Well, creegah I never installed the demo since I had legal, purchased copies of the entire Doom series. So I busted out those ancient copies and installed them on my PC. I ended up using the Doom 2 IWad (the "main" wad) file, because Doom 1 has some funky problems with PRBoom and the 2nd level. I also have file manager installed. Now, I copied my IWad files to the Zaurus which promptly sent it to the "Documents" folder. Using the file manager I found the IWad file and use the "cut" command. I then headed over to: "/opt/Qtopia/shared/games/doom/" and pasted it there. You can copy your IWad and add on wad files in here, or provide a link from your SD/CF card to here. Now, I never had the demo installed, so I never got a pretty little icon. I went to the "terminal" program and typed in "doom" and there you go. I can't remember specifically where, but add-on wad files can be added through PRBoom's option/configuration menu. You can do it through the console, too - I just can't remember the specific commands.

As for a space in the handwriting recognition, try this - on either the capital letters, lowercase, or the numbers (pick one part): hold a the pen down at a point and then slide it to towards the right. You basically slide the stylus horizontally, and that should create a space.

Also, I have two questions for you - can you give me some step-by-step info on the rotation? I couldn't get it to work. And does anyone know how to create an icon for doom if you never installed the demo? It'd just be convenient.

Edit (4/02/03):
Grammar.

Hey olouie,

You can find the stuff here. It's an unofficial FAQ that has the links to the place where you can download the rotation programs. There's also an earlier post I made about this, so check there, too. However, I couldn't get it to work - so you might want to wait for creegah to answer that.

figgypower--The website idea sounds good. I actually considered making one also but then ran into time constraints. I'd still love to help out though from time to time.

About the rotation thing: OZ 3.2 has it built in (Hit the "Start"/"Opie key" in the bottom left and hit rotate) and it works flawlessly for me.

olouie--Yeah I was in the same boat. I felt too lazy to reflash to the Sharp just to grab the opera ipks so I just installed Konqueror and use that instead.

Thanks, Figgypower, for the Doom tips...I also have legal copies of Doom and Doom II from the old days so will try out your suggestions later because I love that game....use to take wads on vacation with me and play them on a notebook.

And thanks for telling me about the space in handwriting! I never would have thought of that...I've never had a PDA before.

As to the rotation, all I can say is it took me a while to get it to work. Those last 2 files I mentioned were the ones I used that worked for me (qpe-rotation_1.4.0-1_arm.ipk qt-embedded-rotation_2.3.4-4_arm.ipk), but I have seen people post in other forums that other combinations worked for them. Maybe I installed the embedded fonts file BEFORE the other file and that's why it worked, don't know. I have ROM version 2.38 and Qtopia version 1.5.0 if that makes any difference. I think I did a search in Google to find those files...don't remember....next time I will pay attention to where I get these things.

I DO agree that this PDA is complicated...probably because I am trying to stick to totally free programs which are written by ordinary blokes and so are kinda difficult to install.

creegah--Qtopia desktop 1.6 is available as a free download from trolltech (link posted somewhere above). I find it to be much better than 1.5.

Help!! I am a newbie and just flashed my Zaurus to OZ. Worked great and I like the layout. BUT I have no web browser and no email client. Anyone know where I can get one and how to install. I wish they made a Zaurus for Dummies book. I would pay anything for one.

That question has been asked and answered already in this thread. Basically, you can rip opera from the Sharp ROM and install it into OZ or you can install Konqueror from the OZ software feed.

Thanks you made it very clear. Could you explain what install from the OZ software feed means? Is there any step by step instructions for people that are totally new to this.

Not to be rude but what is scary is that you are one of the ones to help out on that new Zaurus site they are creating to help people like me out. And that is the way you answer my question. Thanks alot.

If you get that site up and running and it helps out us newbies on understanding the basics of of configuring the Zaurus to our needs I would be more than happy to donate some cash to your site.

vette98--Sorry but on the very first page of this thread, I wrote a detailed description (step by step) of how to use software feeds. That first page also has my explanation of how to rip the Opera and Hancom office programs. You don't expect me to retype it all on every page do you?

