Don't forget guys... the Canucks of old would have lost that game for sure. At least the Canucks don't back down from a 2 goal
deficit (sp?) now. They did look bad for the first half of the game, but the definitely are more tenacious they have ever been.

Canucks open Wild road trip

Sports Ticker
1/16/2003

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Canucks open a four-game road trip against the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center, where they are trying to win for the third time this season.

The Canucks have won two of the first three meetings with the Wild this season, with both victories coming here. Todd Bertuzzi had a goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory on November 2 and Vancouver posted a 2-1 victory here 23 days later.

Minnesota won at Vancouver, 4-2, on December 7, but trails the Canucks by five points for the lead in the Northwest Division.

The Canucks have won four of their last six games and rebounded from consecutive losses a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

Trevor Letowski scored the decisive goal with 5:15 remaining as Vancouver rallied from a two-goal deficit.

Daniel Sedin and Sami Salo also scored for the Canucks, who avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season. With the victory, coach Marc Crawford tied Harry Neale's team record of 142 career wins.

The Wild have lost four of their last five games and fell to 1-3-0-0 on a six-game homestand with a 1-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

Dwayne Roloson made 26 saves for Minnesota, which has had its last six games decided by one goal.

Right wing Sergei Zholtok left the game in the second period with dizziness. He was taken to the hospital for tests and his status for Thursday's game is uncertain.

Canucks can't tame Wild

Sports Ticker
1/16/2003

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Marian Gaborik returned to form and the Minnesota Wild got back to winning.

Pascal Dupuis recorded the first two-goal game of his career and Gaborik ended his scoring slump with a goal and three assists to lead the Wild to a 5-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night.

Dupuis' second goal came with 8:33 left in the game after Trent Klatt pulled the Canucks to 3-2. Dupuis took a nice pass from Gaborik on a two-on-one break to beat Dan Cloutier, giving Minnesota a 4-2 lead.

Gaborik, who became the franchise's first-ever NHL all-star selection earlier in the day, ended his seven-game goal drought with an empty-net goal with 1:58 to play. Gaborik raced down the ice and fought off Brent Sopel to score his 24th of the season.

``It was a relief to get that goal,'' Gaborik said.

The Wild were relieved just to record a win. Minnesota came into the game with losses in four of its previous five games. The Wild improved to 2-3 on its current six-game homestand, which ends Saturday against Anaheim.

``It's nice to come back and play a game like this,'' said Wild coach Jacques Lemaire. ``It's great. I feel like we were playing like that a month ago, and it's nice to see it back.''

Dwayne Roloson had 28 saves for Minnesota. Cloutier finished with 19.

The game ended with a pileup in front of the Wild bench. Replays showed Jarkko Ruutu throwing an elbow at a Wild player along the board with 2.1 seconds left. Jeremy Stevenson and Jason Marshall retaliated for Minnesota and the officials penalized all three players.

``That's the type of player Ruutu is,'' Lemaire said. ``You don't give cheap shots.''

Gaborik's all-star teammates, Markus Naslund, Todd Bertuzzi and Ed Jovanovski had quiet nights for Vancouver, which has lost three of its last four.

``It was a terrible night,'' Bertuzzi said. ``We've got to have better starts than this.''

Richard Park and Stevenson also scored for the Wild, who gained two points on the Northwest Division rival Canucks. Vancouver leads the division with 57 points while the Wild entered the game tied for second place with Edmonton at 52.

``To win against a team like that is huge,'' Dupuis said. ``We're right behind them. Not right behind them, but we're kinda sliding behind them.''

Park got the Wild off to a fast start with his ninth goal of the season two minutes into the game. On a two-on-one break, Jim Dowd drew Cloutier out of the net and zipped the puck over to Park, who scored on a one-timer.

Dupuis added a power-play goal to make it 2-0. He poked in Gaborik's shot that bounced off Cloutier's pads with 3:34 left in the period.

The Canucks looked to be unravelling after being hit with a bench minor for too many men on the ice after Dupuis' goal. But they caught a break when Trevor Letowski beat Roloson with a short-handed goal with 1:46 left in the period.

