OMG Stop with the damn clapping every time he fucking breathes.

dude, pay attention, look for your reps and see how they respond.

It's the freaking State of the Union, it's pretty freaking important.

Indeed. Important enough to toss around the word owned when trying to discuss it intelligently.

There comes a point when your opponent is giving off such clues, be it in a meeting, be it negotiations, be it in representing entire house, the word owned is perfect in this context. You know when you have them. You know when you own them face to face. That's all I'm saying and if you can't interpret that language...owned.

Nothing Bush was talking about tonight or ever for that matter has ever owned anyone but his retarded supporters. Congratulations.
Some might argue that Bushed "owned" the American people by starting a war based on lies, resulting in the death of thousands of American lives and wasting tons of our resources on killing people in another country all for what? What do we get out of it?

My favorite part of watching these speeches is to see how the opposing side reacts. It was that way with Ronald Reagan, GW Senior and Bill Clinton. I just can't get over the fact that politics is present in a speach like this. Granted the speech is political in origin, it is just plain fun to watch how the other side reacts. Mostly, I know, not much come from it except a lot of hot air just like this forum.

No problem with that with me other than it is tax cuts not "relief".

Just match the spending to the income.

Oh wait ... Bush wants to spend $350-$450 billion more than the income? Doesn't work for me. I don't like dumping my problems on to a future generation.

There was nothing new here. The whole thing said to me "Lame Duck". I do admire his sudden interest in the Israel/Palestine situation, but realistically speaking, what pipe is he smoking? That isn't going to happen in one year. He is just using it as another "feel-good" issue to rally behind to save his legacy. Think of it as the opposite of the gay marriage and abortion issues - neither side gets anything done even if they wanted to, but bringing up these issues just serves as news fodder for issues that they don't feel like discussing publically. Again, nothing to see here. No substance.

One thing I would like to hear in the next SOTU address would be the following opening sentence - "Please hold your applause until after the POTUS has addressed the nation." Translation: STFU so we can hopefully hear and soak in things that should be important. All it does is provide pointless analysis talking points for the 24-hr news guys. It has gotten almost comical. The focus of media coverage is to reaction and not substance. The SOTU is supposed to inform us as to what challenges face our nation and the choices we face in the upcoming year. This speech did nothing of the sort.

With all the hot air being generated in the capital building this time of year, we should cut a hole in the top of the capitol dome, outfit it with turbines/generators, and we wouldn't have to worry about energy policy until the next speech comes along. They probably already have generators attached to the founding fathers' corpses to harness all that rotational energy they are producing in said graves. I can see that being in the next wave of "green power" advertisements that ChevronExxonMobiloco cranks out.

Sigh, I'm too young to be this cynical about politics. What happened to the days when everybody aspired to public office? I'm neither democrat nor republican and the only thing I'm sure of right now is the only change we will have is a complete and total housecleaning.

And nothing more than Pelosi getting shut the hell up once again. She has no voice, she has no support. Shes owned. Game over.

If people can't read body language that's not my problem. The dems have zero leadership other than "but, but, but, but bush!"

I didn't say anything about those turds either so don't put words in my mouth. I didn't watch, but I can smell the Bush turd from here.

And by the way, Bush has support?

(just how many of the candidates are running on Bush's support? ZERO as they are staying far away from the bastard - with good reason).

What are you talking about? It's not the Speaker's job to do anything other than introduce the President and sit there. What did you expect her to do, start verbally heckling him during the speech?

Her "body language" that you think you are such an expert at was probably mirrored by most of the people across the country: Boredom at hearing the exact same shit we've heard in the SOTU speech for the last three or four years.

Regardless of whatever victory your delusional mind tries to salvage from Bush's completely uninspiring performance, the fact is that tonight is about what the President did, not the Speaker of the House.

Just try to take comfort in the fact that the Democratic Response was equally terrible.

Look at Cheney, its like hes thinking " I can't wait to get out of here!, I wonder whats for dinner ?"

More like wondering who is for dinner.

