Is there an auto save feature? Sims 2 caused my pc to reboot 2 days in a row after playing for 4 hours or so. I basically lost everything but my innitial save. I don't understand why it crashes either...

I haven't gotten a sim stuck yet. But I've only played 3-4 hours.

My only complaint is how "basic" it is in some ways. A lot less items/clothes than I'm used to from the Sims with all its expansions. You can tell they are holding out to force everyone to buy the exp packs. But it is a lot nicer overall.

I'm getting crashes too. I bought a pre-made house, but I hated the yellow siding on it. So when I use the build tool to remove the siding (and better) get some cash back for it, it crashes. Can't figure out why. I'm playing wiht 1 GB RAM and a 6800 NU GC. WTF?

I got Marilyn Manson Pimping a house full of Goth chicks... funny as hell..

also dont forgot you have to go to the store to buy more clothes etc for your sims to be able to change into..

I'm happy at least that I've never had it crash. Alcohol worked just fine with it; I have the newest version and there were no complaints. My computer is pretty clean - install is only a few weeks old, and I have kept it spyware free and the drivers up to date. So far so good! *crosses fingers and heads back into the Sims twisted lives*

The game has been working fairly well for me up until now. Now it runs slow when I am using the family I created - ultra speed and fast don't work so it is all one speed and is kind of choppy. When I switch to one of the premade families it works jsut fine even when I have a party over. Tried reinstalling but no help. Bah. Guess that will stop me from playing.

Would it be worth me buying the game? Or will it run like poo? I know what the minimum requirements are...I don't want to spend the $$$ if the game isn't going to run right.

It seems like a resource hog to me, so with the system that you have I wouldn't bother for now, or atleast until they come out with a patch to take care of the slow down problems that it sounds like a fair amount of people are having (including myself).

They're people trying to protect their work and invested time/money. Don't blame them. Blame the pirates who use these otherwise legitimate tools to steal software.

If software is what you want to call it. When I think of software, I think of applications that work on 98% of that machines they are designed to run on. Even Microsoft has a better track record than EA with this game (and I considered M$ one of the worst for buggy applications).

I entertained the thoguht of purchasing this game, but after viewing their forums / tech support area, I can find enough beta software / RCs to test for free without having to pay any money for. Don't want to start a flame war but it is horribly obvious that this is a beta program that you pay for, and their tech support forums are filled with 16 y/o girls trying to police the 'complainers' which comprise over 50% of the posts in the whole forum.

It doesn't matter what CD copy utils you have on your machine, this beta is not worth copying/pirating

What a joke.

Walls, that is sort of what I found out. After losing everything my sim created 4 times in a row, I've put Sims2 back on the bookshelf. I'll pull it out when I see a patch. Sure, I could just save more often, but this is one of those games where if you lose 10 minutes you could lose something that may never happen again. Everything is very 'chancy' and repeating stuff usually causes a seperate outcome. Plus the saving in and of itself is a pain.

Edit: Oh and despite the game supposedly having the ability to run minimized, when I alt-tabbed it caused my pc to reboot when you switched back to the sims.

Keep in mind, that unlike consoles, PC Game developers have to worry about a ton of different hardware / driver configurations to work properly with their games, which is why the PC game market in general has fallen off quite a bit. Also, just because you're reading about all the complaints from people with their games not working, doesnt mean that's a majority of the people playing Sims 2. In fact, I guarantee it's a very small minority. Why? Because people only complain when there's something wrong, not when everything is working fine...

I'm playing Sims 2, and have not had ANY issues with crashing, stuck sims, performance, or whatever.

Lastly, EA did not develop Sims 2.

I'm having all kinds of problems.

When I start the game, it ends up crashing and Windows ends up telling me that my DVD drive has been unsafely ejected from my system. I stopped all programs, disabled my AV software, still did the same thing. I had to get a "patch" just to load the game.

Even with my setup, I get a lot of slow-downs, freezes, and it crashed my whole system once.

Then I found out why I couldn't build anything, b'c of my using of the "patch." But if I don't use the patch, I cannot even play the game at all.

I foresee a post on the FS/FT topic, "Sims 2 DVD Edition for Sale."

