Had to use organic fungicide on the cantaloupe hoping it works well because I'm so close to harvest!

So by the end of this week I'll be up to 30 QUARTS of pickles made. From 3 freaking cucumber plants. I've sold 10 quarts to neighbors/co-workers and given another 6 quarts to family. They are a HUGE hit. Absolutely crunchy, very good pickle flavor and actually so popular at work that I don't think I'll be able to make enough to satisfy my co-workers cravings.

My brandywines are finally starting to ripen, but I expected that given they are a 100 day plant. My Anaheim peppers are finally getting hot. And I planted fall cabbage, fall romanesco broccoli, fall radishes and fall spinach.

Goal for next summer/fall. 100% vegetables from garden for at least 3 months without any store bought. Given my expansion plans it shouldn't be too difficult.

DeathBUA,

I'd love to have that goal as well but I love asparagus and garlic. Those beds take a long time to really develop and produce. Maybe someday...

Spidey- I love asparagus too and yea it'll take a couple years for those to develop, BUT I have enough garden space to grow enough over veggies in the meanwhile. Very much worthwhile and rewarding, not to mention saving some serious coin.

harvest count so far:

- approx 20 sweet banana peppers
- 30-40 jalapenos
- a dozen green peppers and one yellow
- several bags full of cherry tomatoes
- around 20 of the Heinz 1459 tomatoes
- a dozen green zebra tomatoes

From now until fall or so, every meal I make @ home will contain some of my veggies. Last night I made 2 BLT wraps and they were excellent! This isn't really a recipe but I thought I would post it anyway because it's so easy to throw together

BLT Wrap
---------
- bacon
- sliced tomatoes of your choice (i used cherry in one and green zebra in the other)
- lettuce
- chopped onions
- mayo
- a bit of franks
- a thin line of kraft greek & feta
- chopped green peppers
- ground black pepper

wrapped all inside a whole wheat tortilla. i was missing CHEESE and dill pickles which I think would be excellent in there. a healthy meal and very easy to prepare - perfect if you're a bachelor like me

Hey DeathBUA, I think you'll find better luck with your cantaloupe in our zone if you raise them up off the ground. I used to use coffee cans and the empty pots that the plants originally came in turned upside down. The ground here is too cold at night.

how are the Heinz tomatoes?
they're not bad - i actually bought the flats not knowing what the variety was used for... they are a custom tomato made by Heinz for sauces and canning. i think i will use a bunch of them for a big batch of chili.

They are up off the ground actually. On a 5 foot tall 8 foot long section of fence. I managed to get maybe half the fungus with the first bunch of organic fungicide, going to reapply again today.

oh and this is the last year i'll plant two cherry tomato plants within 3' of any other plant.

actually i think next year i am going to get some rebar wire and put two 6' x 12' leaning sections of it at opposite ends of the garden. i will be the craziest cherry tomato plant nazi ever. any vines going where i don't want them to will be bitchslapped and tied to the rebar.

thats what has me interested. if i can get my hands on some of them, id think theyd make better sauce than regular romas.

I've got a few paste tomatoes (generically called roma) of various heirloom varieties. The are MUCH bigger and more flesh then a regular roma. They're about 6 inches long and about 2 inches across. I'll see if I can find what they are.

San Marzano is a popular line as well. Probably the most popular.

While we're on the topic, these varieties are called paste tomatoes because they are best suited to making...tomato paste or other sauces. They aren't as juicy as a "slicer" type tomato and have much firmer flesh and smaller seed pods. Typically thicker skin as well.

We tried this the other day and OMG it was the best sauce I've ever had. This is where a food mill comes in really handy.

i'd probably give you a ton depending on where you lived!! i'm going to have a lot of these. too many. i have 4 plants of the 1459s and already a bunch i don't know what to do with.

i brought a huge bag of cherry tomatoes in to work and left them on a table in the staff lunchroom. it's nice to be able to get rid of some... i'm only one guy so there's only so many i can eat

My "mystery peppers" are starting to mature.

The "WOW!" heat is still there...but the flavor is fabulous.

This is my second year.

