Are you growing vegetables? If so, certainly. If not...no thanks.

At the moment? No, but it's very similar growing techniques and I do want to set up another system so I can grow chili peppers. I want to make my own hot sauce.

Someone is now on the FBI's list.

? How so? I live in Southern California and I'm a legal medical marijuana user. I grow within the legal amount I am allowed to, 6 mature or 12 immature and I only grow 3 plants total. Like I said the growing techniques and what not are very similar to veggies.

That's what they all say.

I think it's even easier to get a medical marijuana card than it is to get a handicapped parking placard...and even more abused.

If dopers want to start a "Pot Growing" thread, then by all means, please do so...but leave this thread to vegetables and such.

I've actually been considering growing hydroponically. Or aquaponically (whatever it's called). Large (very large) tanks of fish underneath the rows and rows of vegetables. The setup I saw had tilapia in the tanks. The water is recirculated from the tanks of fish through large pvc tubing with 1" holes in it for the plants. The plants filtered out the water, removing nitrogen & other nutrients. The water was returned to the tilapia. It was amazing how concentrated the tilapia were in those tanks & growing quite well. And, amazing how well the vegetables were growing - in December, in NY.

This was at a college that researches agriculural methods. Amazingly, in some of their greenhouses, they were able to grow food 11 months out of the year. In NY. Without heat. I know that in the length of growing season BoomerD beats my pants off. Ditto broadband. So, on the occasions that I get a shitload more tomatoes than Boomer, I'm going to mention it. (Also, the first tomato plant I picked from today - 22 tomatoes.) I'm sick of tomatoes.

DrPizza, I have a bubbleponics setup similar to one this guy built in a guide I read. If you want do a search for "roseman bubbleponics" and you should find a thread. It's geared towards cannabis, but the same principles can be applied for veggies(they even sell kits completely assembled advertised for growing veggies). You can build them pretty cheaply. Lights can be had cheap if you don't mind some DIY. There's probably more stuff on this for things less controversial than weed.

Mine would probably be nearly 100% do it yourself. I've seen the prices some of the prefabbed kits cost. Seems that the ONLY profitable thing to grow in such a kit is what you've grown.

Hmmm... I wonder if I have any pics of the setup I observed...

here's some random pics from the growing season. sorry if they aren't resized.... i'll do my best to not imbed them

taken sometime in Aug. peppers in the foreground, tomatoes in the background. as you can see my "florida weave" did little to contain incredibly healthy cherry tomato plants this was also taken with my old crappy phone.

You can make them yourself very cheap. I built my own and it took me a couple hours and less than 50% what it cost to buy one made.

I just ate half of one of my mature serranos... holy jesus fucking christ.

Red? Mine are sweet as hell...and hot.

I've let some of my jalapenos mature to red as well. They don't lose any of their heat, but they also sweeten up nicely.

Melty, that bowl of jalapenos looks like the makings of some jalapeno jelly...

So instead of canning I've been 'sun' drying my tomatoes in the oven. 170 degrees for about 9 hours topped with olive oil, pinch of sugar, pinch of salt and pepper, and fresh chopped sage, rosemary, thyme from my herb garden. Put them in a zip loc bag or use immediately for soup/salad/pasta

Picked my first fall watermelon radish today. Very sharp bite, but considering the hot weather I'm not surprised. My fall broccoli...well it's gonna be close! We've got about 6 weeks before first frost and they are about 8-10 inches high.

ElDorado...try tossing a couple of those serranos on the grill when you BBQ. Completely changes the texture, increases the flavor, and mellows the heat slightly.

That sounds like an awesome idea. Will do next time I BBQ.

wow i love this idea.

what are some other ways of preserving my veggies? (haven't googled it) i have a bunch of sweet banana peppers and jalepenos that i would like to keep for later cooking.

last night i used my green peppers, sweet banana peps and jaleps (along with store-bought red onion) - chopped everything up and added it to a plain Unico garlic spaghetti sauce. delicious! i will never, ever ever be without a veggie garden for this reason... every meal i make, i start with my veggies and my cutting board. i love it

Trust me, the tomatoes that way are amazing Got the idea from Alton Brown book on cooking. Makes your house smell absolutely outstanding. And frozen in a ziploc bag they'll keep for a long long time. We've made pasta with them twice and it was just so flavorful and rich tasting.

Oh and I'm making another batch today.

And before someone asks, no it doesn't matter what size tomato you use, but remember larger tomatoes take longer, and if anyone wants the full recipe just PM me

My tomatoes and peppers are out of control right now. I am getting close to 10 roma tomatoes/day from 2 plants. I only have 1 plant each of jalepeno, sweet pepper, and red bell pepper, but I am getting more than I can use off all of them.

I made some delicious fresh pasta sauce last night. Roma tomatoes, fresh oregano/thyme/basil, and onion all from the garden. The only veggie I used that wasn't from the garden was garlic.

Gonna make some gazpacho tonight with the tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers to go with grilled cheese.

I don't understand how all you guys are still getting fresh vegetables from your gardens like tomatos and peppers and corn. Tomatos and peppers thrive in mid 90 degree weather and cant take temperature changes well. Here in N.E. Kansas, its been in the upper 70's to mid 80's for the past couple weeks with a spike into the upper 80's with evening temps in the 60's and 70's. I still get some small grape tomatoes, but the rest of my tomatoes don't get big anymore (and they were huge in July/early August. How are you guys doing it? I still have a ton of green tomatos on the vine, but they just aren't getting to size and ripening.

mine aren't ripening anymore either. my green peppers are still growing and some cherry tomats still ripening but my larger tomatoes are just big and green. the tomato plants themselves are still very much alive and green but soon they will meet Mr. Sickle.

It's been a super warm summer is my only excuse. I do have heirloom tomato plants so, while not as big as they were, are still the size of baseballs. Whereas in August they were easily softball size. Hell I'm still getting cucumbers every 3-4 days. Fucking things wont die. I mean seriously. I picked 2 cukes this morning and noticed at least a dozen flowers.

Certain other plants, such as my radish and broccoli actually do better in cooler weather and grow fast enough to produce a fall crop.
