However, there will be a few carriers that will bring it into the new flu season (Sept/Oct). If the Swine H1N1 isn't included in next season's flu vaccine, then we will be SCREWED.

This is exactly what happened with the 1918 flu pandemic. 1st wave occurred in spring and was mild. The virus disappeared over the summer months and then came back with full force in the 2nd wave in the fall/winter.

temperature has nothing to do with how the virus spreads. It's simply the habits of people in different seasons.

Really? Please enlighten me. I thought that there is a preferred temperature to which virus & bacteria can replicate faster.

Well, the good thing is, unlike birds (birdflu), pigs can't fly... so we're relatively safe.

except its the dirty Mexicans bringing over....

Chanho dont be a gung-ho racist, this is a worldwide concern not just a regional one.

The Mexicans made it worldwide so it seems like an accurate statement to me. Maybe you're the one being racist? Racist!

Labeling them "dirty Mexicans" is uncalled for.

It has come to our attention that two University of Canterbury staff and
two of our students travelled from the United States at the weekend on a
plane carrying secondary school students infected with Influenza A.

Students will be aware that Swine Flu (H1N1) is a new strain of
Influenza A.

The two staff members and two students have been asked to remain in
isolation for three days having commenced a precautionary course of
Tamiflu. They will be guided by doctors as to when they can return to
the University.

During this period of uncertainty about Swine Flu, it is important to
keep abreast of current and correct information, especially regarding
impending travel. Appropriate local information can be found at
http://www.fluinfo.org.nz/

Another useful link is http://urgent.internationalsos.com/default.aspx.

Students should consult a medical professional if they have any health
concerns, particularly if they have visited North America or Mexico in
the past fortnight.

Students who are intending to travel to these areas in the near future
are advised to monitor developments.

On a related note, I saw that pork prices are falling due to the Swine Flu coverage. I'll have to start looking for deal on fresh pork.

yeah i dont get that either.

you dont get it by eating pigs.

fuck it. I'm totally taking advantage of the lower pork prices. I was just thinking this the other day, actually. That this will most likely lead to a drop in prices due to unfounded fears. Cha-ching!

WHO upped the pandemic alert level to 5.

Phase 5 is characterized by human-to-human spread of the virus into at least two countries in one WHO region. While most countries will not be affected at this stage, the declaration of Phase 5 is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent and that the time to finalize the organization, communication, and implementation of the planned mitigation measures is short.

PANIC!1!!!!!1!1!

Really? Please enlighten me. I thought that there is a preferred temperature to which virus & bacteria can replicate faster.

Some bacteria have certain temperature zones in which they can replicate, but if they can live in the human body, they can handle temperature just fine.

They don't do well outside of the body though....
hmm, had to look this whole thing up, and apparently as recently as just last year they discovered what makes it mightier in the winter.
It has a lipid coating that acts like a hard shell in colder temperatures, so after getting expelled in a sneeze, it might survive a little while on the surface.

Realize that if you are in near vicinity of someone with the flu in the summer, or even a cooler day any time of year, the virus will still be able to infect you if you were to provide a nearly immediate means of doing so. Person sneezed, you inhaled. Person sneezed or coughed into hand, shake hands and touch face. That can get you infected, and it might be summer.

But apparently, this very recent discovery I had not heard about. That immediate need for transmission isn't necessary as the virus could actually tolerate the environment longer in the cold, so it'll still be capable of infecting you awhile after putting your hand on a surface with the bug and then giving it a route into the warm inside where the lipid shell will 'melt'.

However, it still is the habit of the seasons. Close proximity to people, other than family, is more common in the flu season (october-march, give or take a few months depending on local climate). Secondary chances then also come from more people at indoor establishments, thus more surfaces for the virus to linger on. But the whole surfaces thing still tricks me up, because most places inside, are going to be warm, not cold. Else we wouldn't be inside. And there aren't as many surfaces commonly touched that are exposed to the cold. So sure it may survive longer, but I'm not quite buying it is the sole reason for flu season being in and close to winter.

There will always be individuals who break the common mold, gathering indoors more in the summer (air conditioning), staying outside and touching every surface they see and then touching their mouth, nose, or eyes. Or the ones who get sick from kissing or sharing something. I've had quite a few colds and flu infections during warm months, part of the reason I never bought it - and have had family (at different times) or friends equally get that. It's all about habits imho, and the majority of people fit the bill of closer proximity during colder months.

WHO actually changed their pandemic alert level definitions a year or so ago. Back then a Phase 4 would have been today's Phase 6.

Testing facilities are now getting overwhelmed with tests. A result that took 6 hours the past couple days is now taking days to get the results back.

A military base in california now has two infections with 30 in quarantine. My buddy (a marine) who is stationed there was told if they get that number to 50 they will shut down the base. They didn't say what all that means though.

Fort-Worth, Texas just shut down the whole school district until Monday.

So the question is how BAD is it to get this disease in the US compared to the regular flu? I mean is this like the uber flu or will I just feel the same? Is it harder to fight?

Same, as easy to fight. More than likely less easy to control. Seems like it spreads faster than most.

I felt a sore throat on Sunday morning. I was at a wedding and dinner party the night before. Should I be worried. I'm a lazy bastard. When I get sick I just take vitamin c and let my body fight it off. I usually go to school/work unless I'm hacking and dying that it seems like I'm gonna make people run away or something. Today I had a very very light cough that itches every like once an hour or something.
