Power play carries Canucks past Flames

Canadian Press
4/8/2004

VANCOUVER (CP) - The Vancouver power play, which had coughed and wheezed much of the season, got a breath of life as the Canucks scored four power-play goals to beat the Calgary Flames 5-3 to open their NHL Western Conference quarter-final series Wednesday night.

Martin Rucinsky, Sami Salo, Brendan Morrison and Henrik Sedin all scored power with the extra attacker as the Canucks took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Mattias Ohlund scored on a delayed penalty with Canuck goaltender Dan Cloutier out of the net in favour of an extra attacker.

Canuck captain Markus Naslund had two assists on the night.

Chris Simon and Oleg Saprykin scored power-play goals 26 seconds apart in the second period for the Flames, who returned to the playoffs after a seven-year absence. Kryysztof Oliwa also scored for the Flames while Jordan Leopold added a pair of assists.

The Canucks had managed just one power-play goal in 21 chances in the final seven games of the regular season.

Game 2 of the series will be played Friday at GM Place.

Referees Eric Furlatt and Don Koharski called a steady stream of penalties. Vancouver ended up with six power-play chances while the Flames went 2-for-10.

A sellout towel-waving crowd shook GM Place with cheers in the moments before the puck dropped. A group of Flames fans, decked out in red Calgary jerseys and black cowboy hats, were lustily booed.

The Canucks looked to take control of the game when they scored power-play goals less than three minutes apart to build a 2-0 first-period lead.

Rucinsky opened the scoring at 2:34 when he fired a shot that Miikka Kiprusoff stopped, but the puck dribbled past him into the net. Salo then scored on a blast from the point.

The Flames caught fire in the second period.

Simon made it 2-1 at 4:38. A Flames shot had gone over the net, hit the glass and landed in front of the net but Cloutier didn't see it. Simon did and tapped it in.

Saprykin, returning to the lineup after suffering a concussion, tied the game at 5:06 when he skated out from the corner and jammed a puck past Cloutier.

Henrik Sedin made it 3-2 Vancouver at 12:47 when his pass in front of the net bounced off a Flame defenceman and into the net.

Ohlund extended the lead to 4-2 at 17:51 when he beat Kiprusoff with a high, hard shoot to finish a pretty tic-tac-toe play with Morrison and Matt Cooke.

Notes: The Canucks and Flames have met in five playoff series with Calgary winning three. ... Both times Vancouver advanced to the Stanley Cup final - 1982 and 1994 - they beat Calgary in the playoffs. ... The Canucks have won 10 of the 29 playoff series they have played.

Sutter challenges Iginla, Kiprusoff

Canadian Press
4/8/2004

VANCOUVER (CP) - Calgary coach and general manager Darryl Sutter challenged his best players to be better Thursday as the Flames tried to rebound from their opening game loss in the NHL playoffs.

Sutter said both leading scorer Jarome Iginla and goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff have to elevate their play when the series resumes Friday at GM Place.

``Jarome wants to win more than anybody on the ice,'' said Sutter after the Flames practised.

``He just has to remember he's got to use everybody and he's going to have to pay a price to do that. ''

Sutter felt Iginla didn't drive the net enough and battle for space in the Flames 5-3 loss in Wednesday's opening game of the best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final series.

``When Jarome plays a perimeter game he's not a very effective player,'' said Sutter.

``He's a guy that's got to get in the mix. He didn't draw any special checking or anything last night. He has to go out and play his game. He's a big strong power guy.''

Kiprusoff finished the regular season with a scant 1.69 goals-against average, a modern NHL record. But the stringy Finn looked very ordinary against Vancouver, who scored four power-play goals with just 22 shots on net.

``I think he can play better,'' said Sutter.

``If you only give up 22 shots in a game you have to do a better job. It's an old saying but your goaltender is also you best penalty killer.''

Sutter has never been one to cuddle his players. He preaches hard work like a religion and expects everyone to follow his sermons.

Iginla, whose 41 goals led the Flames and left him tied for the NHL goal-scoring lead, confessed he was subpar.

``I can be better,'' he said.

``That wasn't a very good game for myself. I plan on being better. Our whole team ... we're a better team than that. We're a good team. We're going to bounce back and show them we're a good team.''

Although Iginla finished the game a with a plus-one his four shots on goal didn't come until the third period.

``Looking back in certain situations I wasn't good enough,'' he said.

``Maybe I tried too hard or was overly excited or over anxious. I'll learn and be better next game.''

Kiprusoff, who the Flames acquired in a mid-November trade from San Jose, said he has something to prove Friday.

``I'm not happy how I played,'' he said.

``I want to be better. It's a huge game.''

Kiprusoff hasn't appeared in a playoff in three years, but he denied nerves were part of his problem.

``I felt normal,'' he said.

Sutter also wasn't impressed that left-winger Ville Nieminen was called for three penalties, two which resulted in Vancouver power-play goals.

``I thought he had about a four-day rental in that little box over there,'' said Sutter, prompting laughs from the media.

``I'm disappointed he was called for those penalties last night. That's normally not him.''<

Iginla said despite the loss, the Flames head into Game 2 feeling confident.

``We're not that down,'' he said.

``We expected it to be a tough series. We expect Vancouver not to give us anything. There's more in our room.''

Calgary's Shean Donovan shrugged off Sutter's sharp tongue.