Same here bud runs flawlessly on my PC super fast.. I can alt tab etc I run it at max detail at the max res availible with 8x AA and 16x AS on..

the problem is the typical fan of the Sims doesnt exactly have an uber cpu....
most are typical Dell/HP/Compaq type peeeps...
this is the main problem..
the Sims 2 is really using your hardware this time.... and alot of the peeps that are playing it need to upgrade thier systems. or clean up thier systems...

the ONLY bugs I have found in the Sims2 are still some pathing and getting stuck issues....
other than that great product...
if you are havign problems its Not Maxis/EAs fault try fixing your cpus and quite buying POS Dells =p

I say BS. Look at my system in my sig. That's no POS Dell. And there is nothing wrong with my system. I don't have problems playing any other games, i.e., Far Cry, Doom 3, etc., etc.

It's just poorly written software. Starting the Sims 2 normally causes Windows to lose my DVD drive, THAT"S poorly written software.

You are correct. My system sucks. It is too slow to run Sims 2.

When Windows tells me my DVD rom drive has been ejected from my system, I am just imagining it. It is
not real.

I should dump Windows 2000 and go with the less stable XP. When I see Windows 2000 under the Sims 2 Official minimum requirements, I should ignore it, it is really not there. I am just imagining it.

I'm running Windows 2000 and having problems also, bamacre. My system isn't a freakin dell either. Although, I'm not seeing your DVD issue. Mine just reboots my system after say... 4 hours. So maybe it is Windows 2000, but there isn't a chance in hell that I'm swapping out Windows 2000 for 1 freaking game. Especially since Windows 2000 and Windows XP are practically the same OS. It isn't like I get anything good for going to XP besides spending 100 dollars and getting an image viewer.

I wonder if any W2K users have ran the game for more than 10 hours straight. Any XP users run it for more than 10 hours straight? Just start it up before bed, pick a random family, and let them go while your pc is locked.

where the hell are you getting XP is less thable than that Piece of steaming sh1t that is windblows 2000?

I've been running XP since beta 2 and never had the problems or incompatibilities that I have had with 2000..
I support 2000 at work and its a horrible OS.. (thank god my CPU is XP)
give me XP any day of the week..
I have not had any of the nitemare problems peeps are having with SP2 either runs like a dream.. my system stays up 24/7 and it never ever crashes unless a program that is a POS does it...
used XP and XP home on 8 different home systems over the years and its a far better more stable gaming platform than anything else out there hands down...

maybe it helps that Im certified as a MCSA2003 having XP pro as my Client of choice... I know how to support my own box.

Why does it matter?

Minimum System Requirements for The Sims 2

If you have a T&L capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM then you need at least:
800 MHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98 or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
If you have a non-T&L capable video card (an Intel Extreme Graphics or a Radeon 7000/VE Series) then you need at least:
2.0 GHz processor or better
256 MB RAM if Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows 2000
At least 3.5 GB of hard drive space
Get the most current driver for your video card. The manufacturers usually have the video drivers on their sites for you to download. Visit the nVidia site, the ATI site or the support site for your computer's manufacturer for the latest drivers for those video cards.

Supported video cards (and the more video memory the better):

ATI RadeonTM series (7000 or better)
Radeon 7000/VE series (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
7200, 7500
8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
X300, X600, X800

Nvidia® QuadroTM series
Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

Nvidia® Geforce series (GeForce2 and better)
GeForce2
GeForce3, 3 Ti
GeForce4, 4Ti, MX 420, 440
GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
GeForce 6600, 6800

Intel® Extreme Graphics (non-T&L; requires 2.0 GHz processor)
82845, 82865, 82915

Don't apologize or sympathize with them because they can't live up to their own system requirements.

I dotn care what the box says.. ive had nothing but problems with 2000 since it was released the kind fo problems you are talking about riught here...
it was NEVER designed to run well with games...
it was designed as an office client OS with alot of security and networking in mind..
where XP was designed primarily as a home OS with lots of compatiblility for entertainment applications...

Drivers are optimized for XP where they are not any more for 2000..
2000 is a dieing OS only good thing about 2000 is 2000 Server... and server2003 is way better product than it is as well..

quit your freaking whining get a eval copy of XP and install it on a differnent partition and try it.. if its stable then its your beloved POS 2000...

Windows 2000pro runs every other game I have ever owned.

Just STFU about my OS. I am sure as hell not the only person here who uses a W2k box for gaming.
