Second line
New-look Sedin twins living up to old hype

Things are looking up for Daniel and Henrik Sedin, now in their third season with the Canucks. (Files)

Kevin Woodley
For myBC.com
VANCOUVER ? If there was one upside to Daniel Sedin?s back surgery before last season, it was that reporters could finally tell him apart from identical twin Henrik. Daniel was slower, weaker and more hesitant on the ice, and the one who looked more like a beer leaguer than a National Hockey Leaguer off it.

After a full summer of training, however, that?s no longer the case, which is bad news for media and good news for the Vancouver Canucks.

"If you look at their faces right now, they don?t look quite as baby faced as they did," said coach Marc Crawford. "Their training has made it now so they?re much more fine and defined in their appearance and it shows not only in their body sculpture but also in their facial features. They look now more like young men as opposed to young boys."

The difference is especially noticeable in Daniel, who ran six times a week to drop the extra weight he?d put on last season ? trading in a rounded face and soft edges for some of the definition you?d expect from a third-year professional athlete.

"Last year I was maybe 75 per cent," said Daniel, adding he expects to return to the 20-goal form of his rookie year and easily eclipse last year?s disappointing nine-goal total. "I know I?m capable of it, but last year in the beginning I was ? I don?t want to say scared ? but I was cautious and it was tough. This year I don?t care. It (back) doesn?t bother me and I don?t feel any pain."

After being forced into something of a couch-potato mode by the injury last summer, Daniel was happy he could finally put in the extra gym hours necessary to catch his brother this year. He even came back to North America almost a full month early ? a real rarity among Swedes ? to attend power skating sessions in Winnipeg.

So far the on-ice results, while not spectacular, are promising for Canucks fans still holding the just-turned-22 twins to the expectations that come with being the second and third draft picks in 1999.

"It?s our third year now and we feel more or less belong &$151; in the dressing room and everything and on the ice too," said Henrik, who has five assists through seven games and at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds can now match up defensively against other big centres. "We knew we were a couple of steps behind when we came over our first year and we?ve progressed and taken a step to get stronger every summer so hopefully we can have a breakout year."

It might not be breakout material yet, but Daniel also has five points already (a goal and four assists) and they?re both plus-3.

More importantly, the twins are combining on close to a goal a game, making them the new No.2 line and providing at least a little security on nights when the top unit of Markus Naslund, Brendan Morrison and Todd Bertuzzi is shut down by tight checking. The Sedins patented brother-to-brother cycle is emerging from behind the net a little more often and the fact defenders can no longer slow them down away from the puck has allowed them to create more scoring chances.

"We?re a cycling line and if the other guys can?t hold us with their stick and put their sticks between our legs and grab us all the time, I think that benefits us," said Henrik, who had 16 goals and 20 assists last year.

Those aren't bad numbers for a second year player known more for passing than shooting, especially one who was playing fewer minutes and couldn?t rely on his brother as a go-to winger most of the year. But Henrik, who also hit the gym harder this summer, knows there is more work to do.

"You?ve still got to work hard to get to the net and get to open spots," he said. "Back in Sweden we could cycle the puck in the corner for like 45 seconds and when the other team got tired we would take it to the net and score. You can?t do that over here and that?s something we?ve got to try to do different, get the puck to the net more."

Having gritty winger Trent Klatt back as a fairly regular linemate also helps the twins accomplish that task.

"We play a lot of the same type of game," said Klatt, who already has three goals and an assist and appears to have recovered fully from the abdominal muscle tear that forced him to miss all but 34 games last season. "They like the puck in the corner and like to cycle and I have a better feel for the game when I have someone on me, I can protect it better. We just really respond well to each other."

Canucks celebrate Linden's longevity

Canadian Press
10/23/2002

VANCOUVER (CP) - When he first broke into the NHL as a skinny 18-year-old who had trouble growing a beard, Trevor Linden thought anyone in the league over 30 was a senior citizen.

