Was that a lock or what? Naslund on a breakaway... might as well just have him turn around, bring it back to centre ice, and tally another one for the 'nucks

Naslund takes scoring lead in Canucks' win

Canadian Press
2/7/2003

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Martin Biron learned firsthand what a dynamic goal scorer Markus Naslund has become.

Naslund scored his NHL-leading 36th goal and added an assist as the Vancouver Canucks beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 Friday night. Naslund deked several times and then put a backhand shot on a breakaway past Biron to make it 2-0 in the first period after Trevor Linden stole the puck from James Patrick.

"On his breakaway, he made two pretty moves," Biron said. "Most guys in this league will make two or three moves and the puck goes in the corner."

Naslund moved ahead of Mario Lemieux for the league lead with 70 points, but he felt fortunate to score on his breakaway.

"I tried to get Biron to slide either way and give me a little opening and he almost saved it," Naslund said.

With an assist for his 62nd point, Todd Bertuzzi extended his point streak to 10 games - the longest current run in the league. The line of Bertuzzi, Naslund and Brendan Morrison finished with four points.

"That is probably the best line I've seen all year," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said. "We gave them opportunities to win the game and they did."

Daniel Sedin, Artem Chubarov and Morrison - with his first goal in 18 games - also scored for the Canucks, unbeaten in their last five (2-0-3).

Morrison felt especially relieved 10:22 into the game when he took a pass from Naslund on a two-on-one and fired it past Biron to make it 1-0.

"A big sigh of relief," Morrison said. "I thought they were going to bring a stretcher out to carry off the gorilla that fell off my back. It was bound to happen sometime. It had gone on long enough."

Ales Kotalik got his 14th goal of the season and Dmitri Kalinin also scored for the Sabres, who have lost five straight after a 7-1-2 start to January.

Dan Cloutier - appearing in his 44th game of the season - stopped 34 shots for the Canucks.

Naslund has a goal in 27 of Vancouver's 55 games, and the Canucks are 19-5-3 when he scores.

Trailing 3-0 and on the power play, Kalinin fired a shot from the top of the left circle past Cloutier 3:10 into the second.

Sedin made it 4-1 when he redirected Linden's shot past Biron 2:34 later.

Linden and Buffalo's Tim Connolly each had two assists. Biron made 26 saves.

Buffalo peppered Cloutier with 16 shots in the second period, while Vancouver had 12 shots.

The Canucks' 17 road wins lead the league. They finished their three-game road trip 2-0-1.

"The systems are stepped back a little bit," Bertuzzi said. "When you're on the road you don't have to put on a show. Even though some people don't want to say it, I think at home you try to do that, you try to be a little cuter and it doesn't work."

Notes: The Sabres offered Canadian money at par and had only their third sellout of the season. The other two were against Toronto. ... Sabres D Rhett Warrener returned after missing 10 games with a broken bone in his left foot and was ejected for being the third man in a second-period fight. Sabres F Chris Gratton also returned after missing two games with a mild concussion. ... The Sabres have not led in two straight games for the first time since Dec. 30-31.

Canucks host fading Hawks

Sports Ticker
2/10/2003

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The Vancouver Canucks can stretch their unbeaten streak to seven games on Monday night when they host the fading Chicago Blackhawks.

Vancouver has three wins and three ties in its last six games and has not lost since a 5-2 defeat to Detroit on January 24. All-Star Markus Naslund had a goal and an assist as the Canucks posted a 4-2 victory over Buffalo on Friday.

Naslund continued his sizzling scoring pace as Vancouver concluded a successful three-game road trip. The Swede has 70 points, which is three behind Pittsburgh superstar Mario Lemieux for the NHL lead. Naslund has five goals and seven assists in his last nine games.

This is the fourth and final meeting between the teams and Vancouver has won two of the first three. The Canucks won the last matchup on January 17 as Naslund had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory.

Naslund had two goals and an assist in Vancouver's 5-3 victory over Chicago on November 20. Eric Daze scored and assisted and Eric Daze had a power-play goal for the Blackhawks.

Kyle Calder's power-play goal just before time expired lifted Chicago to an exciting 3-2 victory over Vancouver on December 17.

Chicago is two points behind Anaheim for eight place in the Western Conference. The Blackhawks have 25 games remaining.

The Blackhawks are just 4-6-4-3 in their last 17 games and are concluding a seven-game road trip in which they are 2-3-1-0. Jocelyn Thibault made 29 saves and Sergei Berezin capped a three-goal outburst in the third period in Saturday's 3-0 victory at Edmonton.

Thibault notched his career-high and league-leading seventh shutout of the season and Berezin scored his 16th goal. Steve Thomas and Tyler Arnason also scored for the Blackhawks.

Naslund scores winner for Canucks

Canadian Press

2/11/2003

VANCOUVER (CP) - Markus Naslund scored his league-leading 37th goal of the season and Dan Cloutier made 23 saves as the Vancouver Canucks extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with a 2-1 win Monday night over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Todd Bertuzzi assisted on Naslund's goal to extend his points streak to 11 games. Trent Klatt also scored and Darren Langdon picked up his first point of the season with an assist.

Cloutier came within 41.5 seconds of his first shutout since blanking the Calgary Flames 3-0 on opening day.

The Canucks (32-16-8-0) are 4-0-3 in their last seven.

Mark Bell scored Chicago's lone goal and Jocelyn Thibault stopped 29 shots. The Blackhawks (23-20-10-3) finished a seven-game road trip with a 2-4-1-0 record.

Chicago was 0-for-2 with the man advantage; Vancouver 0-for-1.

The Canucks outshot the Blackhawks 16-4 in the second period and took a 1-0 lead on Klatt's goal. Mats Lindgren picked the puck out of a scramble in front of the net, drew Thibault to the left side and then backhanded a pass across the crease to Klatt for his 11th at 15:20.

Vancouver made it 2-0 just 1:40 into the third when Bertuzzi carred the puck over the blue-line and fed a short pass to Naslund, whose rising wrist shot caught the top left corner.

The goal was Vancouver's first third-period goal in seven games.

With the goalie out for the extra skater, the Blackhawks broke the shutout when Tyler Arnason took a long shot the bounced off Cloutier and Bell put a backhander past the goalie.

Notes: This was the fourth and final meeting between Chicago and Vancouver this season. The Canucks were 3-1-0....With the opening of three new suites, Vancouver's maximum attendance has increased to 18,514. Monday's game marked the 21st straight sellout....Vancouver is 5-2-2-0 this season in their first home game after a road trip.