This is what I have found that you wrote

"I had just wrote the post for creegah and hit post when I saw your new post pop up robisc. Some fast posters here.

You can install software from "feeds" in two ways. You can either install it directly from your Z by adding the feed to the package manager (but you have to make sure it has internet access of course) or you can install it through the Qtopia Desktop program. To add a feed, goto File>Settings>Software Packages>New. Then add the feed info--in the case of the docs.zaurus.com feed, you would type in any name you want (like docs.zaurus) then in the URL feed, enter http://docs.zaurus.com/feed

Hit OK to save and then goto the "Software Packages" tab in the main Qtopia desktop program to see the list of packages available from docs.zaurus.com. You can then install from there directly on to the Zaurus.

The question I was asking was where can I get the web browser and email client. I can't seem to find the install file for Konqueror. I am not sure if I am looking for one file or multiple files. Also I do not know what "feeds" are. Are they install files or what? Believe me I have ben searching for the last hour trying to get a basic install document that explains what "feeds" are and other basics on installing apps. I have never used Linux till now and am in the dark on this stuff. I come from a Windows world. And I have read through this thread front to back and back to front try to decipher everything out.

Hey sorry to bother you.

The question I was asking was where can I get the web browser and email client. I can't seem to find the install file for Konqueror.

After you add the docs.zaurus.com feed as I mentioned above and the OpenZaurus feed (instructions for that are on the Openzaurus website, you'll see a package called "konqueror-snapshot" or "konqueror-snapshot-full" show up in the list of packages. You can right click and select install to install it.

Also I do not know what "feeds" are. Are they install files or what?

Feeds are basically just a collection of programs made for the Zaurus or Opie/Qt (what the Zaurus uses). They contain a list of programs that you can install in a way that the Zaurus or the Qtopia desktop program that comes with the Zaurus can understand. Basically, you give the Qtopia desktop the address of the 'feed' and it will analyze it and present it in a nice way so you can install programs directly onto your Zaurus (without having to download ipks, moving them to the Zaurus ram then manually installing them).

The question I was asking was where can I get the web browser and email client.

Quoted from the first page: "As figgypower said, you have to rip Opera and Hancom office from the Sharp ROM to get them. It basically involves downloading "Opera Creator" and "Hancom creator" from the Zaurus Software index I linked above then executing the program from the Sharp ROM. The creator programs will make a installation program that you can then use to install on OZ." If you need further help with installing Opera, then post here and I'll try to make it clearer. You can find an email program on the Openzaurus feed.

I have never used Linux till now

Welcome to the club.

Thank You very very much. I understand a little better now. I have gotten as far as having all the packages show up in the Qtopia desktop but when I right click Konqueror Install is greyed out. I can only download it to my pc. Is it because Qtopia is not communicating with my PDA. After flashing it I can no longer FTP nor ping the cradle address of 192.168.129.201.

To check if Qtopia desktop can communicate with the Zaurus, check the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen). If you see a green arrow, then Qtopia will be able to access the Zaurus. If you see a red, broken-pipe, then there are problems that need to be sorted out. If you're having sync problems, make sure that the network is running on the zaurus. If you don't think the network is up, goto the Settings tab on the Z, select Network, select the usbd0 line, hit configure and fill in the appropriate settings. And make sure you check the "Automatically start on boot" setting. Then reboot.

One question under Network Connections, Local Area Connection 2 on your PC, do you have a static ip address or DHCP. Mine defaulted to dhcp but I changed it to match the settings on the Zaurus of 192.168.129.201 for IP and 192.168.129.200 for gateway and 255.255.255.255.0 for mask. I can now ping that address but I am still disconnected in Qtopia. I cannot ping the gateway.

Thanks

Nacs,

I went to this web site: ftp://ftp.trolltech.com/qtopia/snapshots/ and it just looks far too complicated to deal with what with tar.gz files and such. What do you do, download every one of those files and unzip and then what??

Boy, Linux people are used to some pain and trouble, aren't they? I'm used to one simple file that unzips and then you double-click on "setup" and you're done.

Is this new 1.6 really worth all that trouble? What are the new features that I just cannot live without?