``I thought the guys who were 32 were 100 years old,'' the 32-year-old Vancouver Canuck centre, who now wears a neatly trimmed goatee, joked Wednesday.

``You come in and want to make your way and prove you can play. Suddenly you're in your fifth or sixth season. Then you are at 10 years, then it's 1,000 games and you're asking yourself where the time has gone.''

It wasn't surprising that when Linden played his 1,000th NHL game last March 26th he didn't want a fuss made. The Canucks were fighting for a playoff spot and he didn't want a personal achievement to become a team distraction.

The Canucks will celebrate Linden's milestone prior to Thursday night's game against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. His family will be on hand for a pre-game ceremony that will include gifts from the team and league. Video tributes will be shown during breaks in the game.

Typically, Linden would rather go in the corner with Eric Lindros than receive accolades.

``I'm not one big on attention,'' said the 15-year-veteran.

``Last spring, given the situation, to interrupt that with a personal achievement was not the appropriate time. They nailed me this year. It's going to be fun. I just hope they make it short and sweet and get on with the game.''

Linden's status for the game is questionable. He's still recovering from a knee injury suffered in the season-opening game Oct. 10 against Calgary.

``There's some things that are still iffy,'' said Linden, who been skating with the club.

``We'll see.''

If Linden does dress against the Ducks it will be his 1,010th regular-season NHL game and 767th as a Canuck. Taken second overall in the 1988 draft, the Medicine Hat, Alta., native has 316 goals and 421 assists for 737 points.

As a Canuck, Linden has 259 goals and 344 assists for 602 points. He's second in team scoring, goals and assists and third in games played.

Asked to recall his favourite memories, the former Canuck captain talked about his rookie season in Vancouver; the 1994 playoffs when the Canucks lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final to the Rangers; and his first game back in Vancouver after being traded to the New York Islanders in 1998.

``When you've spent the better part of 11 years here, there are a lot of good memories,'' said Linden, voted one of the top 30 Canucks of all time.

``It's pretty special for me to be able to come back and play my 1,000th game in a Vancouver uniform and be able to celebrate it with the people.''

One of the most popular Canucks off the ice, Linden is involved in several charities, including the Trevor Linden Foundation which helps raise money for children.

Linden's popularity was like a red flag to Mike Keenan during his stint as Vancouver coach. Keenan decided to make an example and traded him to the Islanders in 1998.

``It was a difficult situation for the organization, for me, for a lot of people involved,'' Linden said.

``Difficult times and trying times makes the good times that much better.''

After stints with Montreal and Washington, Linden was traded back to Vancouver early last season.

Linden's job with the team has changed. Instead of being a goal scorer, he's now used on penalty killing, protecting leads and to win faceoffs. One of his roles this season is to play on a line with Fedor Fedorov and tutor the rookie.

His biggest contribution may be in the dressing room.

``He brings leadership,'' said captain Markus Naslund.

``It took a lot of pressure of my shoulders. He's help me a lot.''

At a time when many sports stars can be self-centred and arrogant, Linden stills seems to be thrilled that he's getting paid to play a game.

``I wouldn't change anything,'' he said.

``I appreciate the good times and you learn from (the bad) and become stronger.''

Among Thursday night's festivities will be the handing out of Trevor Linden bobblehead dolls.

``I've seen it,'' Linden said.

``Its nose is a little too straight. Frankly, it doesn't look much like me.''

Way to go Trevor

Canucks look to roast Ducks

The Sports Network
10/24/2002

(Sports Network) - The Vancouver Canucks try to stretch their unbeaten streak to four games tonight when they welcome the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to GM Place.

The Canucks are 1-0-2 in their last three games, including Monday's 5-2 win over San Jose at the Shark Tank. Head coach Marc Crawford reunited the team's top line of Markus Naslund, Todd Bertuzzi and Brendan Morrison, and the trio paced a five-goal outburst during a 6:43 span in the second period.

