Well, at least the tickets were free...

From what I saw, we played good for 90% of the game; it's just that we played like crap for 5 30 second intervals. We had chances, but just couldn't finish. There was one amazing play we had in the third, tic tac toe passing through all 5 guys, and a good chance, so it's coming... I just hope they don't wait until christmas to get it together this year.

Sakic scores pair, Avs dump Canucks

Canadian Press
11/1/2002

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Canucks were the perfect tonic for Colorado after the Avalanche blew leads in an overtime loss and tie against the upstart Minnesota Wild in their previous two games.

The Canucks are struggling at home and Joe Sakic quickly set the tone for Colorado's best effort of the season Thursday night by scoring on his first shot 32 seconds into a 5-1 NHL victory. He also added another in the third period.

?The other night we had a great first period in Minnesota (a 3-2 loss) and we let it slip but tonight we just kept plugging away,'' said Sakic who now has seven goals, four in his last two games.

?Obviously we caught them ... they're not very confident right now and getting a couple of early goals, we took their edge away.

?You want to get off to a quick start but I don't think we expected to get a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the game but that's just a bonus.''

Sakic's quick rising wrist shot from the slot blew past Vancouver starting netminder Dan Cloutier. His second goal on the backhand made it 5-1.

The Avalanche (4-1-3-2) have struggled at home like the Canucks but have four wins in five road games.

The Canucks, who wanted to focus on a fast start this season, are winless (0-4-2-0) in their last six games on home ice where they have failed to protect leads and now are below .500 at 3-4-4-0.

?We've got one more on the road (Saturday in Calgary) but we hope this will continue once we get back,'' said Sakic, a suburban Burnaby native who now has 48 career points against Vancouver, more than against any other club. ?We've played better on the road for no rhyme or reason.''

He also couldn't explain poor play at home - for either his club or the Canucks.

?I don't know why,'' said Sakic. ?You get cute and it just seems that when things aren't going well at home it's so much easier to play on the road.''

Dan Hinote, playing his first game after a broken leg suffered in Game 5 of last spring's Western Conference final, scored his first goal of the season while Adam Foote and Rob Blake connected from the point.

Bryan Allen, a rookie playing only his sixth game of the season, fired a screened backhand for his second goal of the season to ruin Patrick Roy's shutout bid.

Foote's wrist shot one second after a power-play ended chased Cloutier and Blake's blue-line blast greeted backup netminder Peter Skudra on Colorado's next power play.

Colorado coach Bob Hartley said his club played its best game of the season as Vancouver endured its most lopsided defeat of this campaign.

?We got off to a good start and kept building,'' said Hartley. ?This is our most complete game and it's going to give some confidence to our players.''

Canucks, Hurricanes swap four players

11/1/2002

VANCOUVER -- With only one win in their last eight games, the struggling Vancouver Canucks decided to shake up the roster today and traded Harold Druken and Jan Hlavac to the Carolina Hurricanes for Darren Langdon and Marek Malik.

Druken has 27 goals and 56 points in 117 career NHL games, all with the Canucks.

He was a scoring star in junior, with 123 goals and 243 points in 187 games with Detroit and Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League. The Canucks drafted him in the second round of the 1997 draft, and watched as Druken continued to put up points at the minor pro level.

But Druken had recently expressed dissatisfaction with his limited playing time on the Canucks. The 23-year old centre had two points in two games.

Hlavac, 26 had one goal and one assist this season. The left winger was drafted 28th overall by the New York Islanders in 1995.

Hlavac was part of the Eric Lindros deal when the Flyers shipped the Big E to the New York Rangers. Philadelphia later traded Hlavac to the Canucks for Donald Brashear.

Hlavac, 26, had one goal this season, but has the potential to do better. He had 28 goals for the Rangers in 2000-01.

Malik, 27, will certainly add size to the Canucks' defence - he's 6-foot-six and 235 pounds. He does not provide much offence, but was a big part of the Hurricanes success in last year's playoffs.

In 315 NHL games, Malik has 17 and 77 points and a +11 rating.

Langdon, 31, is the type of player the Canucks have lacked since trading Brashear. In 396 career games, he has 951 penalty minutes.

Canucks halt Wild unbeaten run

Sports Ticker
11/2/2002

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - It only took a little over a minute for the Vancouver Canucks to put away the Minnesota Wild.

Todd Bertuzzi scored the first of three goals in a 1:08 span of the first period as the Canucks beat the Wild 4-2 Saturday night.

Bertuzzi also had two assists as the Canucks handed the Wild just their second loss in 12 games (8-2-2) this season. The defeat ended a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) for Minnesota, which entered with the most points in the NHL (18).

Bertuzzi's power-play goal, his fifth goal of the season, tied the game just 1:20 after Marion Gaborik gave the Wild a 1-0 lead.

``We stuck to our game plan,'' Bertuzzi said. ``Instead of sitting around and not doing anything about it, we went right out and got one.''

Trevor Letowski and Ed Jovanovski also scored in the first period, and Markus Naslund added a third-period insurance goal for Vancouver. Gaborik and Cliff Ronning each had a goal and an assist for the Wild.

Gaborik opened the scoring with his seventh goal 8:04 in, and the game had the feel of another Wild victory.

``You have to be careful when a team gets (the first) goal,'' Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said. ``The line that takes over at that point needs to keep the pressure on and play in their end. It didn't work out that way.''

Instead, a brief stretch of sloppy play by Minnesota gave the Canucks control.

Bertuzzi was left alone in front during a Vancouver power play and converted a pass from Henrik Sedin for his fourth goal of the season at 9:24.

