I was surprised as hell when I saw the people pop out of the moving boxes, that must have taken a ton of practice.

Pretty cool parade at the end. Costas came off as unbelievably smug (What was that line about how the first two female olympians for some country were the daughters of the prime minister? "I'm sure THAT'S a coincidence" Ugh.) but I don't understand the whining about their being honest about the medal chances of some of these countries. Iraq's probably not likely to win the gold in something, sorry to break it to you folks. Go watch the Special Olympics if the idea of competition bothers you.

I think NBC could shave an hour off by skipping some of the small countries instead of trying to come up with comments for them.

The Italians having to wait their turn in the parade had nothing to do with NBC. It takes time for 10,000+ athletes to walk the parade route.

I think it was great that every country was given attention. It's what the Olympics is about.

They went on for quite some time after NBC's broadcast ended. Makes me sad, looked amazing in HD.

Or they could have shown the performance segment in full instead of cutting off whatever part occurred during the commercials. The abbreviated intros they gave to countries when they came back from the commercials like you mentioned were good. They should have done that for most of the countries.

It's like they took the worst of both worlds, we get the shittiness of a delayed broadcast without the benefit of editing

Wow that opening ceremony was absolutely amazing! I don't thnk i"ll ever see anything that elaborate again. It almost brought a tear to my eyes a few times - especially when they were singing on top of the globe, and all the dancers at the bottom popped out all those children's faces.

I agree with the first part, Costas was quite smug and I remember that comment.

I of course like competition but how about leaving the door open for a possible underdog victory? It just makes it more interesting and keeps it positive IMHO

From reading the SA thread on it, it seems like the commentators in other countries (like Aus and GB) were also retarded. Lots of useless talk ("look at those colors durrr") or random political bashing. I think the broadcasts could have benefited immensely from more silence.

meh, I didn't watch it on tv, any site has something so I can watch the opening ceremony when I want to? Silverlight doesn't seem to work in mozilla for me and the nbc site seems to be jammed with 50 billion different things.

Someone put up the whole opening ceremony in full HD on torrent. It's 3.26gb. There's a non-HD version at around 1gb.

I had earlier installed a vista update for silverlight 1, then got the 2 beta from the nbc site. it works but i cant figure out how to configure it yet since its default is to auto-update and collect info.

i was watching badminton live, looked pretty nice, should come in handy for some events that aren't on tv
