Ditto here, but I decided to try it out on $15 plan. If it is good, I will drop my long distance carrier altogether and may also drop call waiting on my regular line. Also I forgot to ask if I can drop regional calling as well. If I do all this it will more than make up the cost of having a second phone number. Then I can gradually work on switching everyone over to the VOIP line and get rid of Verizon, altogether (none too soon.)

Good Luck. It says on their web site:
Transfer your existing phone number from your current telephone service provider to Vonage DigitalVoice(tm). (Available within selected Vonage service areas)

I called Vonage and evidently they can only work in certain area codes that the FCC has regulated. When I look at my Verizon bill I actually pay $1.21 per month for "Number Portability", but yet it's NOT portable to my new Vonage account. What a rip.

I hope it works for you. Please post here if it does.

Looking at Vonage's web page they have a "Letter of Authorization Tool" which when I fill it out it looks like if I use an LOA I can transfer my present number. Has anyone used this and how did it work out?

is there any way to avoid the $29.99 activation fee

first month charges are $68 bux

Startup Costs
(includes first month of service)
Activation Fee $29.99
First Month's Service Charge $24.99
Federal Excise Tax $1.65
Regulatory Recover Fee $1.50
Shipping and Handling $9.95
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Total $68.08

Monthly Service Charge
Monthly Service Charge $24.99
Federal Excise Tax $0.75
Regulatory Recover Fee $1.50
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Total $27.24

edit - packet8 has the same offerings at vonage with 2 mos free, no acivation fees and $60 rebate on the phone via amazon, seems a better deal to me.

search for 8x8 Packet8 Broadband VoIP Service with DTA-310 Phone Adapter
at amazon.com
