Which one would you recommend for someone who likes SWTOR but not EQ. Aion looks intriguing because I like the skimpy outfits

Honestly, the question is WHAT do you like about SWTOR? If it's what I think most people liked - the story lines - then really, none of the above. Stick with single player titles that have solid, rich story lines. Really, that's what SWTOR is - essentially 8 full fledged single-player campaigns in true traditional Bioware storytelling style with a persistent multiplayer component wrapped around it to keep you playing after the meat and potatoes are done.

LOTRO had a nice overarching story line to it, but in my opinion there were so many side quests that did nothing to further the main story so the main story line got lost quickly.

Star Trek Online actually has some well written missions that provide a fairly unique take on the history of the Star Trek universe. Unfortunately the gameplay of STO gets stale and repetitive very quickly.

I loved Fallen Earth. I thought the overarching story was absolutely great. The atmosphere of the game was spot on. The game itself made me actually feel engrossed in a post-apocalyptic world, and the gameplay was... non-traditional and somewhat refreshingly different.

Vanguard is a nice game. Just no story behind it. It's a huge traditional MMORPG world though, and something kind of different.

EQ2 is, imho, much the same. There's a bit of story and lore there, but nothing worth mentioning. Just a big world to go beat up on.

I'm looking forward to Planetside 2 because, well, it's not a RPG. As much as I suck as FPSes, it's basically a huge, persistent, objective based version of Battlefield 3. Lots of action going on, and lots of stuff to do, and lots of roles to fill.

This is why I lost interest in LOTRO. I loved the big storyline, but the further into the game I got the more muddled that storyline became. My playing time was consumed by side stuff which was nowhere near as cool or interesting as the major story arcs. A real shame because the cool overall.

Oh... I'm also waiting (im)patiently for Neverwinter.

Yeah that will be awesome. I played NWN1 constantly for a year or so. Great game.

Yeah the ToR website is totally jacked, check server status on it...lol

The site going down is part of the maintenance for the big patch today I think, 1.5. I'm guessing once the patch is completed and servers come back up the F2P will actually be in place.

And lol, I don't think anyone I know is looking forward to Neverwinter. And that's after probably tens of thousands of hours between us on NWN.

Well that sucks. What's wrong with it?

Wow.

I'm mildly optimistic. Only mildly because it's being done by Cryptic, so there's a high probability that it will be COMPLETELY different at zero hour than it is 5 minutes before release. (Anybody remember the zero hour Champions Online patch?)

Neverwinter has been quietly getting a LOT of praise from pretty much anyone that has played/reviewed it, which amazes me. I guess given I'm not going into it with high hopes in the first place...

Supposedly it plays very similar to Vindictus/Tera (I haven't played either of them myself), so basically much like action game that puts a lot of emphasis on movement and precision.

Additionally it's based off of 4th edition DnD which just doesn't have quite the complexity or building depth to it that we liked so much in NWN's 3.0 rules. (I have old notebooks and notepads filled to the brim with different class/ability/feat/skill/gear combos trying to find something new and effective for each server we played on, loved that)

Ultimately it could be a good game still, but I don't think it's going to draw me/us in as much since it's doing away with a lot of what made NWN so great and so distinct (imo), whereas we already have a glut of heavy action/light RPG MMOs and I'm not sure throwing the DnD rules in there will be enough to set it apart and make it interesting.

Ahh, was reading on my phone since the site is blocked here. Did not see that.

It's actually true of the entire doc - every thing that looks "ineligible" for F2P accounts actually has some type of limitation when you click/hover over the cell.

I'll have to look when I get home. That $4.99 preferred status, is that a one-time or monthly payment? I'm thinking of running through a full story again; I had so much fun going through my Commando's story before.

Oh cool, so I'm set. Will have to start downloading it all again when I get home. D:

KT

...you can only use 2 skill bars as "preferred"
...you can only list 5 items at once on GTN
...you can only have 2 crew skills (completely, utterly gimped if you want to ...craft anything)

I mean, honestly...the game is broken without being able to use 4 skill bars. Well, once you hit the 40s+

One suggestion I've seen in the ArsTechnica thread is to subscribe for one month before December, so you get your backlog of "cartel coins" from older months plus the 500? coins for your new month.

Use the coins to unlock things you care about like skill bars, character slots / classes, etc. then let your subscription lapse.

This makes sense if you would get at least $10 worth of coins for your older months. I haven't done the math to see how many older months you'd need.

Interesting. It looks like I'd get 900 coins, plus the 500 for subscribing for a month. I wonder what 1400 coins would buy me.

edit: I wonder if THESE PRICES are still legit.

250 coins per quickbar? 1200 coins to unlock purple gear? Ouch. I wonder if it's per character or account-wide.

edit 2: lol?

100 Complimentary Cartel Coins Per Month
Security Key Reward for activation of a digital or physical Security Key

There's free coins on my account just because I have a security key? Cool.

edit 3: After logging in, it seems quickbars are 250 credits each.

Also... interestingly enough... it seems as if ALL 11 of my characters are playable. It tells me I have 11 of 2 character slots used. I'm sure that will get fixed... eventually.

I was curious to try it out, but man... micro-transactions are one thing, but making you pay to toggle whether or not your helm to display? really?

and all my characters are flagged to be renamed... yeah, that's not making me super keen on jumping back into the game.

An unfortunate repercussion of the server migrations, yea. I lost two names that I liked; but fortunately they did make it so that multiple players can share the same Legacy name at least a few patches ago iirc.

I was able to log in last night, feels very "Greek" to me after playing GW2 over the last few months but that's to be expected. The December sub to quality for old Cartel Coins to nab some unlocks is a pretty decent idea. I might do that because I'd really like to be able to level some more of my characters and see myself coming back to the game for new content eventually as well.

It sounds like some of the unlocks are temporary and some are permanent however, like I think warzone/ops access works like a weekly 'license' but are others like, say, crew skill access permanent?
