Just got back from seeing it with my wife. I couldn't care less but she likes SW and so we went.
I found it monotonous (saberfights) and loaded with soap opera dialogue (Padme: "I don't know you any more"). Watching Vader and Obi-Wan saberfight for an hour knowing neither one can die takes all the suspense away.
On the way home my wife said it was average to below average and expected better. She also thought Anakin's turn to the dark side was unbelievably fast.
"Turn to the dark side, Anakin"
"No! Well....OK."
I found myself daydreaming about incongruous things like "they can fly across the galaxy but can't figure out how to hold on to a light sabre" and "they fight with guns that shoot projectiles - what, they never heard of bombs?"
Well, first off, how can you really get any suspense out of something that you know everything about? You KNOW neither can die, you knew that going into it, so given that, I think Lucas did an impressive job with what he had to work with.
Also...remember, its fantasy. If he made them think of everything, imagine how it could be...for instance:
Why the buzz droids? Couldn't ObiWan have just Force-pushed them off? Or Anakin?
Why did they not sense R2 was in trouble in the beginning?
Why didn't Anakin just run at ObiWan instead of jumping over him? Or maybe throw some lava at him?
Why does Vader even need to look like that? After his burns healed, couldn't he have just worn a mask for breathing?
The list goes on...the whole point of this isn't to nitpick, but to illustrate you need to let go of your logic and enjoy it. There were plenty of the same things in the old trilogy, you just haven't thought about them.
