Dilemma. I like the MR2 radio, seems to be pretty smooth with LTE/3G transitions. But its only working in a few roms right now, none of which are really de-Sensed.

I can roll back to Vanilla Bean or I can roll the dice completely and try the CM7 build. New builds seem to go up about every 2 weeks. The slow GPS lock mentioned in the known issues kinda puts me off though, when I need Navigation, I really[I/] need Navigation.

get a GPS lock on froyo sense rom before you flash CM7

Ok I got around to trying the GPS a little more. Seems with GPS on, i can only get it to work in google maps with google location services enabled. Thought with my Incredible if just gps was turned on it would work. Maybe I'm just trippin?

Also I get way better battery life by leaving 4G on all the time, wifi rapes my battery overnight. I get an excellent 4G signal everywhere I go though.

The GPS thing is odd. I usually just turn on the GPS and give it a few minutes to lock. MR2 locks much faster than the release radio, though still slower than my old Droid 1.

Not sure if its just me and the ROM I'm currently using, but I had to download a voice synthesizer package from Market to get more detailed Navigation instructions. Without it, I got 'Take the exit on the right in 2 miles' or 'In 1 mile, turn left.' With the sympathizer, I get the more normal, 'In 2 miles, take exit 7 for McClintock Drive'.

Also, the first nightly for OMFGB is out for the TB now. Still early in its development, very rough.

What is not working.

- Similar to CM's Thunderbolt build when it first came out, wifi doesn't want to connect to wpa networks. It sees it, and it says it will connect, but doesn't actually transfer any data.
- Camera/Camcorder is not working
- 3G data (confirmed on 402 radio) - I have no way to test 4g...need feedback.
- So far that is the extent of the testing I've done

What is working.
- Most everything else

The reboot issue is a problem with the MR1 radio, in the first OTA that was pushed out. Its been (mostly) resolved in the MR2 and 2.5 radios, but those are leaks and warranty voiding.

The rotation UI lag is called Sense. You can install LP or ADW and that'll get rid of most of it, but we won't get able to completely ditch Sense until the RIL is finished and the AOSP builds leave their current alpha states.

I think I'm going to have to root so that I can get Swype 3.0. Or should I just wait to see what gets pushed out in this update that's rumored for the 30th?

Haven't done this before, hope I don't screw it up.

If you follow the sticky in the dev forum at XDA, its pretty easy.

The update on the 30th is being called fake by a several devs, but its also being reported by Droid-Life, BGR, and AndroidandMe still. Meh, won't include nothing that's already out, with the possible exception of a good radio.

Just root it, get it a non-standard ROM and kernel.

Took me two evenings after work, and I have zero experience with Unix/Linux/etc. Damn easy to do.

Am very happy with the GPS in MR2 so far, enough so I killed my Sprint contract with the EVO... Looking forward to next radio/rom combo...

ah, yeah I can't root the device, its a work phone.

I mean I could, but if I brick it playing with it I'll be up shit creek with a 550 buck replacment bill

You can still install Launcher Pro or ADW. These will reduce the Sense-lag considerably.

Hi guys, I just bought a Thunderbolt and had a couple questions:

1) How do I root it (which online guide is most reputable)
2) What is rooting exactly
3) Will it erase my contacts that I have in the phone already?

1) Follow the guide at XDA
2) Rooting means gaining access to the phone's super user account.
3) If you've backed up your contacts to your Google account, now. If not, export them from the Contacts/People app first.

also, will the display look different after rooting? And are there any practical advantages to rooting?

The display will not look different after rooting. Rooting itself just gets your super user rights. Its what you can do with root that gets you the practice advantages. Performance and battery life increases, removal of pre-installed bloatware, custom kernels, ROMs, etc.

You should do some reading and research before you attempt to root your phone.

edit: Thanks, so I'll be able to delete the shit-ton of bloatware apps on the list that I'll never use?

Root access will allow you to side load applications, install custom software like rom and kernels. You can delete bloatware, freeze it with titanium backup, and do system backups with rom manager.

You can probably extend the life of your battery just by using a custom kernel and uninstalling a lot of bloat.

Is there a consensus 'best' kernal, and 'best' ROM right now? Sorry for asking so many questions, I literally know next to nothing about smart phones.

I like Imoseyon's minimalistic kernals. I run mine on extreme. My particular phone is also a lucky pick that can do 1.92X (1.92 Ghz at ultra low voltage) but performance scores tend to go down at that high of an overclock so I stick to 1.4Ghz.

Can't really go wrong with the ROMs out right now, but I am personally using the Das BAMF GingerRemix series. I also really liked the Lightning ROMs.
