Now Columbus needs to beat the Avs, Canucks beat the Sharks, Oilers beat the Canucks, and Avs beat Nashville(who need to lose to Chicago and St Loius). If all that happens, Canucks win Division and Oilers squeak through to the Playoffs. Simple enough.

Canucks take over first place in division

Associated Press
4/1/2004

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Brendan Morrison set up the tying goal by Markus Naslund and the winner by Sami Salo with 21 seconds left, as the Vancouver Canucks took over first place in the Northwest Division by beating the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 2-1 Wednesday night.

Vancouver's fourth straight victory gave them 41 wins and 97 points, tying Colorado's total. The Canucks have won two more games than the Avalanche, with each team having two remaining.

Ruslan Salei scored for the Mighty Ducks, and Martin Gerber made 41 saves but Anaheim lost its fourth straight.

The Ducks, who lead the NHL in faceoff percentage, lost on a faceoff deep in their end. Morrison won the draw cleanly from Sergei Fedorov, and Salo beat Gerber on a long wrist shot. The Canucks outshot Anaheim 22-4 in the third period.

Playing at home for the first time since tying a club record with eight goals on March 21 against Detroit, the Ducks had to wait almost 10 minutes before getting their first shot.

They equalled a season low with just two shots in the first period, but took 17 in the second and opened the scoring at 2:38 with Salei's fourth goal. Joffrey Lupul made a cross-ice pass to Salei, whose one-timer from the top of the right circle was heading wide when it caromed in off Salo's left arm.

Naslund tied it at 6:15 of the second with his 34th goal - a short back-hander over Gerber's glove after Brendan Morrison set him up in the slot.

Notes: Neither team scored on the power play in the season series, with the visiting team winning all four games. Vancouver was 0-for-12 with the man advantage, Anaheim 0-for-8. ... Petr Sykora returned to the Anaheim lineup after missing Sunday's game at Minnesota. He experienced severe dehydration during last Friday's loss at Columbus - and a rapid heartbeat after it - ending his consecutive game streak at 160. ... The Canucks are 5-3-2-1 since Todd Bertuzzi was suspended for the season. ... Vancouver is 3-for-49 on the power play its last 14 games, and 22nd overall in the league. Last season, the Canucks were third best in the NHL. ..n. The Canucks, who set a franchise record for fewest goals allowed last season (208), will break that mark as long as they don't surrender more than 16 goals in their final two games.

Canucks aim for fifth straight win

The Sports Network
4/2/2004

The San Jose Sharks have secured the Pacific Division title and the second seed in the Western Conference.

Two more wins and the Vancouver Canucks will have a division crown of their own.

Vancouver will try to win its fifth straight while ending San Jose's streak streak at five when the teams meet for the final time this season.

The Canucks appeared destined for second place in the Northwest Division when star forward Todd Bertuzzi was suspended for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs for his hit on Colorado's Steve Moore last month.

After winning just one of the first seven games (1-3-2-1) without Bertuzzi, Vancouver has won four straight to move into a tie with Colorado for the Northwest lead.

Because the Canucks currently have two more wins than the Avalanche, they hold the tiebreaker for the division title and the third seed in the West. Vancouver can secure that spot with wins in its last two games.

``With two games to go, it's in our hands now,'' goaltender Dan Cloutier said. ``It's definitely a good feeling, especially with the way things gave gone recently.''

Vancouver was in a similar situation last year when it lost the division title to Colorado on the final day of the regular season.

``We've put ourselves in a good position,'' Canucks coach Marc Crawford said. ``We know we have a tough game coming up against San Jose. But if we are able to come up with a win, we'll put ourselves in a real nice position for our final game.''

Brendan Morrison set up the tying goal by Markus Naslund and the game-winner by defenseman Sami Salo with 21 seconds left in the third period, lifting Vancouver to a 2-1 victory at Anaheim Wednesday.

The Canucks' four-game win streak has coincided with the return of Cloutier, who has allowed four goals in four starts after missing two games with a hip injury.

Having already clinched the Pacific Division with Dallas' loss to Edmonton, the Sharks didn't let up and secured the second seed in the West with a 3-0 victory at Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 22 shots for his ninth shutout of the season and Alyn McCauley and Niko Dimitrakos scored 29 seconds apart in the second period.

San Jose, 9-1-1 in its last 11, has outscored opponents 16-5 during a five-game win streak.

Last year, the Sharks finished 14th in the West but rebounded this season to establish a franchise record with 102 points and their highest playoff position.

``We've surprised a lot of people, and even ourselves a little bit,'' defenseman Kyle McLaren said. ``Especially coming off last year and not making the playoffs by a fair bit. We thought we had a good team coming into training camp, but we exceeded expectations. Nobody thought we would be battling for first.''

Nabokov has surrendered five goals during a personal four-game win streak.

GO AVS!!! And what's even more important here is that the #4 seed has to face Dallas in the first round while the #3 seed should get Calgary. And while neither would be a fun team to play, nobody wants to face Dallas with Turco playing like he is (before suspension). GO AVS!!