Well he is a leader. His body language and eyes say it all. He's paying attention, not so much for Pelosi.
Cheney's a damn good ventriliquist, I didn't see him move his lips once. The only critism I have for his act is that he keeps slurring his R's

As the last GWB State of the union speech passes into history, the yahoo news conclusion is that congress is unlikely to buy the GWB proposals.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200...jgcajXjT5fHvKtNHus0NUE

Unfortunately it now begs the question as spineless democrats have let GWB&co. have far too much of his way during 2007. And will the dems suddenly grow a backbone in 2008?

And also begs the question, now that the November election looms, will the GOP continue in its lockstep loyalty to GWB when they know the public is going to vote them out of office if they don't get off stuck on stupid. The time of glowing promises about a GOP agenda is long
lame duck passed, with 08 being the last chance year that those glowing promises must be redeemed with results.

Even if congressional approval is in the sewer for their failure to rein in GWB, its hard to understand why the GOP would think the public will punish the dems for that failure.

The first test may well be over extending FISA. And will Obama or Clinton lead the fight like Dodd did before? If the dems are going to ask the American public for their support in November, shouldn't they show some results.

I will not be voting for obama.
Anyone that chummy with the drunk driving killer loses my vote.
A plus for obama, associating with teddy is proof he's white house material.

I hope that you didn't vote for or support Bush. After all, he IS that chummy with a drunk driving killer himself. In fact, he married her.

I would call it "pwned" the American people. I bet a large part of the soldiers that have died in Iraq did so thinking they were taking down Saddam for his part in 9/11.

Wow, so, after watching the State of the Union address last night... I have to say I'm not surprised, what a joke.

He didn't say ANYTHING new, it was just the typical neo-conservatism cluster-masturbatory crap as before. No real information. I was kind of hoping that he'd own up to something, anything, but I guess I should already know better by now. How fucking naive of me, I'm actually mad at myself for that.

I'd like to actually hear a State of the Union address someday, you know, one that actually shares openly and honestly the state of our union with us.

So anyway. God damn every person who voted for him, ever. Every single one! <3

You are right in stating that test scores for the NCLB standards have gone up. What you fail to realize is that America's educational standards as a whole have dropped though.

But that isn't really surprising. If you tell people that they have to know x and x only to pass a test and receive full funding....all you are going to get are schools that go overboard to teach x with little to no regards for trying to show the kids that y is out there also.

The report bases its conclusions about achievement mainly on international test scores released last December. They show that compared with their peers in Europe, Asia and elsewhere, 15-year-olds in the United States are below average in applying math skills to real-life tasks.

Top performers included Finland, Korea, the Netherlands, Japan, Canada and Belgium.

What manowar821 said.

And spider, that's quite a Pelosi hangup you have there. You may want to keep that to yourself, what with being such a Bush supporter and all. If you're going to bring in physical responses and expressions as a qualifier for leadership abilities, well then the jokes on you buddy! Bush's immediate response to the unfolding events of 9/11 indicates he is even less of a leader than Pelosi, so please, enough with the Rush-like crowing over nothing. You can't stand the Dems, Repub clusterfvcks be damned - WE GET IT.

Seriously. There are schools out there that only teach the test - so if the kids can get a job that only conforms to the test they are fine. Need any type of rounded education or critical thinking skills? Forget it. No Child Left Behind is a joke. I am not aware of any actual teacher that supports it (other than those in the Bush camp)

FWIW: If a school fails for 5 years in a row they would lose their funding. So what do some schools do? Change their name and *bam* 5 more years of funding

Well, even if they are "teaching the test" -are the kids learning? Why yes they are. How the hell do you people think we should judge performance if you don't test to some standard? Without a standard all you have is a jumbled mess of performances that you can't get any good data from since they all might be doing it different. Now this is not to say that NCLB is perfect, because it isn't but the way some of you people whine about it does no good because you attack the wrong part of it without suggesting how it could be done better.

FWIW - NCLB was a bi-partisan bill written by 'ol swimmer IIRC.

There is a point to what you say and I very much agree that spending should be brought in line with receipts. However, I don't think receipts should be brought in line with spending... if that makes sense. Increasing taxes is not the way to balance our current budget - reducing spending however is. ...IMO...
