The place my wife works wanted to look into this in their 8 person office. They just need 1 main lien coming in that goes to the admin person who then needs the ability to transfer the call to whoever they needed to talk to. And of course all the lines need the ability to make calls.

Vonage said they couldn't do it. They'd have to have each phone get it's own line and they couldn't be directed to the main phone.

Oh well.

I am thinking of trying Vonage, but want to use the Linksys PAP2 adapter which is avail thru Buy.com for $8.99 AR.

I think the way I do this is to order the adapter first, PM someone for a referral second and then third sign up online using referral & specifying that I do not need their adapter? Plan to go with 14.99 plan at start since it has 500 min and you would have to go to over 1200 min before reaching rate of unlimited $24.99 plan.

I am looking for recommendations. If I decide not to stay with plan I think Vonage charges $35 if the adapter is not returned in 14 days. Are all adapters about the same or are some recommended over others?

Well, I can't help you with the adapter, but I'm curious why you want your own? They don't charge a rental fee or anything, and there is no charge if you send it back. Why would you not send it back?

PS...... I have a teenage son that plays a lot of online gaming, such as Neverwinter Nights - Hordes of the Underdark. He is concerned that the voip may eat into some of his bandwidth. We're using comcast cable internet and I plan to use the voip behind the router.
Will he see a noticable reduction in bandwidth when the phone is being used?

I did not want the hassel of mailing back the adpater. Also I have read that the Motorola adapter in some instances has some hum. I think it was the Motorola adapter.

Nope. I can talk on the phone, while downloading several torrents and surfing, and I have no issues. Also, you can use their "bandwith saver" option... it cuts down on the amount of bandwidth needed. Most cable connections can handle something like 9 simultaneous VOIP lines.

I've got Adelphia here...4mb/512k.

Ummm..ok..I guess. Hassle? What would you use it for if you kept it?

Anyway, I have the Motorola, and it makes no noise...physically, or on my phone line.

Thanks for info on bandwidth.

Are you using the standard Vonage adapter? Have you had any problems with it?

Well, I had 3mb/256, but I was paying $54.95/month since I didn't have their cable. It was $5 more month for "Powerlink Premiere" which upped me to 4mb/512k...although I usually hit more like 700 on the upload...

Yeah, I've got the Motorola VT1000V..

I've had no problems at all. I actually have it behind my router, which Vonage doesn't suggest, but it still works fine. I just forwarded a few ports...

At Vonage's web site they have a retail activation were you select any of four different adapters. It also looks like Linksys is coming out with a wireless g router with a built-in adapter. As Insane3D recommended I am leaning toward using the Motorola, but it soumds like I may end getting an RT31P2 instead. Anyway if I get it thru Vonage I don't have to use an MIR.

Just signed up using neonerds referral. It is confirmed, they are now shipping with the RT31P2 router/phone adapter. I am starting with the $15/month service. I am sure this is posted elsewhere, but there is a $30 activation fee and a $10 shipping fee.

I'm wondering what is the preference for the Linksys? It looks like the Motorola is a better unit in that it support QoS, which it doesn't look like the Linksys does. Also, it says the Motorola has the built in router. I wonder if the Linksys is cheaper, so now that they lowered the price of their top tier service, they are tryingto save $$$?

I also wonder if it has to do with what ISP you have? I got the VT1000V when I signed up.

I called Vonage tech support, as I will be setting up my adapter behind a router. On the RT31P2 you just connect it to one of the ethernet ports on your current router and you should be good to go.

They also basically said that the RT31P2 is newer and replaces the VT1000. I believe the RT31P2 also has QOS, but has to be in front of the router. If you use your current router it will be behind (QOS not avail).

It's time to race to put in those PMs to me current Vonage customers. I'm interested in signing up so the first person to PM me gets the referral. The race is on

Got the referral from bockchow, thanks again . From what I've heard so far about the service I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
