Wow, what a game. 1st half was..well...not the most interesting I've seen. The 2nd and OT more than made up for it.
It's funny. Reading through the thread for this game, posts totally mirror how my friends and I were reacting. I couldn't believe how many yellows were thrown out, and how many reds (or double yellows) were probably deserved. The falcon chest-kick for sure (though it's awesome to watch in replays), and I think a Spaniard body-checked a Dutchman down, someone else got pretty blatantly tripped on a break away, etc...
NED played a very physical game most of the time and cried foul the rest. Eventually, they sorta fucked up Spain's strategy and dragged their play down somewhat out of frustration, retaliation, desperation, etc... That was probably NED's plan to begin with, and it worked pretty well.
I actually think the ref did an OK job overall, though there were definitely a few missed and poorly made calls (some significant ones). I did see some dives, but more hammed-up crying on valid fouls from both sides (probably trying to get the cards pulled). Essentially both teams decided they were going to play a relatively dirty game, so the ref made sure they were equally dirty.
Both team's defenses played well combined with both offenses totally failing to finish. Seriously, Robben should be beating himself up over his failed breakaways and Iniesta needs to learn how to use his left foot. Ultimately Spain scored a clutch goal, and congrats to them for winning. They deserved it for playing the cleaner game (imo, relative to NED) and just being the better team.
