that's the problem with WoW..

and again sure we take whomever in Rift.. since we are all friends and family we help each other instead of replacing someone because they may not have the gearscore.
or the knowledge..

What stopped you from doing the exact same thing in WoW?

Is it really about the game, or is it more about which game your friends are playing at the moment?

It's the game and the community.. both trash in the last couple years.. hence why all the "nicer" people moved on to other games.. ive played the game since Alpha and it was never like it was through LK and now Cata.. the entire mentality of people changed and got super elitist and greedy.. cant be bothered with anyone but themselves..

to tell you the truth there is only 2 of my true freinds playing Rift now as well but still not running into that "elitist prick" attitude that is so prevalent on WoW.

I sincerely hope those type of people stay there.. and TOR is more full of RPG minded adults.

I completely understand. My point is that in an MMO, which game your friends are playing matter much more than the games themselves.

I'm lucky that my MMO friends are spread out evenly pretty much everywhere, in WoW, LotRO, Rift, RoM, some crazy people were even over at FF XIV although I never followed those guys that went there . Right now I know whichever MMO I'm feeling like reactivating I have a guild and a group of friends I know I will enjoy playing with.

I have high hopes for SWTOR, but in the end it's kind of pointless to hope that the (perceived) community stays a certain way that you like. The elitist/troll/kiddies/what have you *will* come over, it's inevitable. Just hope that your friends stick with you there, so you don't have to bother playing with anybody else.

I don't agree. The type of game you create attracts a certain kind of player. WoW has always focused on gear/raiding/being elite. Even from back before Molten Core there were elements of the game that were extremely competitive and un-sociable towards ungeared and new players.

Instead of fostering community building and inclusion the game went the way of catering to the elitists and raiders etc. The developers chose which player set they wanted. The hardcore no-life people that have literal years of game time in WoW.

TOR doesn't have to go this route, they can choose which players they respond to and which communities they want to foster within their game. We'll see how they choose, but they don't need to follow WoW's lead.

This is what we all hope for but the sad reality is that all MMO development teams are modeling their games more or less after WoW. Decent leveling then when you hit level cap, grind grind grind for gear. It's the only way they can see as being successful with little risk, if they try something new, the game could be a giant flop and they don't want to risk that.

I installed the new build overnight, I'm interested to see what's changed. Though I only played old beta for like two hours

Weren't you in the old beta? What changed? I thought the last build was "good enough."

Nothing major Ive seen yet. A lot of small things. Just polish mostly. If youre a fan of questing you will like the game. If not, I wouldnt recommend it, unless theres some major changes from now until release.

Id like to make it to level cap but questing is sooo boring to me.

I enjoy questing to relax. I feel like I may want to RP a bit in this game, too.

To anyone who knows - how group-friendly is this game?

I grew up on DAoC where the most efficient way to xp was questing and grouping. Now it seems like leveling groups is frowned upon by developers as everyone in the party takes an xp hit. I miss being able to just find a pickup group, go into a dungeon, and kill stuff for hours "just because".

That's good news to me since I'd be buying it as a substitute for a single-player KOTOR.

It'll have to depend on the quest. If it is an actual mission then it can be fun. If it's go kill 100 womprats and come back or go deliver this and come back. Yeah....

Devs stated in one of the Comic-Con panels that grouping up is encouraged and will be rewarded with some very nice vendor gear.

I suspect a lot of people will solo unless necessary [group quests, flashpoints, etc].

I have a bit of simplistic question...

What's the naming of characters going to be like? In EQ you chose a name, at level 20 you chose a surname, and later on you could get titles like Apprentice/expert/master Chef, or whatever, titles based on your progression in your class, or titles based on raid events. Later on you could even change your surname once every few days.

There was even a monk title called Master, and that title didn't come out until a few years after release. There was a guy whose name from well before that was Bator, so...you guessed it...he earned the title Master to become Master Bator.

I wish it would be like UO and would allow spaces.

I too would have much preferred a single player KOTOR. I might give this game a try if there is a great single player experience, but I dont see how you can integrate this into an MMO. I have never played an MMO, and dont want to get into the whole MMO thing, but if it is as singe player friendly as the devs say, I might try it.

So the new build just crashes right away each time I load it lol, I think I may need to reinstall however. After I uninstalled the old build when I was downloading everything again another game I was playing caused it to crash, which I suppose possibly mucked everything up.

Regardless of any titles you might be able to add to your name, I also think it would be nice if they you let you use spaces in your name. Much less problem with names already being taken. If the name you want is already in use you can just add a (different) last name. Works pretty well in games like City of Heroes and EVE Online.

I also think they should go single server, but that doesn't seem likely.

That's very impractical in the real world, you have to look at the big picture ie world wide audience/lag etc... so servers in different countries etc....also they will probably have both PvP and PvE servers to choose from IMHO.

No, he's right about WoW. I've played wow since closed beta and I did the whole high end raiding scene, my guild at the time finished everything from tier 1 through sunwell top 20 US (hint: the guild was on korgath and has since debanded.)

Anyway, the whole 16 year old basement dwelling min maxer has gotten ridiculous. You have to have 20 addons just to raid in a high end guild now, and you can get an addon called powerauras that takes a dump on your UI and covers your screen with nonsense when you're about to make a mistake or get a bad debuff. Then there's stuff like DBM. And god forbid you make a mistake or your raid leader will nerd rage. These types of idiots have gotten way worse in WoW in recent years, not to mention you have to get good combat logs on worldoflogs just to be successful these days it seems like.

Because of this I feel like raiding is a waste of time, you know well before the instance comes out what all the bosses will do and you have addons like dbm and power auras that basically hold your hand through the content. And then there's the whole rehash an instance 20 times, such as ZG/ZA. How many times do I have to kill onyxia again?

In rift, its completely different. There's no reliance on addons, I feel genuinely surprised when I encounter new content, And I haven't really run into any basement dwelling douchebags yet. The community seems completely different, and the game is better (IMO) than WoW by far. Anyway, I hope SWTOR has a community like rift - acting like adults and not spouting racial slurs over game related achievements.

I agree completely with the rest of your post, but for this part, do you remember how WoW used to be? It was exactly like you described Rift. Hopefully Rift doesn't evolve the same way.
