I think Chicago office got caught up in the QB arms race. Brees and Flacco signed big deals. Jay was certainly no where as elite as Brees but arguably equal to Flacco. They didn't want to groom a rookie QB and he was "'good enough". And now they are in the same situation as NO, Cinncy, Baltimore, ect with a huge contract for a QB and not getting great results for it.
Over the last few years you've really seen the true dichotomy of quarterback levels.
The uber elite levels of Manning, Brady, and Rodgers. Luck is working his way here.
The really damn good levels of Rivers, Brees and Rothlesburger, Romo
Then the middle range of unpredictable, streaky QB's along the lines of Cutler, Stafford, Ryan, Eli, Flacco, Dalton, Kaepernick, Newton ect.
Then at the bottom is the journeyman/rookie level of Geno Smith, Carr, Bridgewater, McCown, ect.
I think those 9 digit contracts are going to be a lot harder to come by going forward. Or at the very least, heavily incentive based like Kaepernicks.
