LOL! True.

Well I'm Pro-Canadian Franchise, no matter its Vancouver, Edmonton, Ottawa or even Calgary(Come on Iginla you can feel the power!!).

Unfortunately, the NHL business in Canada is really shrinking. Ottawa recently filing for Bankruptcy Protection(and fortunately avoiding it with an investor), however in general, the Canadian franchises aren't doing so well other than the Leafs. Its a sad sight to see our(I'm canadian if you didn't notice by now) Canadian sport not being able to survive in our own country! Its being Americanized with huge salaries, and expenses that could not be matched with the difference in currency, attendance and ticket prices.

I still remember those days with the Winnipeg Jets. Now just a myth, and would hate to see it happen to more of our Canadian teams.

Canucks ready for Red Wings

The Sports Network
1/24/2003

(Sports Network) - Two of the best teams in the Western Conference square off for the second time in less than a week this evening when the Detroit Red Wings skate into GM Place to face off with the Vancouver Canucks.

Vancouver, which defeated Detroit for the second time this season on Sunday, enters Friday's clash on a losing note after falling 3-2 to the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

Todd Bertuzzi scored both goals for the Canucks, who had a two-game winning streak halted. Dan Cloutier turned away 22 shots in the setback.

Vancouver, which paces the Northwest Division with 61 points, has won four of its last five games on home ice, where it will be for the next four games.

The Red Wings also come into Friday's contest on a losing note following Wednesday's 4-3 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

Brett Hull scored his 699th career goal and added an assist for Detroit, which has lost two in a row and three of its last four (1-2-0-1). Igor Larionov and Kris Draper also found the back of the net for the Red Wings, while Curtis Joseph made 17 saves.

Hull needs one more goal to become the sixth member of the 700-club, joining Wayne Gretzky (894), Gordie Howe (801), Marcel Dionne (731), Phil Esposito (717) and Mike Gartner (708).

Nicklas Lidstrom set up Hull's goal and extended his point streak to five games.

Backup goaltender Manny Legace could find his way into the starting lineup tonight, as Joseph is 13-16-4 in his career against the Canucks. He has also struggled in recent games at GM Place and was pulled in the second period of a 4-1 loss there earlier this season.

On the injury front, defensemen Mathieu Dandenault (groin) and Chris Chelios (leg) did not skate in practice on Thursday and are questionable for tonight.

Detroit, which trails the St. Louis Blues by one point, will be playing the second installment of a four-game road trip tonight. Away from home this season the Red Wings 11-8-4-1m but they have dropped four of their last six on enemy ice.

Vancouver, which has outscored Detroit 8-2 in the two meetings this season, is just 3-16-4 in its last 23 matchups against the Red WIngs. The Canucks have also struggled with Detroit at home, where it is just 2-7-3 in the last 12 meetings.

Wings pull away from Canucks in third

Canadian Press
1/25/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - Nicklas Lidstrom, Darren McCarty and Tomas Holmstrom scored in the final 6:45 of the game to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night.

Lidstrom broke a 2-2 tie with 6:45 left in the third period. Henrik Zetterberg lifted a backhander at the net and the puck landed on the stick of Lidstrom, who swept it into the net.

Darren McCarty scored from in front just 1:17 later and Holmstrom clinched the win on a power play.

Sergei Fedorov had a goal, his 20th, and two assists For Detrooit (27-13-7-2). Defenceman Patrick Boileau recorded his first career NHL goal.

Manny Legace finished with 27 saves for the Red Wings, starting in place of Curtis Joseph, who has struggled against the Canucks over his career with a 13-16-4 record.

Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi scored for the Canucks (28-16-5-0). Brendan Morison had two assists and Dan Cloutier made 19 saves.

Brett Hull was stymied in his search for his 700th career goal.

Detroit moved ahead of the Canucks and St. Louis Blues into second place in the Western Conference.

The Canucks went 0-for-5 on the power play; Detroit 1-for-3.

Fedorov opened the scoring at 16:16 of the first period on Detroit's second shot of the game. Shanahan picked up the puck in the corner and fed it to the veteran centre, who got his stick under it and put it into the top of the net.

