In the early 70s I was always in the pits at Metrolina Speedway every Fri. night because my uncle ran there. I used to stand underfoot of Ralph Earnhardt as he was working on his car until Dale would run me off, then I'd go bug Chuck Piazza, Stick Elliot, or Freddy Smith.
I never imagined the day that Freddy, Chuck, and Stick would out live Dale.
Having said that, I must confess I've never liked Dale as a driver. But I would much rather had pulled against him for another 10 years as to have seen him die today.
I watched todays race with, to me, the greatest Earnhardt fan there ever has been! And when they hold the funeral I will personally put his Earnhardt tag on the front of my truck and drive him to it!
To Earnhardt fans I say, I'm sorry you've lost a family member. To the rest of the sports fans I say, We've lost another great race driver along with the Flicks, Savages, Sennas, Allisons, Moores, McDuffies, Kulwickis, Labontes, and to all those I can't name off the top of my head.
The only difference being that this one was truly a legend borne over the 22 years he raced the circuit.
The only thing that really bothers me about this is the fact that Dale was acting 100% out of character as far as his racing was concerned and I really feel that that is what cost him his life. Dammit Dale it just wasn't worth it!
My sympathys go to Teresa, Dale Jr., Kerry, Kelly, and Taylor Nicole.
