It plays almost exactly like the old one. There are a lot more characters and a lot more items. I'm pretty sure all of the old cast is in Brawl because I just got Marth and Ness. I really don't like using the wii remote but maybe that's just me. My thumb is already thobbing pretty badly right now.

What's the fastest way to unlock all the characters?

I picked it up early this morning. I think it feels in between the first two games. Its not nearly as twitchy as Melee, which is a very good thing. Overall, yeah the characters are familiar, aside from a couple of small changes (Mario's down A move is now what used to be down B and down B is some stupid water canon thing). Zelda feels more powerful. I noticed they made Fox's blaster have limited distance on the shot (I have a friend or two that will really like that).

I haven't played it with anyone else yet, but we should have fun since they allow you to play a ton of stuff with at least two players. I did play a couple of matches against the computer though, and it seems like it should be fun.

I'm not crazy about any of the new stages I've played yet. Most are ok. I'll see how it goes when we play multiplayer, but I haven't found one yet that I think we'll play a lot. Melee had 3 or four that we'd play quite a bit, and a few others that were pretty good too. I really liked almost all of the stages in the original game. I don't like the new Metroid stages (they have the lava one which we've never liked all that much, and then the other one feels bland and uninteresting). Also, whats with the stupid voice stuff they put in a couple of the Metroid music?

Anyone know if you unlock anything more on the level builder? As it is out of the box, its really bland and not very good. I suppose its better than nothing, and its a start, but I can't imagine that we'll use it much if you can't unlock new things to put in it. Just saw that there are three unlockable sets.

Picked it up and played a few rounds, feels a lot different than Melee. It's going to be like the transition from SSB64 to SSBM, will take me a while to get used to the new mechanics.

Tried to access online play but think I received a timeout error. Nintendo's servers are probably getting slammed.

Yeah, I think it is noticeably different, and in a good way. Characters seem more balanced. Ike seems to be perhaps a bit more powerful than even Roy, but he's also slower, enough to counter it (I had a couple of friends that they only way they could compete in Melee is by being Roy or Marth, since they were quick but incredibly powerful). Half of my deaths in Melee came from suicides since the control was so twitchy (and the characters seemed to fall much faster than the original as well). My one friend is gonna love Metaknight, I tried him out a bit and he is probably my favorite new character. I don't like that Bowser still sucks, and so does King Dedede. I don't see any reason to use either of them as they aren't any more powerful than other characters, but they're also slow and just don't have any really competitive abilities (maybe they're harder to KO?).

I really like how they changed Special Melee, now you can apply the various things instead of being stuck with one type. We typically play either 2.0 damage chaotic stock matches, or else slow paced stamina (Fox's gun in Melee was really cheap on stamina matches). I love that they brought the bumper back (it was probably my favorite item from the first game), and also added the spring board which sometimes works like a bumper.

Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I'm sure all the changes are for the better. I didn't like Melee at first mainly because it was so different to play from SSB64. I'm sure it will be the same with Brawl until I get used to the mechanics. It definitely seems slower, and Fox was heavy as a rock in Melee and now he's like a feather. It's just different, but not necessarily bad.

My really short opinion - OK game, but still not for me. The backgrounds are pretty cool, though.

It is definitely not a "9.5" game, but if you're a Smash Bros. fan, you will love this, as it's basically the exact same game as it has ever been. My friend dominated on the N64 version, as I mentioned above, and he never played the Gamecube one. He jumped into this one, and the controls and everything were exactly the same for the same characters, so he was just as good as he ever was.

We tried using the remote + nunchuk combo first - don't bother. We then moved to the classic controller, which was OK. I prefer the Gamecube controller the best. You can set every button to any command you want, though, so that is very nice. We also tried multiplayer, but couldn't get a game started.

I will probably never play this game again.

I'll start off that I was never an avid fan, nor an avid player. I've watched, and maybe played a total of 3 times. But I always liked the idea.

Given that, I found the wii remote+nunchuck to be quite comfortable to use. I picked up a wavebird again (should never have sold the one i had...) and did not like the idea of one controller again. It just feels better to sit and have my hands disconnected for some reason.

Given that, I would say it is short one button on the wii remote, in terms of placement. I'm still trying to figure out what I like best. The classic controller is alright, but doesn't hold naturally.

Super Smash Brothers Brawl is AMAZING!

It's games like this that makes me feel like a little kid again.

The online random matches is shot to hell (probably due to server overloads), so add me as a friend and lets battle!

Picked this up today having never played any of the other SSB games and I am kind of left wondering what the big deal is. I haven't played any multiplayer yet but the single player games are boring. I really don't like that jump is both analog up and assigned to a button. I am going to give MP a try but I know I am going to get worked over hard.

The analog up and assigned button for jump thing has been there for the previous two SSB games as well-- however, I think I remember seeing an option in Brawl where you can disable the analog stick for jumping

I never expected the single player (and co-op!) experience to be so good. I'd heard of Subspace Emissary, but I guess after the last two games I was used to not caring about the single player experience. Subspace is surprisingly long and enjoyable.

You are correct, I modified my controls to disable the jump by flicking the analog stick up.

This game is pretty fun. The jumping feels a lot slower than melee. It almost seems air attacks are nerfed since they took out l-canceling. There's no more wavedashing. No directional air dodge. Wario is pretty bad ass. He's a lot faster then I thought he was going to be.

Heh... I played Melee for about a half hour and thought the same thing, ended up giving it away. I think I was one of the few Wii owners who wasn't looking forward to this game at all. Looking forward to Mario Kart Wii though.

I have to say, I kind of share the same feelings. I've not played any of the SSB games either, and I picked this up on Sunday and am now kind of scratching my head.

When I first started playing the game, it was like A.D.D. hell--I had a hard time telling what was going on. There was stuff flying everywhere and all over the place. I kind of forced myself into playing it (I really wanted to get back to Army of Two) and played through to the first boss with (of course) Samus and it was enjoyable.

I really think this game shines in MP--it must. So, kinda looking forward to checking that out. Now for that ridiculous friend code.

The gist of it is that on it's surface the game is absurdly simple. You have to really dig deep/read shit online to learn about moves, timing, etc, and then it becomes ridiculously complex. Easy to learn ridiculous to master kind of games.

Dunno about SSBB, but for SSBM, you started off with just smashes and button mashing, but then you dig deeper into tech rolls, wavedashing, shffl's, etc, etc. Really ridiculous. Check out video's in youtube. IMHO it's as complex as any fighting game out there.

Ok after playing MP for a few hours last night I think the game is ok... Not great... I won about 50% of my matches and have all of the moves down but it is really annoying when as warcrow said there are a bunch of things flying around the screen and it is zoomed back a bunch. I would often lose my character in the mess and don't even realize I am still fighting. All this on a 50" plasma. Are there tricks to keeping an eye on your character when things are zoomed out so far?

I want to know what people who owned the n64 version think of the brawl. I loved the n64 version and still play it on my 64 on occasion, but I hated
Melee when I played it with friends (kept me from buying a gamecube)

I feel all three games are completely different. I've only given brawl a 5 hour solo test drive last night so I can't make a final opinion yet, but so far melee looks to be the more competitive game

I played every game to death and just now got my first bit of sleep from the weekend of brawl. In my opinion, Melee > Smash 64, and it is too early to tell if Brawl as a pure fighting game is better than Melee or not. But I do believe it is possible

damnit make your decision already!!!

I play SSBM (still) to death and brawl is killing me. Knowing that melee is a better competitive game would lessen the burden.