Fedorov then assisted on Boileau's goal, a wrist shot from the faceoff circle that gave the Red Wings a 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the second period.

The Canucks had three great chances shorthanded, but Legace came up with one big save after another and kept the rebounds to a minimum.

Naslund finally beat Legace with 18 seconds left in the second period. After a scramble behind the net, Brendan Morrison dug the puck out of the corner and fed it in front to Naslund, who put the puck over the goaltender.

The late goal seemed to spark the Canucks, who came out hard in the third and tied the game 1:37 into the period. Morrison picked the pocket of Kirk Maltby and gave the puck to Bertuzzi, who drove hard to the net and shoved the puck under Legace for his 27th.

Notes: During the game, the Canucks announced they'd traded North Vancouver, B.C., native Steve Kariya, who has been playing in Manitoba, to the New Jersey Devils for defenceman Mikko Jokela. Jokela will report to Manitoba....Detroit defenceman Chris Chelios (leg) did not suit up for the game....The Canucks have given up the first goal in 11 straight games....Fedorov has scored 20 or more goals in five consecutive seasons.

Well, ya got me beat seeing as how I was born in '81

I remember watching the 'nucks back in '86 though, and I vividly remember their series in '89 vs the Flames. The thing I remember most about that series is that Calgary got at least 4 goals by shooting the puck at McLean, and then crashing into him and pushing him into the net.

Oh, and it's 0-0 after the first btw. Almost no stoppages in play.

I too remember watching the 'Nucks since '86. A game being televised was a huge event since only a small handful of games were on the TV in those days.

It was ALL about HNIC in those days. It was a ritual at my house. Dinner was served at the 2nd intermission of the Leafs game, and we'd eat and watch the 3rd period. Then it was popcorn and coca cola for the 'nucks

Jovo skating but no return date set

Canadian Press
1/26/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - Ed Jovanovski's fractured heel has healed to the point where he's able to skate, but the Vancouver Canucks all-star defenceman hasn't set a date for his return to the NHL.

Jovanovski, who injured his left heel in a Dec. 28 game against Anaheim, skated for about 50 minutes Sunday morning.

``It felt good,'' said the 26-year-old, who was scheduled to be sidelined between four and six weeks.

``My body is fine and pain free. All the signs are in the right direction.''

The Windsor, Ont., native had a walking cast removed Wednesday and skated for the first time Saturday. He wasn't making any predictions when he'll return to the lineup.

``I'm not going to put a date on anything,'' he said. ``I feel good about it. We'll see where it leads. When the time is right I'll make that decision.''

Prior to his injury, Jovanovski was averaging just over 25 minutes a game of ice time. With four goals and 23 assists he still ranks fourth among the Canucks in scoring.

He also is among three Vancouver players, along with Markus Naslund and Todd Bertuzzi, named to the Western Conference all-star team.

Jovanovski, who owns a house in Boca Raton, Fla., plans to travel to nearby Sunrise for the Feb. 2 all-star game but isn't sure if he'll play.

``I'll go down and see what happens,'' he said.

``I know my own body and will make a decision.''

The injury limited Jovanovski's training and he admitted his conditioning has suffered.

``It was tough yesterday,'' he laughed.

``It's always tough coming back, especially with a foot injury when you can't ride the bike. Overall today was very good compared to yesterday.''

The Canucks were to host the Phoenix Coyotes Sunday night. In the previous 12 games without Jovanovski in the lineup, Vancouver was 6-6.

``It's been very tough watching,'' he admitted.

Jovanovski was picked first overall by Florida in the 1994 draft and helped the Panthers reach the Stanley Cup final in 1996.

He was traded to Vancouver on Jan. 17, 1999, in the deal that sent Pavel Bure to Florida.

A member of Canada's gold medal winning Olympic team, Jovanovski is in the final year of a contract that pays him $2.8 million US this season and he can become a restricted free agent July 1.

Yeah, I've forgone watching the 'nucks game. I watched the first period, but there's something about the radio that I love now

I was hoping for a Raiders win, but they definitely didn't deserve it, considering they only played for 5 minutes.
