edit2: (okay, so I've lost the ability to think about more than one thing at a time...) this is EXTREMELY COOL. I asked joohang to stream CTV Sportsnet to me since I don't get the game on TV here. He got it working and I got to watch some good ol' Canadian hockey on Windows Media Player without those damn ESPN commentators. And the quality was decently good too!

Actually, it was right BESIDE the penalty box

Sakic aims for 500 as Avs invade Vancouver

Sports Ticker
12/11/2002

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Joe Sakic can become the 31st player in NHL history to score 500 goals when the Colorado Avalanche visit the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night.

Sakic, a native of Burnaby British Columbia, scored twice in Friday's 7-6 overtime win over the Montreal Canadiens. He can become the ninth active player to score his 500th goal and first of this season. Sakic, who is leading Western Conference forwards in All-Star voting, has six goals over his last 10 games.

Vancouver has dropped three of its last four games following a franchise-record 10-game winning streak.

Two days after allowing a hat trick to Minnesota's Marian Gaborik, the Canucks suffered a 2-1 loss to the Calgary Flames, who were without Jarome Iginla.

Vancouver has dropped consecutive games for the first time since October 14-16 and is trying to avoid three straight losses for the first time since March 7-10.

The Canucks and Avalanche have split this season's first two meetings. Sakic scored twice in a 5-1 win here on October 31 and Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi each had a goal and two assists for Vancouver in a 4-2 win at Colorado on November 4.

Sakic has scored 17 goals in 50 career games vs. Vancouver.

Maple Leafs pick up former Canuck Druken on waivers

TORONTO (CP) - Centre Harold Druken, who now can say he's been on three NHL teams in the last 41 days, will join the Toronto Maple Leafs for their game Thursday night in Philadelphia.

The Leafs picked Druken, 23, off waivers Wednesday from the Carolina Hurricanes, with whom he had one goal and two assists in 13 games. He'd been a healthy scratch in seven of the team's last nine games. Carolina acquired the St. John's native along with Jan Hlavac on Nov. 1 from Vancouver for Marek Malik and Darren Langdon. With the Canucks, Druken had one goal and one assist in three games.

To make room for Druken, whose 2002-2003 NHL salary is $715,000, Toronto placed veteran forward Shayne Corson on injured reserve. Corson will be out of the lineup for at least another 10 days due to a recurring groin problem.

GM-coach Pat Quinn drafted Druken 36th overall in 1997 when he was GM of the Canucks. They had high hopes for the six-foot, 205-pound skater when he scored 58 goals in 60 OHL games with the Plymouth Whalers in 1998-99.

Druken split 1999-2000 between Vancouver, scoring seven goals in 33 NHL games, and the AHL farm club.

In 55 NHL games in 2000-2001, he had 15 goals and 15 assists. On Dec. 8, 2000, he became the first Newfoundland-born player to score three goals in an NHL game.

He missed a majority of 2001-2002 recovering from an ankle injury, managing four goals and four assists in 27 games.

Sakic scores 500th career goal

Canadian Press
12/11/2002

VANCOUVER (CP) - Joe Sakic of the Colorado Avalanche scored the 500th goal of his NHL career Wednesday night in the city where he was born.

Sakic used a quick wrist shot under the crossbar to score on a power play at 4:25 of the second period in the Avalanche's game against the Vancouver Canucks. Family and friends were on hand to watch the game played at GM Place.

Sakic, 33, was raised in Burnaby, a suburb of Vancouver, where a street is named after him. He joins 30 other players who have scored 500 or more goals.

Sakic received a standing ovation from the crowd. The Colorado bench emptied to congratulate him as Sakic waved to the fans.

The five-foot-11 Sakic played his junior hockey with Swift Current of the Western Hockey League. He was the Quebec Nordiques' second choice, 15th overall, in the 1987 NHL draft.

The goals was his 17th in this, his 15th season.

Well that's good for the 'nucks but crappy for me. I spent over $300 on tickets in the past week, and saw two losses. Then they win when I'm in class and miss the entire game. Oh well...

Ick, that's gotta suck! I've been to 3 Canucks games in the past 3 years: 1) Nucks 9 Lightning 2 2) Flyers 4 Nucks 3(in OT) 3) Canucks vs Sharks, I think it was 5-3 Canucks(Home opener this season).

Oilers host Canucks in Western Showdown

Sports Ticker
12/14/2002

EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Two of the hottest teams in the NHL meet for the first time this season Saturday night as the Vancouver Cancuks visit the Edmonton Oilers.

Vancouver is in second place in the Northwest Division, one point ahead of the Oilers. The rivals are playing the first of three meetings in two weeks.

The Canucks have lost three of their last five games following a club-record 10-game winning streak. They have outscored foes 54-38 as the trio of Todd Bertuzzi, Brendan Morrison and Markus Naslund have combined for 26 goals.

Vancouver avoided its first three-game losing streak of the season with a 3-1 home win vs. Colorado on Wednesday. Goaltender Dan Cloutier made 26 saves for his NHL-leading 16th win and Morrison and Daniel Sedin scored on the power play.

