Nacs,

That's a relief that it can be found in a single Windows type file, but that link you listed doesn't work!

Oops. Fixed now.

Edit: OK nevermind. I'd thought it was my fault but this forum software is too retarded and adds a http:// before the ftp url. I've now made it a non clickable url to get around this bug.

Nacs,

Nevermind, I found it by backtracking on that FTP server and am downloading it now.

Ok I still cannot sync with my Zaurus after almost 2 hours. Can anyone tell me their network configuration on their Z and under the SL series connection on their pc. I need to know if the IP addresses should be the same or different. Also what are you using for a gateway address on both. Looks like I will be going back to the Sharp Rom so that I can surf the internet. Actually I am ready to throw this thing out the window and go buy a PDA that runs Windows CE.

Hey vette98, don't despair. It's true, it does require some work to get this thing up and running, and I think LOTS of screenshots and detailed explainations should help out plenty of people. I plan to start work this weekend. I'm having to return my Zaurus because of defects with the LCD screen; the HSN network said I should get my replacement by the 6th. Thus, I can't tinker with OZ. Now, I installed Intellisync SL to synchronize with my PC over Qtopia Desktop; no reason, just decided. Now, you can't have both Qtopia Desktop and Intellisync installed at the same time. You can go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Software; over there you'll get the option to remove Qtopia Desktop if you wish. Then you can insert the Zaurus CD and an automatic screen should pop-up to lead you through the installation of Intellisync. If you need more detailed help with that post back here.

Now, like I said I myself don't have any experience with Open Zaurus, but it should be pretty similar. Turn on your Zaurus and head to settings, it's a wrench looking icon on the top right, and now look for "Network and Sync". Click into it, and now you should have three tabs: Current, Services, and Sync. Click into the Sync tab. Under the USB IP Address make sure it's 192.168.129.201 and is the same for the serial IP Address. Then choose apply. Now head to your Windows desktop, along with Intellisync installed, right click the Intellisync icon and choose "Communication Options" make sure USB is selected and make sure it had PDA IP address as 192.168.129.201, or the same as previously mentioned. Right click the Intellisync icon one more time and choose "Synchronization Options"; that should give you several options to have different programs synchronize with the Zaurus.

To synchronize, right-click the Intellisync icon once more and choose synchronize. If you did a default, or the regular, installation of Intellisync you should have a "Intellisync Accessfolder" on the desktop. Copy whatever files you want on the Zaurus to this special folder on the desktop. Then right-click the Intellisync icon and choose "File Transfer" - you can now copy files to the Zaurus. If you need more help, just post back - or PM me. I hope my post wasn't condescending. Also, read through some of the links provided on the very first post by Rufio. They might be somewhat helpful; if you need explaination for them then just ask. Best of luck and if you need more help, I'll be gald to help. Look forward towards my site and give me all the suggestions you can think of!

Edit (4/03/03):
Once you've got it all set, I can assure you, that it'll be a good tool. Yes, a tool.

Thanks for the Pep talk. I just decided to put it aside and try again this weekend. It worked perfect up until I flashed it with OZ. From there everything went downhill including my sanity. I have tried everything. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Qtopia 1.6 and previous versions. I also installed Intellisync. What kills me is instead of going forward I am going backwards. At first my computer seen it fine and I could even ping it but would not sync. Now my computer only sees it as an unknown device and forget about pinging it. I have even reflashed twice while pulling out my hair. Finally I broke out my laptop and installed the software fine but still could not sync up. Thats when I said F**K it. 6 hours is enough for one day. What kills me is that I cannot even go back to Sharp's Rom because I cannot get the rom pack on the compact flash card. I need to go out and buy a compactflash reader so that I can completely start over. I will also be rebuilding my computer this weekend too. I will give it another try. But I do have to say before the OZ flash this device was the balls. Especially surfing in the bathroom. HAHA

I would highly recommend against flashing straight to OZ, because that requires getting used to the Zaurus at first. Of course, if you're an experienced PDA user I guess go for it; I'm not, and I'm a Linux newbie. Until I get used to the standard OS first, I'm not gonna jump to OZ. I do realize that OZ is probably superior in many respects, so once I'm comfortable (I'd say a month for myself) I plan on jumping to OZ and OPIE. I don't like the Qtopia interface too much, and I hear OPIE is "prettier". Pretty is good.