The line combined for four goals and three assists, including Naslund's eighth career hat trick. Morrison also scored, as did Trent Klatt, and defenseman Ed Jovanovski added a pair of assists.

High-powered Vancouver, which led the league in goal-scoring a season ago, appears to be on its way to another explosive season, as its 22 goals are tied with Dallas for fourth in the National Hockey League. Naslund's five markers tie him for fourth amongst the league's top goal-scorers. Veteran forward Trevor Linden is expected to return tonight and will be honoured for playing in his 1000th career game

The Canucks open a four-game homestand tonight and will host Dallas on Saturday. Buffalo and Colorado also visit during the set.

Anaheim, meanwhile, snapped a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) with a 3-2 overtime victory over Colorado on Sunday in the final installment of a four- game homestand. Andy McDonald scored the game-winner 4:49 into overtime, and rookie Martin Gerber stopped 22 shots in his first-ever NHL start. Stanislav Chistov and Petr Sykora also tallied for the Ducks, who begin a five-game road trek tonight.

With two goals and three assists in the young season, Chistov shares the NHL's rookie scoring lead with Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg and Carolina's Jaroslav Svoboda.

Anaheim resumes its current trek on Saturday in Edmonton and will also stop in Toronto, Montreal and Boston.

These teams skated to a 2-2 tie at the Pond last Friday, as Anaheim's Paul Kariya and Vancouver's Bertuzzi netted two goals apiece. The Canucks are 3-0-1 in the last four meetings, and the Ducks are 0-5-1 in their last six trips to Vancouver, dating back to February 20, 1999.

Kariya sours Linden's day

Canadian Press
10/25/2002

VANCOUVER (CP) - It's early in Martin Gerber's NHL career but the 28-year-old rookie is staking a claim to the No. 1 netminding job for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Gerber turned in a solid performance for the second straight game Thursday night with a 30-save effort as the Ducks and Vancouver tied 2-2 on a night that honoured Canucks Trevor Linden's 1,000th NHL game.

``It's just two games,'' said Gerber, who earned his first victory Sunday night with a 30-save performance in a 3-2 win over Colorado _ also in overtime. ``It's not a big thing. There's a lot more work to do.''

Gerber's still learning the tendencies of NHL shooters after the Ducks signed him out of Farjestad where he led the Swedish Elite League last season with a 1.96 goals-against average and took his club to the title.

``It didn't come easy,'' said Gerber, a native of Burgdorf, Switzerland, who was selected 232nd overall in the 2001 entry draft.

``It's fun to play. You have to learn a lot. It will come in time.''

Gerber didn't have any overtime saves to make in Colorado but had to face down a Canucks power play and Brent Sopel's point-blank slapshot from the slot in the extra period Thursday.

``I just had to take as much of the net away as I could,'' he said. ``If the timing is right, I have a pretty good chance to stop it.''

Special teams play prevented the Canucks from getting a win instead of their second consecutive 2-2 tie with Anaheim.

Andy McDonaled enabled the Ducks to go 1-for-4 with the man advantage. Paul Kariya scored the tying goal shorthanded as the Canucks' power play fizzled (0-for-9).

Brendan Morrison and Jan Hlavac gave Vancouver 1-0 and 2-1 leads.

Kariya, who has three of his four goals against Vancouver this season, took Steve Rucchin's pass and beat netminder Dan Cloutier with a backhander between the goalie's glove and the post.

``That's all I had,'' said Kariya. ``I was lucky I put the shot where I got it. Practice makes perfect, I guess.

``It's one of those shots where you're either going to make it or you're going to miss the net. It's that close.''

Kariya also appreciated the work of Gerber, who also played for Switzerland in the 2002 Olympic tournament.

``He's technically really sound,'' said Kariya. ``He takes the bottom of the net away really well.

``He's in tremendous shape and he's used to playing in big games. He's really come in and done a great job for us.''

While the Ducks might have found a goalie, they lost veteran centre Adam Oates, who broke his left hand in two places after he was slashed. Oates is out indefinitely.