Edmonton is 12-2-1 since a 6-1 loss at Boston on November 11 dropped them to 4-7-3-1.

The Oilers extended their winning streak to four games with Friday's 4-3 overtime win vs. the Colorado Avalanche.

Edmonton overcame three one-goal deficits as Jason Chimera scored the game-winner 3:21 into overtime after assisting on Georges Laraque's tying goal with 11:16 remaining in regulation.

Anson Carter and Mike York also tallied. Carter has collected five of his 14 goals in his last nine games, while York has six of his seven in his last nine.

Edmonton was 2-1-2 vs. Vancouver last season and 12-4-4-2 in the series since the start of the 1998-99 season.

Haha, dude, we were all wondering where the heck you were. I was gonna head down to GM Place to see if you were knocking on the door or something.

Had a good time nonetheless. I'm sure pics will be up soon. Oh, and we won! Great game up until when we totally blew it wide open.

I just wanted to say that I thought Bertuzzi made the best play of the game (not to take anything away from Naslund's 4 goals of course). Bert has been in the box a LOT lately for retaliation and frustration penalties, but when Salo punched him, he just took it. The 'nucks scored on the two ensuing powerplays to really control the game. Had he have retaliated it would have been a much different game.

Way to go guys.

Naslund pots four, Canucks rout Oilers

Canadian Press
12/15/2002

EDMONTON (CP) - Markus Naslund claims he's had better overall games in his career. It's doubtful any of them were as impressive or as memorable as his performance Saturday night, though.

Naslund scored four goals to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 6-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

The Vancouver captain scored his fourth of the game and NHL-best 20th of the season on a one-timer at 12:36 of the second period after taking a pass from defenceman Brent Sopel and blasting the puck past Tommy Salo.

?The goals came easy,'' Naslund said of his first four-goal performance in the NHL. ?If you give a goalie time - especially a good goalie - to set up, it's difficult to beat him so you want to try to shoot right away if you have an opening. I got some great feeds today, too.''

Todd Bertuzzi and Daniel Sedin also scored for Vancouver (18-8-4-0). Bertuzzi, Brendan Morrison, Mattias Ohlund and Ed Jovanovski each had two assists for the Canucks.

?He was definitely on tonight,'' Vancouver head coach Marc Crawford said of Naslund. ?We did good things getting the puck to him. It's great for Markus. He's a great scorer.''

Mike York, Ryan Smyth and Jason Chimera scored for the Oilers (16-10-4-1).

Naslund scored his third of the game at 5:59 of the second with the Canucks on a five-on-three power play. He also scored twice in the opening period, the first one coming just 22 seconds into the game.

His second goal made it 2-1 at 16:46 of the first.

?He was on fire tonight,'' Salo said. ?He's a good player and he showed up tonight.''

The win lifted the Canucks to the top of the Northwest Division with 40 points, one ahead of Minnesota and three ahead of Edmonton.

A competitive affair was expected between the two Canadian rivals as Edmonton entered the game having won 10 of its past 12 and Vancouver winning 13 of 15.

The game was a fast-paced and competitive until Vancouver blew it wide open in the second with four unanswered power-play goals in a span of six minutes 35 seconds.

Georges Laraque and Todd Marchant went to the penalty box nine seconds apart and Naslund scored his hat-trick goal eight seconds later.

Salo was given a roughing penalty for a confrontation with Bertuzzi on the scoring play, putting Edmonton down two men again. Bertuzzi then scored his 14th of the year and with Mike York still in the box serving Salo's penalty, Sedin scored Vancouver's third goal.

Bertuzzi suggested he did nothing to force Salo into a penalty.

?A frustrated goalie, I guess,'' the Vancouver forward said. ?When you get that many goals scored on you that early, you lose your focus and he did and we're lucky to capitalize on it for sure.''

Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish knew his team was off a bit to start the game but felt they rebounded after a sluggish beginning.

?Smytty gets the big goal to start the second period (to make it 2-2) and it's gonna be a great game, it's gonna be a hell of a night in here,'' he said.

MacTavish also wasn't upset his players decided to play a physical game.

?I'm not going to criticize our team for deviating from good defensive hockey to lay some licks out there,'' he said.

Vancouver finished 4-for-8 on the power play.

The last nine times the Canucks and Edmonton had played prior to Saturday, eight had ended in one-goal games or ties.

?We certainly want to put this game behind us,'' said Oilers forward Anson Carter. ?This isn't a game that's going to define our team, I don't think.'' Dan Cloutier stopped 23 shots to earn his league-high 17th win.

?You take those power-plays out of this game, it's a pretty tight game,'' said Cloutier.

Notes - The last Canuck to register a four-goal game was Martin Gelinas, back on Feb. 27, 1997. ... The last time Edmonton had an opposing player score four goals in a game was Nov. 9, 1996, when Wendel Clark did it for Toronto. ... Ethan Moreau made his return to the Oilers' lineup after missing two games with what the team said was the flu.

Oh, 2-1 Canucks at the end of the first btw... I am sooo tired I slept through the first period. Naslund got yet another goal, and Bertuzzi has the other. They're lighting it up.