vette98, what you may want to do is just uninstall everything and pretend you're starting from scratch. This may mean a painful hard reset of the Zaurus. I'd wait to hear from nacs if this is even safe to do, as you flashed to OZ. I'd uninstall everything and try running RegClean or something similar to clean up my registry on the Windows PC. Empty the recycle bin and restart the PC. Then go ahead and pretend it's all new and use Intellisync. Your first, last resort should be HSN.com - they have great customer service. Your last, last resort should be Sharp themselves, as I hear they're pretty good with their 1yr warranties.

Syncing the Zaurus is quite the pain... You really have to make sure it's seated in the docking cradle real well. My Handspring Visor effortlessly slid in. Occassionally Intellisync will still whine, and I just shut the program down and restart it. For some reason the connection between the Zaurus and the PC goes "dead". That's the best I can describe it. I hear OZ is supposed to be better at this, too. However, like I said - wait on that changing OS deal.

About my LCD screen, there's one live pixel (not sure if that's the right term...) and one dead pixel. Yeah, they're not too bad at all, but I'm very picky. Anyway, I called HSN.com up and they mailed a postage paid mailer to ship them back the item and they're shipping me a brand new replacement. In the meanwhile, I can use it all I want - but I'm sure they won't accept it broken; I just said the LCD screen was defective. Their customer service tends to be a little scripted, but the wait times are small and the policies are great. I end up paying nothing for my replacement and I suffer little downtime with the PDA.

Edit (04/04/03):
I want to add that this thing can be really powerful, but only once you've got it set and running. I've heard of some amazing stuff being done with the Zaurus that I know the PPC and the Palms can't do. Unfortunately, there's that initial setup. Also, I'm searching for a web host right now, I should be up and running sometime this weekend - but it'll be very small to begin with.

OZ is definitely prettier/more customizable. But yes, using the Sharp ROM to get a feel of how the system works is definitely recommended, especially if you don't have a Linux background. Personally, I found OZ to be a better version of the Sharp ROM in every way except for maybe the sync (I had to do a tiny bit of config to get it to sync while the Sharp ROM on the other hand was pretty much plug and play).

And yes, the flashing process does involve a hard reset (two actually--once when you install and one after) but I store most docs/files on my memory cards so this is really painless. And I've flashed back and forth from the Sharp ROM to Zynergy ROM to OZ 3.0 to OZ 3.1 release candidate to OZ 3.2 with no ill effects. I'm now sticking with OZ 3.2 though.

Also, I hear that Sharp will soon release the Zaurus 5600's ROM for the 5500! For free. And very soon (they're in the 'final testing' phase right now). The 5600 ROM contains a number of bug fixes, improvements (like in sync support), more driver support, Opera 6 (5500 comes with 5.0) and more. So that should bring added value to the 5500.

And with figgypower's site going up, the Zaurus experience should only get better from here.

The fact that it runs Linux helps also. I get a warm feeling knowing that Uncle Bill didn't make a dime off of this purchase.

Definitely. Also there's the fact that running Linux is just way more 1337 than running M$.

I've got zraydoom. Is there another that will allow me to run the original wad? That would be cool.

Thanks

I don't know if you guys found any good screen protectors yet, but I bought iConcepts from Amazon and they were terrible. Anyway, I found another set of screen protectors here. I found him through eBay when I was searching for different screen protectors. I emailed him a few questons and he offered right off the bat to send me a sample, which I thought was pretty good business practice. Anyway, it came today and is so much better than the iConcepts one. His prices are very reasonable, 15 protectors costing $10 and shipping being a flat $2.

This seems like the only decent solution out there unless I'm overlooking the obvious. There is no way I'm not using a screen protector after I saw how easily my Clie scratched...

I need to copy a file from my SD memory card to my Compactflash card. I have tried the built-in File Manager in OZ but there is no option to copy. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Well to move it I know you can just hold-click the document name in the document tab and select the new location.

To copy though, I guess you'd either have to: Upload the file again through Qtopia desktop. Or the 'expert' way to do this would be to fire up the Konsole program and type cp /mnt/card/location/of/file/to/copy.txt /mnt/cf/location/to/copy/to/.