``I just went to the net on (McDonald's) goal,'' said Oates, who was acquired in the off-season to replace Teemu Selanne on Kariya's line. ``I think I got slashed.

``I broke it in two spots and I'll go home and see the doctor (Friday). I didn't feel anything until I went off. I took my glove off and my (little) finger was all twisted.''

Winger Todd Bertuzzi, who extended his points streak to five games with an assist on Morrison's goal, said the Canucks just couldn't solve Gerber.

``Take a look at how many chances we had,'' said Bertuzzi whose club outshot Anaheim 32-17.<

``We just ran into a hot goaltender tonight. A lot of point-blank chances. There's nothing you can do when a goalie comes up big like that. You see an individual performance like that once in a blue moon.''

Morrison said the Canucks missed too many chances and didn't take advantage of their power-play chances.

``We've just got to learn to bury teams,'' Morrison said. ``Personally, I wasn't good at draw taking so when we did get set up we were getting shots.''

Notes: In addition to video tributes, Linden was presented with a sport utility vehicle, the first sweater he wore as a Canuck rookie in 1988, jewelry and airline tickets....The Canucks also introduced a Linden bobblehead doll....Linden actually played his 1,000th game March 26th when the Canucks blanked Los Angeles 4-0 but asked any ceremonies be delayed so they wouldn't be a distraction in Vancouver's successful playoff drive....Fedor Fedorov was assigned to the AHL Manitoba Moose to make roster room for Linden....The Canucks also announced the signing of tough forward John Craighead, 30, who played the last four seasons in Germany.

Stars head to GM Place to face Canucks

The Sports Network
10/26/2002

(Sports Network) - The Dallas Stars resume their Western Canadian road trip tonight when they visit the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place.

Dallas began the trek with a 3-3 tie in Calgary on Thursday night, thus extending its unbeaten streak to two games (1-0-1). The Stars defeated Washington, 5-2, on Sunday.

Against the Flames, Jere Lehtinen scored with 2:49 left in regulation to knot the tilt and force overtime, after both the Stars and Flames coughed up third- period leads. Dallas held a 2-1 edge after Mike Modano tallied late in the second, but the Flames' Chris Clark and Craig Conroy each scored during a 1:53 span of the final frame.

Rob DiMaio, who paced Sunday's victory over Washington with a pair of tallies, also scored for the Stars, and is now tied with Bill Guerin for the team lead at four.

Goaltender Ron Tugnutt, to some surprise, made his second consecutive start between the pipes after the veteran was instrumental in the Stars' win over Washington on Sunday. Tugnutt, who highlighted the strong showing with a glove stop on a labeled slapper by rookie Jordan Leopold late in the third, finished with 39 saves.

Dallas, 1-2-2 away from home, caps off its Western trip Monday in Edmonton.

Vancouver, meanwhile, is unbeaten in four straight (1-0-3) after opening a four-game homestand with a 2-2 tie against Anaheim on Thursday. Brendan Morrison and Jan Hlavac scored for the Canucks, but the Ducks' Paul Kariya converted a shorthanded chance for the equalizer 8:28 into the third period.

Vancouver squandered its share of opportunities by firing at an 0-for-9 clip on the power-play. For the season, the Canucks are 5-for-45 with the man- advantage.

Goaltender Dan Cloutier made 15 saves in Thursday's contest, and moved to 3-2-2. He has a 2.38 goals-against average and .904 save-percentage in seven starts.

The Canucks continue their current set on Tuesday against Buffalo, before wrapping things up two nights later versus Colorado.

Dallas and Vancouver split four games last season, with each team winning twice in the other's rink. The clubs are 5-5-1 in the last 11 clashes overall.

This is going to be a real tough game for the Canucks........ Dallas has come out strong this year and they seem to be scoring quite well. With Turco playing so well (who won't with that team) the Canucks have to capitalize on the powerplay........... 0 for 9 is not going to do it.

At least it's on HNIC
