*A terminal which lets you use the console instead of shutting down. There is another alternative; this is the official from Qtopia, I believe. Nacs mentioned one in the earlier thread.
*A file manager - I know there are alternatives, and they're better. However, this is nice for beginners.
*A USB cable that hooks up directly to the Zaurus, but it's quite expensive.

There's a rotation application, but I can't get it to work. You can check it out by following the links here. Look at the 3rd question. You actually need to download three apps: QPE-Rotation, QPE-Settings, and Qt-Embedded-Rotation. Of course, YMMV, because I don't know if it works or not

Just a note: the terminal program and filemanager are actually on the installation CD that comes with the Zaurus itself. Look under the "Applications" directory in the CDROM to find the ipks, install instructions and a PDF file on how to use them.

Rufio--there is also Zynergy which is basically the Sharp ROM with some bulk removed and some applications replaced. I ended up going back to openzaurus though.

Also, there is a nice unofficial FAQ.

For ebook/document lovers, Memoware is great

I found a utility called DocReader (do a search in Google) which "translates" most of the ebook formats into txt files which can be read by the Zaurus. Just Reader is a good ebook reader. The only format I have not been able to convert are pdf files.

The Gutenbrowser ipk is excellent and you can download a ton of ebooks using it AND read them within the Gutenbrowser. There are different versions of Gutenbrowser for various OS's

Well let me start off by posting some links I posted earlier then:

If anyone else knows any other good sites, feel free to post them here.

is OPENZAURUS the only ROM for the device? Are there any other ROM's out there?

Also, why do u like OZ better? I'm just curious.

I just want to say that this thing has the most user friendly version of Linux I've ever seen. Everything works and I haven't been frustrated..... yet.

Anyone notice how much better the browser would be if they rotated it 90 degrees?

Yeah! Good job Rufio! I need a few questions answered since I'm somewhat of a Linux newbie. What exactly is Qtopia? Is it a shell app running on top of the OS (Linux, in this case) - much like the ancient days of Windows? Or Qtopia a part of the OS? I realize this may be an incredibly dumb question, but I'm just curious. Now, about the media player - why is my video so jerky? Last question: which is better for syncing - Intellisync or Qtopia Desktop?

Now for a few helpful stuff for newbies, like myself:
*A command list of all the stuff you can use at the console
*A terminal which lets you use the console instead of shutting down. There is another alternative; this is the official from Qtopia, I believe. Nacs mentioned one in the earlier thread.

Rufio, there is apparently another ROM called Crow. Also, for aynone that's curious: I've finally found some stuff saying the Sprint PCS CF connection card works with the Zaurus (I might take the plunge soon myself), Doom runs great, Quake runs slow as molasses. I've found that I have the freedom to stick in my SD card whenever I want; the manual says only after boot, but I've found it not to be true.

Ok, sorry, but I've got more questions. How do I stop that annoying "Unsafe Removal of Device" message that comes up everytime the Zaurus goes into standby mode on the docking cradle or I remove it from the docking cradle? I know it's not unsafe at all - I just want to get rid of it... It's W2K. Thanks in advance.

Opie reader and qpdf are both good document viewers (both available in the software library I linked above).

Can the Opie Reader be used with Qtopia or would I have to go to OpenZaurus to use it ?

Okay, I'd loaded it and now for the stoopid question of the day. What format is it looking for and where can I find ebooks compatable with it ? I Dl'd some from memoware but apparently it's not the right format. Please pardon my ignorance. This is all new to me.

According to it's site: The formats which it does understand are:

* "Doc" format - also known as the original Aportis or AportisDoc format.
* Weasel or ztxt format.
* Plucker format.
* gzipped text.
* ppms text.
* Plain text with special handling of PML or HTML marked-up text.

It does not support:

* iSilo
* TealDoc (afaik)
* PalmReader/Peanut - although the early versions of these files were based on "Doc" format and Opie-Reader can manage some of the free files.
* EZReader.
* Many others.

Bump; anyone want to help with me my questions? By the way, I thought OZ could also use OPIE instead of Qtopia, and by default OZ uses OPIE...

Opie is a forked version of the Qtopia code and it's made to be fully compatible with Qtopia. The reason why Opie exists is pretty much because Qtopia isn't GPL licensed (it's under the QT license or something which isn't always 100% free).

I don't use W2k so I can't help you there figgypower. XP doesn't prompt me when I remove it from the cradle.

I'm running it right now and it's by far the best release. I had been using 3.0 till this came out. It looks a lot better, is more stable and looks much more 'polished'.

And the package feed is even better than ever too. I'd definitely recommend that everyone try this.

Hi Figgypower,

Sorry, my last post came out blank because I treied to login and post on the same page!! Apparently that's a no no.

The Myzaurus.com web site talks about your problem with removing the Zaurus from the cradle and says:

"Why do I receive an "Unsafe Removal of Device" message when I remove the Zaurus from the docking station or turn it off?
This message only occurs with Windows® 2000 Professional and will not damage your PC or the connection to the docking station. Clicking on the OK button will not result in loss of data on the Zaurus or on the PC. To avoid this message, click on the "Unplug or Eject Hardware" icon on the task bar to stop the SL Series (NDIS 5) prior to removal from the docking station."
