I'm now ready to digest an alternate timeline, which I wasn't in 2009.

Alternate timeline is ok but wildly divergent style is not, IMO. That was my main issue with the reboot movies. Using Christopher Pine as the common thread there is little separating the new Star Trek movies from "Jack Ryan- Shadow Recruit." (Which brings up an interesting point in that the new Jack Ryan movie is not like Hunt for Red October or Patriot Games. Is Chris Pine the "genericized action reboot of a somewhat thoughtful political series" curse?)

Sounds like it's gonna be in the J.J.-verse, which I'm a little iffy on but not surprised. Regardless, bring it on!

At least unlike Star Wars, they managed to keep the ToS, TNG, Voyager, etc. storylines intact while creating a new Trek "universe" to tell stories in.

As long as they keep Lindelhof away from this new show I'll be happy.

I'd bet that the reason that the 2nd movie wasn't has satisfying as the first JJ Abrams movie is because that hack was involved.

I love Star Trek, but I shudder to think about this. As has already been said - putting it on a streaming-only service that no one subscribes to already makes sure it will die. However, it also insures a low budget.

We also get to explore 'contemporary issues'.

I wonder if Jenner will make an appearance. You better believe we're going to have to deal with trans-gender aliens, over-zealous police.... fun times.

Pretty much. They aren't going to invest much money or effort in a series they aren't even willing to put on TV. I predict the quality of this will only barely be above the ST fanfic crap that gets released these days. If we're lucky they'll torpedo the thing after the pilot so that the franchise isn't ruined and put into hibernation for 10 years.

Was super excited...then saw it's streaming only. Wtf. No way this will get any type of budget.

Or terrorism. Though there were a few episodes on TNG with terrorism and warring factions as the central theme. Things haven't changed that much in 20 years. But I'm worried whether you can appeal to wider audience and still pull off what TNG did. I'm still making my way through the remaining seasons, and it's hard to imagine anything that can match their nuanced qualities while also expanding the scope of the potential audience. I see one or more things falling very short.

Let's see here. Gene is gone. Michael Piller is gone. I don't see Rick Berman's name listed. I am a bit skeptical but I'll still give it a shot.

Personally, I have the same reservations already mentioned - cgi, money grab, pandering to the lowest common denominator...

But..
I'd be very interesting if they decided to do a "TNG" in the JJ-Verse. After Star Fleet is taken over by pretty boys base jumping in space.. the legacy and philosophy would have to change over the 80ish years in between. The whole crew of the of the "D" would be catastrophically altered. There'd never be a place for a Jean-Luc Picard on that ship. Total Bro's - in - Space. Obviously going around with Klingon's partying across the galaxy. Would explain the better graphics - They'd have to develop technology to Peacock the universe for space babes.

Total fanboy fantasy would be Q going full antagonist against the brohard humans and basically set up for a Man kills God story line (spoilers - they throw out all subtext and subtly and just come out ans say Q was the bases of all mythological/religious deities - can't make it too hard to follow for the masses).

And obviously Data would also have to be a bad guy in this Universe.. Just throwing this out there.. King of the Borg.

Can Frat-based-Fraternity and extreme sports with plenty of lens flares be enough to explore the galaxy??

I see this being a lot like blood and chrome. I mean not bad but not great. Either way it will be cool to see some new trek.

It's implied that it will air on CBS first, unless CBS is extraordinarily dumb. As for "contemporary issues", gender issues have been explored in every series of Trek, as have police states and governmental overreach. No need to get your panties in a twist if they discover hermaphroditic aliens.

Seems pretty clear that other than the pilot they are planning on this being a pay stream only show.

Yeah. They only confirmed that one episode would ever actually air. I would hope that they use the response to that airing to decide if it should remain exclusive to the streaming service or not, but chances are that they want a good response to the broadcast with traditional audiences clamoring for more specifically to drive them to the streaming service.

$5.99 per month

And it seems to suck. I was just looking at it to see if I could catch PoI season 4 and apparently it is pretty limited. All access to what exactly?

I hope this isn't really streaming only. Then again, I also hope this won't end up like SGU was to the other Stargates and just complete rubbish.

So it's a Star Trek show done by a guy with no experience in real Star Trek style on a subscription-based service nobody subscribes to?

Dead Show Walking!

I personally eagerly await lots of nonsensical cliché plots to continue the style of the last two Star Trek movies.

I think the Star Trek franchise needs to go into cold storage until someone comes along with some new and interesting ideas (ie. the kind of stuff that makes great sci-fi, as opposed to an action flick).

Here's hoping it will be worth watching!
Here's hoping it won't be done up like it's being filmed with a shaky smartphone. Stargate Universe comes to mind.

The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network.
HAHAHAHAA!!!!!! Oh god that was so clever! They used "blast off" because it's a show about space! I get it!

Guess that's their plan then, although I can't see such a strategy working on a large scale unless they really blow it out of the park. They'd need something akin to a Game of Thrones to jump-start a $7/month a service, and CBS's largest current successes are Big Bang Theory and NCIS. Making a House of Cards/Game of Thrones style blockbuster would be uncharted waters for them.

Sure some die-hard Trekkers would sign up regardless, but I can't imagine it'd be very profitable on that market alone.

Could not be successful enough for me to subscribe. I'd just buy the season on disc.

Was hoping for Captain Worf. They could have simply called it "Klingons". Imagine the untapped potential.
