NHL schedule drops puck in Tampa Bay

Canadian Press
7/14/2004

NEW YORK (CP) - The NHL released the 2004-05 schedule Wednesday despite the likelihood of a lockout wiping out some games or perhaps the entire season.

Should the NHL and NHL Players' Association resolve their differences and agree to a new collective bargaining agreement in September, then the NHL's 88th regular season will get under way as planned Oct. 13 when the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning raise their championship banner at the St. Pete Times Forum against the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.

Opening night would also feature Dominik Hasek and the Ottawa Senators hosting the Montreal Canadiens, the Western Conference champion Calgary Flames visiting the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and the Vancouver Canucks at the San Jose Sharks.

In other games of note, the Toronto Maple Leafs are slated to host the Boston Bruins on Nov. 6 in the annual Hall of Fame game, honouring 2004 inductees Ray Bourque, Larry Murphy, Paul Coffey and Cliff Fletcher. Bourque spent the majority of his all-star career in a Bruins uniform.

The Flames and Lightning will renew their Stanley Cup rivalry Nov. 11 in Tampa.

The NHL all-star game is slated for Feb. 13 at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

CBC's Hockey Day In Canada returns for another year Feb. 19 with Ottawa at Montreal in the afternoon contest followed by Edmonton at Toronto and Calgary at Vancouver.

The busiest date in NHL history is scheduled for March 26 when all 30 teams see action. Never before have 15 games been played on the same night.

Nice!

Nucks/Sharks to start it all off again this year.

Really really looking forward to hockey day in Canada again. I wonder if they'll do an outdoor game again? I hear they were trying to get each Canadian city to have one game in their football arena, but I'm not sure if it ever went through.

I hope it happens

But first they have to get a CBA done

NHL and NHLPA to resume talks July 21

Canadian Press
7/15/2004

TORONTO (CP) - The two sides in the NHL labour talks are heading back to the bargaining table next week in New York.

The NHL and NHL Players' Association haven't met since May 25 in Tampa during the Stanley Cup final.

``We remain hopeful that our meeting next Wednesday will result in progress being made toward a resolution,'' Bill Daly, the NHL's executive vice-president, said Thursday from New York.

``Either way, we believe it is now important to begin meeting more regularly because time is getting short, and the only way this can be resolved is if the parties continue to talk.''

The current collective bargaining agreement, twice been extended over the last 10 years, expires Sept. 15 - the day after the World Cup championship game in Toronto. If there is no resolution to collective bargaining talks by then, a lockout is expected.

Bob Goodenow, executive director of the NHLPA, and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will both be at next Wednesday's meeting. The key issue facing them is what the NHL likes to call ``cost certainty.''

The NHLPA refuses to buy into any system that either resembles a salary cap or guarantees a percentage of revenues to the league's owners.

``The NHLPA has approached all meetings with a view towards negotiating a fair agreement for both sides,'' NHLPA senior director Ted Saskin said Thursday in Toronto. ``To date, the NHL has been fixated on a cap and that will not allow us to make any progress.

``Hopefully the NHL will take a more flexible approach in our upcoming discussions.''

The solution to the impasse may only come if the league settles for a luxury tax system, something the union is willing to embrace.

Should that happen, the question will be at what figure does the payroll tax kick in? Should it be $40 million US, $45 million, $50 million, or more? It definitely has to have more bite to it than Major League Baseball's luxury tax, which last year only penalized clubs that had a payroll of more than $117 million. As a result, only the New York Yankees were taxed.

As it stands right now, the NHL wants a labour agreement that ensures costs won't overrun revenues. The union says the league's proposal, no matter how it is worded, amounts to a hard salary cap - which it has refused to accept.

The NHLPA says it has proposed a system that includes revenue sharing, a luxury tax, a one-time five per cent rollback in salaries and some changes to the entry-level system.

But the league wants a system that guarantees that costs ``bear a rational relationship'' to revenues.

According to the league's numbers, which the union doesn't buy, 75 per cent of total revenues in 2002-03 went to player costs, leaving only 25 per cent to pay for coaches, travel, building costs, marketing and advertising. That's not enough to make money, in the NHL's eyes.

NHL players step up for arbitration

TSN.ca Staff with files
7/15/2004

The midnight et/9pm pt deadline for Group II restricted free agents to file for salary arbitration is looming and a few NHL players have already decided to have next season's pay settled by a third party.

TSN's sister station in Quebec RDS reports that Montreal Canadiens forward Richard Zednik has decided to file for arbitration.

Zednik's agent David Schatia told the network that despite their decision, Zednik and the Canadiens will continue to discuss a new contract before a scheduled date with an arbitrator. Zednik, who signed a two-year, $3.5-million contract in 2002, finished last season with 26 goals and 50 points with the Canadiens.

Colorado Avalanche forward Alex Tanguay has also decided to file. The 24-year-old is coming off a career-best season with the Avalanche, scoring 25 goals and 79 points in just 69 games.

Meanwhile, The Team 1040 in Vancouver reports that Canucks centre Brendan Morrison and goaltender Dan Cloutier are also going to arbitration. It marks the second time Morrison and the Canucks are settling his salary through a third party.

Morrison won his hearing with the team in 2002, earning a two-year contract with Vancouver worth $2.15 million US for 2002-2003, and $2.45 million US in 2003-04. Cloutier signed a one-year contract with the Canucks last July that paid him $2.5 million US.