Just 27 seconds later, the Canucks had the lead. Murray Baron's shot from the left point went wide, but the put ricocheted off the back boards to the right post, and Letowski slid a shot behind Minnesota goalie Manny Fernandez for a 2-1 lead.

Then Jovanovski's slap shot from above the right circle got past Fernandez at 10:32, and the Wild suddenly looked more like the expansion team they were two years ago than the team that started this season so well.

``The first one was a good goal. The other two, I suspect Fernandez would like to have back,'' Vancouver coach Marc Crawford said.

But Minnesota settled down, and Gaborik set up Ronning for his third goal of the season at 15:33 to get the Wild within 3-2.

``You can either let it deflate you or you can play harder,'' Ronning said of the Canucks' three-goal burst. ``I think we played harder.''

Minnesota turned up the pressure in the second period, but Vancouver goalie Dan Cloutier kept the Canucks in front with a pair of stellar glove saves on point-blank opportunities by Ronning and Alexei Zholtok.

Naslund's goal, his sixth of the season, sealed the victory at 11:50 of the third.< Notes: Darren Langdon and Marek Malik, acquired Friday in a trade with Carolina, both saw action for the Canucks. ... The Wild claimed D Andrei Zyuzin off waivers from New Jersey. Zyuzin, 24, played in just one game for the Devils this season. ... Minnesota's successful run dates to last season. Since last March 1, the Wild are 15-10-4-4. ... Fernandez lost for the first time this season after six straight wins. ... Vancouver is unbeaten on the road this season (3-0-2). ... The Canucks' league-best penalty kill was perfect in six shorthanded situations.

Canucks sign free agent Lindgren

Canadian Press
11/4/2002

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver Canucks signed unrestricted free agent forward Mats Lindgren on Sunday.

Lindgren, 28, agreed to a tryout with Vancouver this summer, but arrived late to training camp after hurting his back lifting weights back home in Sweden.

He played two pre-season games with the Canucks, but agreed to give them a longer look by starting the regular season with Manitoba of the AHL. There he had one assist in four games before re-injuring his back and returning to Vancouver for treatment.

Lindgren has played 333 NHL games over the last eight years, recording 49 goals, 65 assists and 128 penalty minutes. Last season, Lindgren had three goals, 12 assists and 16 penalty minutes in 59 games with the New York Islanders.

He was selected 15th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the 1993 draft.

Canucks face red-hot Sakic

Sports Ticker
11/4/2002

DENVER (Ticker) -- Joe Sakic looks to continue his torrid scoring pace Monday night as the Colorado Avalanche host the Vancouver Canucks.

Sakic has scored two goals in each of the last three games and has and 12 points in his last seven contests.

On Saturday, Colorado squandered three one-goal leads and settled for a 4-4 tie at Calgary. The Avalanche have picked up at least one point in nine consecutive games.

Vancouver snapped a four-game winless skid (0-2-2) with a 4-2 win at Minnesota on Saturday. Todd Bertuzzi, Trevor Letowski and defenseman Ed Jovanovski scored in a 68-second span of the first period as the Canucks scored more than three goals for just the third time this season.

Bertuzzi also had two assists, giving him 10 points in his last nine games as the Canucks remained unbeaten on the road (3-0-2).

Colorado posted a 5-1 victory in Vancouver on Thursday as Sakic scored twice, giving the British Columbia native 17 career goals against the Canucks.

The Avalanche are 12-4-3 all time vs. the Canucks in Colorado.

Canucks storm past Avs

Associated Press
11/4/2002

DENVER (AP) - Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi each had a goal and two assists, and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 Monday night.

Vancouver remained unbeaten on the road this season (4-0-2), while Colorado stayed winless at home (0-2-3).

The Canucks' Dan Cloutier had 24 saves. Colorado's David Aebischer, subbing for Patrick Roy, out with an injured hip, stopped 17.

Vancouver led 2-1 at the end of the first period despite being outshot 12-7.

Colorado's Milan Hejduk got a power-play goal at 10:48, scoring from a tough angle left of the net. It was Hejduk's 17th career goal against Vancouver. He has no more than eight goals against any other opponent.

Vancouver's Trent Klatt tied it at 15:16, redirecting a shot by Trevor Linden.

Two minutes later, Vancouver had a 5-on-3 advantage after Martin Skoula and Serge Aubin went off simultaneously on interference and tripping penalties, respectively, at 17:16. Naslund capitalized, scoring his seventh goal of the season, a power play at 18:33.

Bertuzzi had the lone goal of the second period, his sixth. Naslund controlled the puck in the right corner and sent a pass to Bertuzzi, who beat Peter Forsberg to the puck and scored from just inside the right circle at 15:26.

Colorado's Derek Morris cut the deficit to 3-2 early in the third period. Morris, scoring his first goal in an Avalanche uniform after being acquired from Calgary in the Chris Drury deal on Oct. 1, shot from outside the right circle after teammate Steven Reinprecht won a faceoff.

Brendan Morrison made it 4-2, knocking in his own rebound after passes from Bertuzzi and Naslund at 6:25.

Notes: With Roy sidelined, the Avalanche recalled goaltender Phil Sauve from AHL Hershey. The club also assigned defenceman Jeff Paul to Hershey. ... It was Cloutier's 200th NHL game and Darren Langdon's 400th. ... Colorado's Joe Sakic was the NHL player of the week after scoring two goals in each of the past three games. ... Colorado beat the Canucks 5-1 in Vancouver on Thursday. ... It was the first of five straight home games for the Avalanche.