The Wild went up 3-1 when Stevenson, planted in front of the net, scored his second goal of the season after taking a nice corner pass from rookie Pierre-Marc Bouchard at 4:08.

Klatt pulled the Canucks to 3-2 early in the third period. Klatt's low shot off the ice from the right circle slipped under Roloson's stick at 1:22.

``We have to stay with what we are doing,'' said Vancouver coach Marc Crawford. ``A few guys didn't seem to be at their best tonight.

``We have to get complete effort from all the guys to move in the right direction.''

Notes: Wild C Darby Hendrickson was activated before the game and returned to the lineup after missing the first half of the season with a broken arm. Hendrickson had a chance to score in the third period with a wide-open net but whiffed on the pass. ... Wild D Andrei Zyuzin was helped off the ice after a hard hit by Vancouver's Jarkko Ruutu in the second period. Zyuzin had cut on his head after his face was smashed between the boards. ... Wild D Filip Kuba was placed on injured reserve with a bruised foot before the game.

Canucks fight off Blackhawks

Associated Press
1/17/2003

CHICAGO (AP) - Vancouver defenceman Brent Sopel helped the Canucks on both ends of the ice.

Sopel scored the tiebreaking goal on a power play with 6:42 remaining and made two outstanding defensive plays to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night.

With the score tied 2-2, Sopel back-handed the puck into the net from a sharp angle after Mattias Ohlund's shot from the top of the slot sailed wide and caromed of the backboards.

``They kind of got caught and there was an opportunity for me to slide down on the play for a rebound and the puck came off the back boards,'' Sopel said. ``I was happy we could have a lead down the stretch because we haven't played well the last few games.''

Chicago goalie Jocelyn Thibault lost sight of the puck for a moment.

``I tried to look back and forth and I couldn't find the puck,'' Thibault said.

Early in the second period, Sopel made two saves on Chicago shots while Vancouver goalie Dan Cloutier was caught out of the net. Sopel made a stick save - on the goal-line - on Theo Fleury's shot at 2:30.

Seconds later, he blocked Kyle Calder's rebound with his midsection.

``Tonight, it was good to contribute in both ends,'' said Sopel, a minus-14 in his previous eight games. ``Obviously, this helps my confidence. It was killing me. Every time I turned around it seemed like the puck was going in the net.''

Murray Baron, Artem Chubarov and Markus Naslund also scored for the Canucks, who handed the Blackhawks their first regulation loss since Dec. 15.

With the win, Marc Crawford surpassed Harry Neale and became the winningest coach in franchise history with 143 victories.

``It's nice to be able to say I have the record,'' Crawford said. ``But it was just important to have a win tonight. We got contributions from a lot of other guys tonight. That's what we needed.''

Eric Daze and Sergei Berezin scored for Chicago, which had earned points in 14 straight games (7-0-4-3).

``It's too bad because we played hard and allowed a power-play goal at the end,'' Thibault said. ``It cost us the game.''

Baron added an empty-net goal with 52 seconds left to complete the scoring.

Vancouver's Dan Cloutier made 21 saves, while Thibault blocked 23 shots.

Daze opened the scoring with a power-play deflection 10:17 into the first. He redirected Phil Housley's low shot from the point past Cloutier from 15 feet out in the crease.

Chubarov tied it 1-1 with 47 seconds left in the first by converting a rebound of Trevor Letowski's shot from right wing. Thibault made a pad save on Letowski, but the puck deflected to Chubarov, who fired into an open net from the slot.

Naslund put Vancouver ahead 25 seconds into the third. He wristed a high shot past Thibault's glove side from the edge of the left circle after taking a cross-ice pass from Todd Bertuzzi.

Berezin, however, tied it 2-2 just 1:25 later. After he took a lead pass from Housley, Berezin slipped behind the Canucks defence and beat Cloutier with a low shot between the pads.

Notes: Chicago's leading scorer C Alex Zhamnov missed the game with a left hand injury and is day to day. He has a goal and 10 assists in his last seven games. ... Blackhawks D Jon Klemm returned after missing 12 games with a broken left index finger and left wrist injury. ... Vancouver improved to 14-6-2 on the road. ... Canucks D Ed Jovanovksi missed his ninth game because of a heel injury.
