Missed call. That's what you call that. Ref messed up.

KT

how do you miss that? honestly? i mean, offsides are sorta judgement calls, but a ball completely changing direction in mid air, how the hell do you miss that... this led DIRECTLY to Spain's goal.

okay, can i get an answer on this?

on the Dutch's last FK, it deflected directly off of Spain and out of bounds..

how the fuck does that become Spain's ball on a goal kick?

Missed call was my assumption.

Congrats Spain, you played some beautiful football this year.

No doubt, it was a blown call. Not so sure about that second part though.

I was trying to figure out whether it was crappy officiating or whether the ref was trying to set a tone, that was never really set.

All I have to say is I am ecstatic it did not go to PKs. That would have been awful, no matter who would have won that.

it went, free kick, missed call, goal kick, down the field, GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLL

you change that goal kick to a corner kick and its a whole different outcome

Eh, not necessarily. Only changes it if they actually do something with the corner, which nobody had really done anything all night, aside from Spain's maybe one chance.

they take :45 off the clock, and Spain no longer has a direct line down the pitch

Glad that Spain won. They played beautiful football the whole tournament. Their goalkeeper played flawlessly and David Villa was clutch the whole tournament.

Many Goal Kicks don't lead to Goals, just like many Corner Kicks don't lead to goals. If you want to blame anything on anyone for Spain winning, blame Robben for absolutely choking this game. He had a multitude of chances and couldn't finish. The same went for Spain. Something had to give and finally Spain got the ball in the back of the net. Game Over!

Spaniards are World Cup Champions!!!

Wow what an ugly final. I watched many games for the first time in my life and loved every minute of it but this final was a disgrace. Both sides flopping and diving then begging for a call. Then the missed call on Robben when he was sprinting towards the goal. Spain definitely played better. Too bad this isn't a best of three for the final.

Not impressed by Spain. The ref was horrible. At least in the last World Cup we got to see Zidane's headbutt skill!

Yeah.....you can't really call that foul on Robben, though. He maintained possession even after the pull from behind. Once the keeper had the ball and took him down clean, then he wanted the call. Now, if he had been like Spain, he would have fallen to the ground and faked a heart attack at the first contact. He didn't and tried to score instead. That's part of what's wrong with soccer and FIFA in general, IMHO.

Until FIFA cracks down on flopping, utilizes some type of instant replay/technology, and makes referees more accountable...the team the flops will have the advantage. In this case, it was Spain. They were clearly the better team, but it's a shame to have bad calls dictate the outcome of the game.

Wow, what a game. 1st half was..well...not the most interesting I've seen. The 2nd and OT more than made up for it.

It's funny. Reading through the thread for this game, posts totally mirror how my friends and I were reacting. I couldn't believe how many yellows were thrown out, and how many reds (or double yellows) were probably deserved. The falcon chest-kick for sure (though it's awesome to watch in replays), and I think a Spaniard body-checked a Dutchman down, someone else got pretty blatantly tripped on a break away, etc...

NED played a very physical game most of the time and cried foul the rest. Eventually, they sorta fucked up Spain's strategy and dragged their play down somewhat out of frustration, retaliation, desperation, etc... That was probably NED's plan to begin with, and it worked pretty well.

I actually think the ref did an OK job overall, though there were definitely a few missed and poorly made calls (some significant ones). I did see some dives, but more hammed-up crying on valid fouls from both sides (probably trying to get the cards pulled). Essentially both teams decided they were going to play a relatively dirty game, so the ref made sure they were equally dirty.

Both team's defenses played well combined with both offenses totally failing to finish. Seriously, Robben should be beating himself up over his failed breakaways and Iniesta needs to learn how to use his left foot. Ultimately Spain scored a clutch goal, and congrats to them for winning. They deserved it for playing the cleaner game (imo, relative to NED) and just being the better team.

Just got back. I went in deciding to cheer on Spain but changed my mind no more than 10 minutes in after all the Spanish diving I saw. Though I admit, the Dutch weren't righteous in that regard either.

I also agree that the officiating was rather poor, that it's better to end with a goal rather than PKs, and that overall this was a poor game.

After seeing it played so poorly that long, I would have rather seen it end by penalty kicks.

Reaction from the crowd in Taipei, Taiwan (Inside a McDonalds, of all places... They set up flat screens and a projector). 5am in the morning... ugh...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl6mh3jpkc4
I started to take the video when Spain started to advance, but my stupid phone camera has this huge lag.. so about a split second into the video, that's when the ball goes in, and the reaction commences.

It seems Taiwanese people rooted for Spain
I rooted for Spain because of Pau Gasol. GO LAKERS!!

K, I gotta go catch my plane! Cya!

Horrible game, but anyone could have predicted that... Spain rules at not letting other teams play

Even yesterdays game was much more worthy than this... 0-1 then 2-1 then 2-3, awesome stuff

Ill just go ahead and pretend the final was Holland vs Brazil, cuz that was easily the best game of the world cup... I hope I dont have to put up with Spain in euro 2012 again with this kind of football

On another note, Forlan got a well deserved "Best Player" award, so there IS some justice here

What's your point? There was an egregious foul in the first half that could, and should, have put the Dutch down in the first half to ten men. You can play woulda shoulda coulda all day, but that does not change the outcome, or even change the fact that Spain was the better team today.

That's funny because Cruyff was praising the Spaniards for their play and he was actually picking them over the Dutch. Just because they do not leave things wide open and go up and down the pitch constantly, does not make them a bad team or even a boring team. I love watching that kind of possession football; Ramos and Iniesta had all kinds of beautiful touches on the ball, as did Van Brommel on the Dutch side. I love that kind of stuff.