``He knows how to get us going,'' said Donovan.

``He's done it all season.''

After Friday the series returns to Calgary with games Sunday and Tuesday.

Dammit. They released 100 tickets to Friday's game today at 3 pm. I just did a check as I forgot to at 3 pm (stupid labs). Did a "best available" search and got a single seat for $116. I figured I'd see if I could find anything cheaper, so I left that one and went up all the price categories, each one showing no tickets available. I just re-checked the $116 price category... sold out.

dammit.

Sens win!

Cherry and MacLean were going off about how they were calling everything and how that's bad. They say that having all these penalties takes away from the game. Granted, it does for now, but I think that if they called it this way all the time, the players would learn what they could and couldn't do, and all this hooking/clutch and grab/etc would stop, opening up the ice and making the game all that much more entertaining.

Flames test Cloutier's cool

The Flames say they will continue to drive the net hard when the series resumes Friday.

VANCOUVER (CP) -- Canucks goaltender Dan Cloutier knows he's going to have to keep his fiery temper in check if the Calgary Flames keep trying to light his fuse by crashing into the Vancouver net during the NHL Western Conference quarter-finals.

Cloutier looked like a bowling pin as Flames forwards knocked him down and tried to roll over him in Vancouver's 5-3 victory Wednesday night that gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Game 2 will be played Friday at GM Place.

"I expected it all along," Cloutier, who made 26 saves, said Thursday.

"If you look at their lineup they have some gritty forwards. They throw a lot of pucks at the net and go for rebounds. I think they're going to keep doing it and it's only going to get worse.

"I just have to keep my cool and worry about stopping the puck and nothing else."

Calgary's Jarome Iginla wasn't trying to hide the strategy.

"That's the idea to try to make it as hard on him as possible," said Iginla. "There's still more. We still didn't test him enough. We have to keep trying to go to the net."

In the past, Cloutier's emotions might have put a dark cloud over his judgement. He would have rapped someone's ankle with his stick or maybe thrown a punch. If his temper was at the boil, he could have given up an easy goal.

With his 28th birthday coming up in two weeks, the Mont Laurier, Que., native is showing more maturity. He was assessed one penalty Wednesday, a questionable interference call when Calgary's Chuck Kobasew fell on him in the crease.

"I've matured in a lot of areas in my game," said Cloutier, who has 30 or more wins in each of the last three seasons.

"That's one of the areas. When you become a No. 1 goalie there's not much room to do things like that because you're playing every night. You don't want to put your team in trouble."

Coach Marc Crawford downplayed the amount of goalie contact, saying it wasn't excessive.

"That's how Calgary plays," he said.

"They're a very aggressive team around the net."

Canucks forward Brendan Morrison, who scored one of Vancouver's four play-power goals and had a pair of assists, said the team is going to have to do a better job of protecting Cloutier.

"Every time they were touched around the net they just fell," said Morrison.

"We have to do a better job of boxing out. We can't let guys in there. He (Cloutier) has matured over the years. He's going to keep his composure, but again we don't want them falling on him."

Defenceman Mattias Ohlund said Cloutier sometimes is sharper after being roughed up.

"Teams know he has a temper but he did a good job," said Ohlund, who had a goal and an assist.

"I think he plays at his best when he's fired up."

Flames players say they'll need to play with more discipline if they hope to win Friday night and return to Calgary for Games 3 and 4 with the series tied.

The strong work ethic which put Calgary in the playoffs for the first time in eight years seemed to take a holiday as the Flames took cheap penalties and managed just two goals on 10 power-play chances in Game 1.

"The first thing is we've got to stay out of the box," muttered centre Craig Conroy.

"You want to get out there and play hard and work and hit, but we were taking bad penalties. We were taking hooking penalties. Lazy, that's the bottom line."

Denis Gauthier said the Flames can't take penalties but also can't lose their edge.

"We're going to have to be a more physical team, put pucks deep and try to put some pressure on them," he said.

"That's going to be the turning point for us if we're able to do that."

Vancouver captain Markus Naslund said the Canucks also can't afford to take the 10 penalties they were called for Wednesday.

"We have to be sharper," said Naslund, who had three assists in Game 1.

"We have to stay out of the box. We were taking way too many penalties. There's always improvements you can make. We're satisfied with the win but we can play better."

Canucks try to hold off Flames in Game 2

With his 28th birthday coming up in two weeks, the Mont Laurier, Que., native is showing more maturity. He was assessed one penalty Wednesday, a questionable interference call when Calgary's Chuck Kobasew fell on him in the crease.

"It doesn't bother me," said Cloutier, who has 30 or more wins in each of the last three seasons.

"It probably would have four or five years ago, but I've worked on it, so that stuff doesn't bother me any more."

Canucks forward Brendan Morrison, who scored one of Vancouver's four play-power goals and had a pair of assists, said the team is going to have to do a better job of protecting Cloutier.

"Every time they were touched around the net they just fell," said Morrison.

Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff will also have to regroup. The five goals he gave up against Vancouver was the most he allowed since losing 5-1 to Detroit back on March 5.

Kiprusoff finished the regular season with a minuscule 1.69 goals against average - a modern NHL record - and Iginla is confident he'll bounce back.

"He's found a way to be outstanding all season," said Iginla.

"He didn't win every game but he found a way to come back. We've got so much confidence in him."
