I remember watching him as a kid. He is the reason I watch all types of auto racing today. I am very sad.

I'm no racing or NASCAR fan....but Dale Earnhardt was a true American legend...my condolences to his family and to the racing community.

I have been a true Earnhardt fan all my life, let our prayers be with all the Earnhardts, especially Teresa, Dale Jr., Nicole, and Kerry.

NSF4,
If anything. Chear for his kid. He has about the same talent as his father. If not better talent. This is the sadest day in racing or any other type of thing. It's like saying Kyle Petty dieing in a race. Legonds man..... They shouldn't die like this but they knew the risk when the get behind the wheel each time they get in that car.

SAD DAY IT IS........................

Um, BigAl - it seems obvious you only read about the first 10 posts or so or else you'd realize everyone knows that

I never really liked Dale much but I respected his abilities as a driver and as a NASCAR legend. RIP Dale

Peace be with you Dale. You were the reason I got interested in NASCAR back in 1985 and you've always been my favorite. Do a victory lap around Heaven with your Dad for us all.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I second the idea of retiring the #3.....I can't imagine anyone else racing that number, and I think that I would be at least mildly insulted if someone did.

damn, this flat out sucks.

Even if they didn't retire the #3, the ONLY person to use it should be his son

His son would never use it. Could you imagine the kind of trauma he's going through right now?

I agree w/NFS4. Jr. is the ONLY one who should ever use #3 again. Richard Childress should get a new number for his team if he wants to stay in racing. Don't do like Yates racing did keeping the #28 after Davey Allison died.

Still hard to accept Big E is gone.

The saddest day in NASCAR. He was the best driver ever at Daytona and he left doing what he was best at. That is what I'll always remember. Retire the #3, nope load one on the trailer, hire a driver and win another championship, Cause the #3 will always be Dale's.

I had to go through Neil Bonnett's death, Davey Allison and the rest of the Alabama gang. This is truly suck. I was horrified to hear the new. My thoughts are with his family. I know it will be hard for Dale Jr. to race now.

I checked out the crash footage from nascar.com and it's even worse than I previously thought again. The first couple of times I saw it, I was just glancing back at the TV and thought that the car was moving laterally into the wall with another car behind it. Now, it's pretty clear that the direction of impact was about 25 degrees off perpendicular and the car hit the wall (by itself with no car pushing it in). And it was the upper right corner that sustained the most impact. It was indeed pretty much a head-on impact (the camera angle doesn't do the actual crash justice).

I have to say that I'm a bit weary of the in-car footage of the crash that nascar.com has. I'm not a fan of censorship but I don't think they really needed to include that portion. I mean the in-car camera is totally obliterated so you can only imagine what the extent of Earnhardt's injuries were

In the early 70s I was always in the pits at Metrolina Speedway every Fri. night because my uncle ran there. I used to stand underfoot of Ralph Earnhardt as he was working on his car until Dale would run me off, then I'd go bug Chuck Piazza, Stick Elliot, or Freddy Smith.
I never imagined the day that Freddy, Chuck, and Stick would out live Dale.

Having said that, I must confess I've never liked Dale as a driver. But I would much rather had pulled against him for another 10 years as to have seen him die today.

I watched todays race with, to me, the greatest Earnhardt fan there ever has been! And when they hold the funeral I will personally put his Earnhardt tag on the front of my truck and drive him to it!

To Earnhardt fans I say, I'm sorry you've lost a family member. To the rest of the sports fans I say, We've lost another great race driver along with the Flicks, Savages, Sennas, Allisons, Moores, McDuffies, Kulwickis, Labontes, and to all those I can't name off the top of my head.

The only difference being that this one was truly a legend borne over the 22 years he raced the circuit.

The only thing that really bothers me about this is the fact that Dale was acting 100% out of character as far as his racing was concerned and I really feel that that is what cost him his life. Dammit Dale it just wasn't worth it!

My sympathys go to Teresa, Dale Jr., Kerry, Kelly, and Taylor Nicole.

I really don't know what to say. What does one say in a time like this? He drew me to the sport, he kept my fire alive, even through the 'tough' years, and I will continue to be a race fan until I die. He will be missed.

Well said CliffC!!

All fans of other types of racing and true fans of nascar, and even some who hate, dislike, spit on, make fun of Nascar or other forms of racing who know Dale Earnhardt are saddened by his death. Whether you liked him or hated him, the man was special and will be sorely missed by millions! I will miss Dale Earnhardt not being there on sunday afternoons making my face red after using that front bumper to make his way to the front, but he had a hunger to win and be the best at his job. I always had and still will have respect for him and what he meant to race fans everywhere.
To the few here that follow Nascar, you know that they try their DAMN BEST to make these car more safe year after year. To you who are not big fans, believe me and others when we say that it is safe. Not even 6 days ago Dale Sr. was on cnn talking about the safety of Nascar. He said, "We have to protect the fans, thats why there have to be walls", at one point in the interview. All drivers know the danger they take when they get behind the wheel. They have that stuck in the back of their minds, however safe they may feel inside a 190mph hotrod. Dale Earnhardt died doing what he loved to do, RACE. I only hope that when i punch the big clock in the sky, i'm doing something i love!