When trying to install Konqueror it says "The packages you want to install have prerequisites. These packages are notavailable: Qt-embedded 2.3.2, libcrypto0.9.6, libssl 0.9.6"
I have tried many times but it will not install. I tried to find these other packages but I cannot find them. Any help anyone?

I'm pretty sure this is the actual file you're looking for. Try this first and see if it works. Use the instructions in the following paragraph if this doesn't work. I recommend this.

However, it does sound like Qt-embedded 2.3.2 is an old version of the Qtopia embedded environment, and you can get it here. TrollTech provides a page describing that download. You can find out more about the newer version at this page. Also, here is a mirror to the same files. You'll find the newer versions at the web page if you scroll down.

As for libcrypto, well I've got a few places you can try and download that from (just pick one):
First
Second
Third
Fourth

Now for libssl, I've also got a few places to try and download (just pick one):
First
Second - Seems like a slightly newer version
Third

I think that libcrypto and libssl have newer version, but I'm not sure if Konqueror will work with them or not. If you want to be safe, I'd just go with the version provided. The Qt-embedded, I did provide links to newer version, but again I'm not sure if that's the safest route. I think, to just get things to work, I'd install what's recommended. Maybe nacs can chime in.

Edit (04/06/03):
For some reason I hit "Reply to message" before I was done... On an off-topic note, I've secure a domain name and I'm waiting for a web host. I've picked DatHorn as the web host, as I'm hearing a lot of good things and no negative things about it here and at WHT. Unfortunately, the owner accepts only the number of customers he can support rather then oversell, which is great - but I can't get an account, yet. I might try things temporarily, and I think I'd like PMs of people willing to volunteer help. First I'll flesh out the basic details then get right on it! Then, when I get the chance move it immediately to DatHorn.

Thanks for the help but when I try to install libcrypto it wants a file called libc6 2.2.4-4 even tho I have the version 2.2.4-9 installed. The other files installed fine. I think I will go back to the Sharp Rom till someone has some definite set instructions on how to install Konqueror. Boy do I miss windows. Whats funny to is when I try to install Konqueror it still says it needs libssl even tho that is installed too.

I'm not quite sure why you're having so many problems. For me, installing Konqueror involved starting Qtopia desktop, right clicking konqueror-snapshot-full from the "Software" tab then hitting install. It downloaded and installed and I was set to go. This was under OZ 3.2 by the way.

I'm kind of puzzled, like nacs, as to what all the difficulties are from. If you could provide some more details, maybe we can help. For example, trying to tell us, as much as memory will help, how you installed OZ and whatever else in a step-by-step or semi-step-by-step instructions. I plan on hammering out the OZ 3.2 and Konqueror details with the help of nacs, creegah, and whoever else would be willing to help. Yes, I would suggest you return to the Sharp ROM, if possible. OZ 3.2 is definitely better, but until you really get the hang of the Sharp ROM, I'd discourage the jump. I'd say play with it and try to use it as an actual tool. Then once you're comfortable with it - jump to OZ 3.2 I would give it a month, at least - that's what I'm giving myself. I'm hoping evntually that, with a site geared towards newbies, it won't be necessary and jumping to OZ 3.2 + OPIE + (whatever) should be easy as pie.

To tell you the truth I am not sure why I am having all theses problems myself. First I flash the Zaurus with OZ 3.2 using the 40-24 kernel. That works fine with no problems. Then I install qtopia 1.6 from the url metioned earlier in the thread. I go into Packages and put in the feed " http://docs.zaurus.com/feed" which I think has been down the last couple of days. But I downloaded Konqueror the other day to my computer and it shows up in the list. From what I can remember (I am in work now.) it says embedded 5.1. I right click and hit install and that is when I get the messages I need prerequisites. Maybe I am using an older or corrupted Konqueror. I have searched many times for another version but I cannot even find the one I downloaded the other day. I go here
Konqueror but I still cannot find the file for Konqueror. I would think I am looking for a file that ends in .IPK . Is there a direct link to the file for Knoqueror someone might have. Also is there another email program I can downlaod and use or do I have to rip the one from the Sharp rom. I thought there might be a better one than that.

Thanks for the patience and help. One thing, I am learning alot from all these problems.
