What a crappy episode. All the built-up tension, all the drama about Tony telling Johnny Sacks to piss off, all the pending violence and it all just fizzled. Christ, is David Chase afraid of things getting messy? Carmine vs Johnny, Carmine runs away just as things are about to explode. Johnny vs Tony, Tony caves just as things were about to get good. Now Johnny is in trouble with the FBI, so rather than fighting Tony he'll just be protecting himself next season.

The Sopranos copped out, it was a bunch of empty hype and hot air leading to simple solutions. Thank God there's still The Shield to watch.

I don't think Chase is afraid of things getting messy at all, rather, he continued with the strategy that has made the series so successful - the believability of it. Of course it could have turned into an all out war with 10 murders in the episode, but that would turn the show into the typical mob drama that lacks true drama. Tony "caves" because he realized how selfish he had been (apparantly Syl's little talk did some good!) in defending his ego rather than listening to his soldiers- making an incredibly hard decision that was far more meaningful than just ordering hits on the guys in Brooklyn...

Right, right, the believability of it. Sure, I believe Tony, while wearing slick-soled loafers, outran the FBI agents through the snow. And I believe that the Feds let Adriana loose to go talk to her killer boyfriend alone while she broke the news she had flipped on him. And I believe Little Carmine just meekly tucked his tail between his legs and ran back to Miami. Gimme a break, the Sopranos is no more believable than a Harry Potter movie. It was just a wussy, non-commital ending, all hype and no substance.

I think the idea was that the feds weren't after Tony (hence the quip of his council, "it's not illegal to park your car unless it's in front of a hydrant").

No way! Maybe he wasn't listed on the indictment, but the FBI agents had the gardener with the snowblower down in a hammerlock and were cuffing him. Do you really believe that they let a recognized, powerful mob boss just scoot away without attempting to detain him because the gardener was a bigger prize to catch? Sorry, nobody on earth ate enough paint chips as a child to believe that scenario. If they were there to scoop up Johnny they damn well would have scooped up Tony too.

Maybe the fact that they did know who Tony was is the reason they didn't arrest him. I'm pretty sure the FBI was observing Johnny Sacks as he went outside. Since all the FBI agents are able to communicate with each other, an order was probably given to no arrest Tony because they really don't have anything on him yet. I don't really know why they arrested the gardner. Maybe they it's just that they didn't know who he was, so they took him down to find out if maybe he was one of the people they were supposed to get.

Then again, maybe Tony just got lucky and managed to get away.

I only watch Sopranos because everybody else does, but I have to agree... the writing in this show is total crap.

This is trippy. Everytime there are eggs on the Sopranos, something bad happens, usually someone dying.

I wrote about it on my weblog.

  1. Last season Ralph asked Tony if he wanted some eggs before Tony killed him.
  2. Adriana asked Christopher if he wanted eggs before getting whacked.
  3. Tony's goomah made him Egg Beaters (with hot sauce, LOL!) before catching on fire.
  4. Tony stepped on eggshells in the scene before whacking Tony B.
  5. Carmine Sr was eating egg salad when he had a stroke.
  6. Last season Tony was eating scambled eggs with Bobby at a diner in the scene before Christopher killed the cop.

Anyone got more?

Did you really watch the show? Tony B was shot in the head with a shotgun by Tony S. Is that a simple solution? That pacified Johnny Sack to a reasonable degree, and Tony's proclamation of "We're in this to support our family" further reduced the animosity between them. They are bosses, and in the end they're there to make money; killing each other encumbers such progress.

It seems you're just more interested in people going all out and killing everyone, so perhaps Goodfellas would help satiate your morbid appetite since the killing and beating of this episode did not.

I agree, they just show good things and then leave them off and you never hear about them again.
lots of time passes between show also. it was like winter on last night show and two weeks before it was maybe before fall.

From reading the few posts you have made it is obvious to me that you know a thing or two about writing crap.

Apparently David Chase, the show's creator will BEGIN writing the final season in APRIL 2005!

That means episodes won't air until 2006!! Talk about Chase being a SLOOOOOW writer!

Tony stepped on eggshells in the scene before whacking Tony B.

wasnt it after he shot him? because he shot him and tony b. dropped the groceries, then tony steps on one?

No it was before. he was throwing away the painting he ripped off of Paulies wall that pictured Tony dressed as a General with the Race horse. he stepped back and stepped on egg shells.

wow never made those connections before. Good job

WTF is the problem people?! There was TOTAL resolution to the issues of this season. Plus, you've got a GREAT setup for next season.

I really liked the scene with Anthony Jr. He's going to follow in his father's footsteps, and I even think they'll show that in the next season.

Exactly what I'm saying, Descartes. The sopranos is not a gorefest, which is what sets it aside from every other mob story, and makes it so good.

My answer too, total resolution to all the ongoing problems. Totally open for them to do anything they want to next season. From the beginning Ive said I think it will end with Tony either being totally alone, IE The Godfather, or with his son taking over his position. Hope not, I hate the little sh*t! Christopher just doesnt have the smarts at this point nor does anyone else.

Was expecting Tony to see the Bear on his patio when he went home in the end. In great literature the Bear represents him.

Watch Deadwood?

"Its this kind of thing that made me leave Wilkes-Barre (Pa). Fell of the couch laughing saying me too, me too!

I agree the first episode with the bear was in the fall, then a pool party in the summer now fall and winter again. I guess that happens when you take two years to write one season.