Bush beans I won't do again. Came on strong but fizzled quick. Unimpressed
Pole beans will do again. Japanese Beetles can eat a D, but SEVIN kept them at bay and now producing decently.
Carrots may do again. Totally disease free plants, easy to grow (once get started as they are planted shallow) but they take up a ton of room so probably won't bother
Peppers, fvck them to hell. I had two nice pepper plants grew nice peppers, I picked them three weeks back and these piece of crap are just growing as a house plant now in the backyard, no flowers in sight.
Cucumbers I like but they get diseased sooo fast, some others I know have the same problem. I have three varities. Marketmore76 seems a bit healthier than Straight 8 but the foliage is still going to pot. Next year may fungicide half of them to see if it helps. Marketmore76 taste the best anyway. I eat at least one cucumber a day like a banana.
Cherry tomatoes of course do again. Plants are covered in septoria but are still growing new foliage and my yields are tremendous.
Big Boy Tomato plant will do again, other than carrots its my only duress-free plant (save some curling of leaves upward, seems common with big boy but plant still doing fine)

I have five cherry tomato plants (although one appears to be roma or something--small egg-shaped tomatoes that are maturing as yellow, no idea what it is?) and it's producing a ton of them.

Was amazed how quickly the cukes and tomatoes outgrew the cages. I was pretty diligent early on but then they got totally out of control, so a high cage is best. Most of my vines/leaves are off the ground though because I did quite a bit of tying off and later on bought some bamboo to assist.

If I am looking at the seasonal map for Sydney correctly? I would not give up on the peppers just yet. Depending on the type of peppers you may just be getting into the good producing time. I planted Jalapeños and Red Bells the 1st of spring here (April 1st) the Jalapeños were in full sun the Bells were shaded by tomato plants. The Jalapeños did OK until the really hot weather hit. Now I can pick a 15-20 thumb size every other day off of 3 plants. After I pulled the tomato plants 3 weeks ago the bells started up and there are about 2 dozen showing with 6-8 3 inches across. Up until now I had only gotten 8-10 all season.
Seems to me peppers like long hot spells.

I just put out bush beans for the fall. (crossing fingers)
I pulled up the cucumbers 6 weeks ago. Ate all we wanted and still managed to pickle 30 qts. from 5 plants.
Tomatoes: This has been a good year for us. Gave some away, ate fresh every day lunch and diner for 6 weeks (my parents ate tomato sandwiches for lunch 4 days a week) and still got 20 qts in the freezer. Have pulled some up and replanted 4 Big Boy's so far and will pull the rest next fri. except for the grape tomato. The way it is going I may need a chainsaw to kill it!

I planted (most) in 5 or 55 gallon home made self-watering containers.
3 peppers or 5 cucumbers or 2 tomatoes or 3 squash to each 55 size.
1 tomato to a 5 gallon size.
I will NOT do any more 5 gallon size. I am going to make some more 55 gallon this winter for next spring.
Out of 14 tomato plants 10 in raised beds and 4 in self-watering containers OVER half the tomatoes came from the 4 in the self-watering containers and they tasted as good or better and were larger and juicier.

Just harvested my first watermelon EVER! Lots of cantaloupes are getting close to ready to pick & a lot more watermelons on the way. Have eaten tons of zucchini & given away tons to every neighbor. Just picked beans and picked and picked until both my wife and myself decided our backs were sore. (LOTS of beans.) Inspecting the corn, looks like I can increase the harvest estimate. At least 20 dozen ears.

All my pepper plants - same complaint as above - what beautiful houseplants they look like. Huge, and not a blossom on them. Had 2 hot peppers total, from about as many blossoms. Sick of cucumbers. Lots of acorn & other types of squash getting closer. Herbs are doing great. Tomatoes are still ripening one or two at a time, but a lot of them are starting to get a little lighter in color. Looks like I'll have at least a bushel or two of them within a week or so. (With many more to come afterward.)

I have just the opposite problem with my pepper plants. They're all heavily laden with hot, firey deliciousness.

My wife has a string of jalapenos and one of bright-red serranos hanging up to dry.

Same here. I have more jalepenos, serranos and habeneros than I have any clue what to do with. Going to try to make my own habenero hot sauce.

And the tabasco peppers? There are literally hundreds on one plant.

If you're just now getting melons then you must be pretty far up north. The soil temperature and low temps = not really good for peppers.

I've officially become Gregor Mendel. My heirloom brandywine tomatos cross pollinated with my yellow pear tomatoes. I've literally gotten no yellow pear tomatoes, but I have gotten a bunch of smaller pinkish yellow round tomatoes, still decent size about 1/4 to 1/2 pound, and tasting like a slightly more acidity version of brandywine. I've included a picture of two of them cross sectioned. The top is your traditional brandywine, the bottom is my hybrid

First two cantaloupe picked, one very sweet the other less so.

Tomatos by the bushel load by the end of the week. Radishes will be ready in about a week and a half. Cucumbers although looking sickly still putting out. Over 100+ lbs so far from 3 plants.
