Canucks' Nonis mum on cap idea

Canadian Press
9/16/2004

VANCOUVER (CP) - Although he believes the NHL needs a new system to operate, Vancouver Canuck general manager Dave Nonis wouldn't publicly endorse the idea of a salary cap Thursday.

``I'm not going to comment on what system I think is appropriate,'' Nonis told a news conference on the first day of the NHL lockout. ``The system that is going to be in place at the end of the day we're confidence is going to work.''

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has pounded the war drums saying the owners need cost certainty in the form of a salary cap if the league hopes to survive.

Bettman has rejected the players proposal for a luxury tax.

Nonis said if the NHL season were to begin today the Canucks would have a payroll of around $49 million US, which would put Vancouver among the top 15 teams in the 30-club league.

But Nonis refused to speculate on what a fair salary cap would be.

``I'm not going to comment on that,'' he said.

``We're going to be prepared for what ever system comes our way. We are confident it's going to be a system that will help the Vancouver Canucks be successful. Not just financially successful, but will help us be successful on the ice.''

Nonis did hint Vancouver would be prepared to trim its roster of some players if it meant lowering payroll to stay under some sort of cap.

``We went forward with the players we have,'' he said. ``We weren't about to let players go right now just to let them go. We'll see how things shake out going forward.''

Some owners have said they are willing to scrap the entire 2004-05 season in their fight with the players. Nonis said the Canucks are willing to wait as long as it takes to negotiate a deal with the union.

``I don't think you're talking about risking a season,'' said Nonis. ``You're talking about waiting so you have a deal that makes sense so we can complete long term and the people who do the best job are the people that end up with the Stanley Cup.

``I'm not predicting a time frame. Like everyone else we want it to be as short as possible. We're going to wait for the commissioner to provide us with an agreement that will help us and we'll be able to work with for a number of years going forward.''

The Canucks have made a profit of $45 million the past two years, but to do that ``we've had to fire on all cylinders to make money,'' said Nonis.

In the previous four years the team lost millions of dollars.

``We're proud we're able to have our team improve on the ice and off the ice,'' said Nonis. ``We're running out of time here. We need a new system in order for us to keep our team together and for us to be competitive long term.''

The Canuck office staff has gone to a four-day work week. All the staff, including coaches and management, have taken a 20-per-cent pay cut, Nonis said.

Brian Burke joins TSN hockey crew

TSN.ca Staff
9/27/2004

Former Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Brian Burke has joined TSN's NHL broadcast crew as an analyst for Classic games during NHL on TSN: Wednesday Night Hockey, as well as a regular contributor on SportsCentre. Exclusive to TSN, Burke appears on SportsCentre beginning Tuesday.

Burke made his TSN debut earlier this year as an analyst for the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

During the network's Classic NHL games on Wednesday nights, Burke will be in-studio alongside TSN's NHL broadcast team, featuring Pierre McGuire, Gord Miller, Bob McKenzie and James Duthie. On SportsCentre, Burke will discuss/analyse news from around the NHL, including the latest labour situation.

''I'm thrilled to be back with TSN. I had a great experience with their broadcast crew at the draft,'' said Burke. ''I'm looking forward to working with them again on a regular basis.''

''Brian is one of the most knowledgeable and well-connected people in the game today. He was a front-line negotiator in the last Collective Bargaining Agreement and is a great addition to our already stellar NHL broadcast team,'' said Mark Milliere, Executive Producer of News & NHL on TSN.

A Harvard Law School graduate, Burke's extensive NHL resume includes working with the Canucks on two separate occasions - as Assistant GM from 1987 to 1992, and as President and GM from 1998 to 2004. Burke also served as GM for the Hartford Whalers during the 1992/93 season, and worked in the NHL front office as NHL Senior Vice-President and Director of Operations from 1993 to 1998. The Sporting News named Burke the NHL's Executive of the Year after the 2000/01 season.

Avs' Moore still not skating yet

TSN.ca Staff
10/5/2004

Colorado Avalanche center Steve Moore is still bothered by post-concussion symptoms and is not healthy enough to begin skating.

"Steve can't skate yet," Moore's agent Larry Kelly tells the Denver Post. "He's continuing his rehabilitation, but he's just not there yet."

Kelly says Moore's neck fracture suffered in a March 8 game against the Vancouver Canucks when he was tackled from behind by Todd Bertuzzi appears to have healed. However, he is still experiencing dizziness whenever he attempts any kind of physical activity.

Bertuzzi, who is currently under suspension by the NHL, is scheduled to go to trial January 17 on assualt charges in Vancouver. Kelly says no decision has been made yet on whether or not to file civil charges against Bertuzzi.
