Yeah, this is so like two months ago right? Who cares about the rest of the world? Experts predict that Swine Flu will keep floating around the world and come back to the US during our normal flu season.

By then hopefully we will have a vaccine. But Im not altering my immune system (again) to prevent a possible infection. My immunity is very much screwed up as it is thanks to the US Gubment.

I haven't kept up with the news lately, but I thought it wasn't that serious. Pardon my ignorance but didn't they declare it to be relatively harmless?

There is only so much they can say in the news. It is not new, it is just there. You'll hear more now.

This is not going to end well...

Not really. What happened is the crazy apocalyptic hype was causing confusion and the media essentially corrected themselves, saying that so far it appears to behave relatively similar to normal influenza and that healthy people shouldn't have issues.

We'll see what happens when flu season comes around. Not only are we still seeing the bug linger around during the summer, but it's kicking up dust everywhere on the planet.

What's going to be the kicker is what it looks like when it comes back. Will it just be the lingering bug that is still around here, or will it pick up a new mutation after hanging around in the Southern Hemisphere and jump back up to the North for our flu season...

Regardless, no matter the hype, I most likely will not get a flu vaccine. I won't waste the stock on me, and I don't want to put unnecessary vaccines into me. Although, if it ends up as a virus that is worse for those with strong/overactive immune systems, then uhoh down goes us.

That is what is scary about this thing, most fatality is in healthy 30-50 year olds... Which means it's your immune system going hyper and killing your ass.

Unrelated:
I partied with a girl last weekend who was one of the few that came down with swine flu.

Nice girl. My friend made out with her.

Anyway, our immune systems naturally begin to attack our own bodies as we age. Arthritis, vision and hearing loss which are usually associated with aging are part of the immune system turning inward.

Our bodies are naturally designed to one day terminate. Our souls however live on with God.

Well so far that's been undecided. If that were completely true, more college kids who come down with it would be boom, dead. Then again, all the college kids are going to the hospital as soon as symptoms appear of the flu because the hype has got everyone panicked. Which I think is good. I usually hate the media blowing things out of proportion, but they might just be saving lives. The sensationalism is really getting to people and making them cautious.

But so far the deaths in the US have been said to be from people with underlying medical conditions. Sadly they aren't saying what these people have had before, which I think is ridiculous. I don't know if its the news media not saying, or if the family has stepped in and said, don't talk about my family member and what was wrong with them. I just don't get it.
Did they have a medical disorder that weakened their immune system? Did they have an immune disorder that basically meant they had a crazy and overactive immune system? If it's bringing down people with weak immune systems, then it's just like an ordinary influenza strain. If it's hitting people with strong immune systems, that's something important to get out.
The one NYC individual, a principle or something, was said to have been on a ventilator for quite a few days before dieing. I don't know what happens to individuals when they die from normal influenza, do they need ventilators? For the 1918 outbreak, that was what was needed: healthy people with strong immune systems had major lung issues from the body attacking the lung tissue.

I wish I'd just get it now. The big killer with pandemics tends to be medical care. When there is no care available, people who could be saved start dieing. But right now, people getting it are relatively few in comparison to those getting the flu during flu season, so treatment is readily accessible. Get it now, and if the virus doesn't mutate before it comes back in the flu season, you have immunity.

If it comes back and forces a lot of people in the hospital, hopefully these people don't need ventilators. No country really has all that many. Currently we have enough to treat people who need them for various things, but not for a disease outbreak that causes many to need ventilators. Tying up all the ventilators would be a major killer.

Of course, it might just come back and act like a normal flu. A mutation could still happen, that mutation might make it easier to spread and survive. Diseases that kill are ultimately not very effective for viruses, because that's less time the virus can use the body to spread to others. Not that viruses are exactly conscious of this, but that might be why deadly outbreaks aren't exactly common. Haven't had one in awhile, and so it has followed the same historical pattern of the 1918 outbreak. Hit a few in the off-season, kind of sleep for awhile, and come back with a vengeance in the flu season. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

06/11/2009 UPDATE:

On Wednesday, the WHO reported that the virus has infected at least 27,737 people in 74 countries and caused 141 deaths. Most cases have been in North America, but Europe and Australia have seen a sharp increase in recent days

WHO press release.

So one half of one percent of the people in the world who have contracted this have died of it?? Geez, I bet we lose more people than that in traffic accidents every week!!

So you are willing to lose 0.5% of the people infected? What if the infection rate is up to 1% of world population? How about 5%? How about 10%?

It is relatively easy to prevent infection (wash your hand regularly), but this is called a pandemic for a reason.

I'm going to go with them freezing to death.

I'm not sure about that, could be. It's been relatively warm the last month or so when all these guys were found...1 had a gash on his head. The others I think they are waiting for toxicology results, if anything, probably alcohol/drug related.

It's starting to get fishy though...

It is. This swine flu is highly overrated, and should be ignored. Everyone knows this.
