Man that Ryan Howard for all of his strikeouts during the season, he sure is coming up big when it most counts.

Paging Evan Longoria. Mr Longoria, please locate and pick up a red courtesy phone, your World Series is already in progress. Evan Longoria, please pick up a red courtesy phone.

um... anyone else starting to get the chills here?? this is so exciting!!!

I seriously felt a tear coming on after that home run knowing that I might see them win tomorrow.

If you can immediately absorb the $900 you'll never miss it and it's worth its weight in gold for bragging rights to possible history.

this. besides, you can probaly sell it for double what you bought it or even more, now that they won tonights game the value will only go up, should you be foolish enough to do that!!

I'll have it paid off before the credit card is due. I'm not going to turn this into a typical ATOT I make a bazillion dollars a year thread but let's just say the ticket is just a little more than the car payment on my BMW each month.

Let me start off by saying I am a Phillies fan.
With that said, I have accepted the fact that we will most likely chock in the big show. It is what we do. Sorry everybody.

The Phillies wont choke. Tampa Bay is simply going to crush them. It isn't choking if the other team is a hell of a lot better.

A hell of a lot better?? Hahahaha, OMG I love these people picking against the Phillies and doubting their abilities but that is such a ridiculous thing to say.

First off, as of right now the Phillies have earned themselves a WS spot and the Rays have not. Secondly, the Rays are much younger and inexperienced then the Phillies and even though they are hot right now and have all the momentum in their favor, the Phillies are on a roll themselves and have been hitting HRs like the team was built to do. Pitching? Cole Hamels > ANY RAYS PITCHER and Myers/Moyer/Blanton are all good, crafty starters who can matchup with anyone Tampa will throw at them. Hitting? 1-9 the Phillies have the better squad by far with more professional hitters, they can also match Tampa's speed on the bases and had the 2 best stealing percentages EVER the last 2 years. Bullpen? Phillies had the best bullpen in the NL this year and they are not blowing any big leads in the playoffs, not to mention a PERFECT closer.

So I ask again.. a hell of a lot better?? You're either biased, clueless, or trolling. The Phillies should be favored no matter who they face, Phillies had an incredible record winning on the road this year and won 3 post-season road games so I don't care about the AL getting home field advantage. Prepare to eat your baseless words.

Quoted for posterity and imminent humiliation when the Phils get crushed.

I'm not really invested either way. In fact, as a Giants fan I've been rooting for the Phillies all week and it was fantastic to see them crush the Dodgers into a fine dust. Especially last night when it was Bad News Bears style - at the beginning of the movie, not the end.

So, let's break this down, shall we?

First off, as of right now the Phillies have earned themselves a WS spot and the Rays have not.

Well, fair enough. I'm not quite sure how this is totally relevant to this discussion but alright, let's move on. Congrats to the Phils by the way, they played very well.

Secondly, the Rays are much younger and inexperienced then the Phillies and even though they are hot right now and have all the momentum in their favor, the Phillies are on a roll themselves and have been hitting HRs like the team was built to do.

Periods are your friend. Yes, the Rays are younger but one could argue that that only serves to isolate them from the pressure of the playoffs. One could also argue that their youth keeps them energized and motivated on a more consistent basis than an older team.

The Phillies have slugged .431 in the postseason and the Rays have slugged .533 - 100 points higher. 100 points. That's a huge margin. You can't build a team around homeruns - ask the White Sox. The Rays have enough speed to manufacture runs on a pretty consistent basis. With a few notable exceptions, the Rays have speed from top to bottom. They also have more speed on the bench than the Phillies do, plain and simple. Sure the Phillies have turned it on a little bit lately and it's good news that Ryan Howard is trying to use all fields again but I don't think it's going to make much of a difference.

itching? Cole Hamels > ANY RAYS PITCHER and Myers/Moyer/Blanton are all good, crafty starters who can matchup with anyone Tampa will throw at them.

Yes, Cole Hamels is a legitimate ace. You know who else is a legitimate ace? James Shields. Scott Kazmir, when healthy, is absolutely filthy. Matt Garza and Andy Sonnanstine have dominated the entire season. Hell, even Edwin Jackson won something like 14 games this year. There is no way that Blanton/Moyer/Myers stand up to Garza/Sonnanstine/Kazmir. No way.

Hitting? 1-9 the Phillies have the better squad by far with more professional hitters, they can also match Tampa's speed on the bases and had the 2 best stealing percentages EVER the last 2 years.

/boggle

Really? Really, really?

Bullpen? Phillies had the best bullpen in the NL this year and they are not blowing any big leads in the playoffs, not to mention a PERFECT closer.

You know who had the best bullpen in the AL (arguably a tougher league) the Rays. Just because you seemingly haven't heard of their pitching staff doesn't mean they don't exist. JP Howell, David Price, Grant Balfour - the fightingest Australian since Russel Crowe - hell, even Dan Wheeler has been on shutdown mode since Troy Percival got hurt.

Take a step back from your Phillies fan-dom and get a little perspective.

im guessing amaro jr, unfortunately

Ed Wade will probably be available...

Ok, that's an awful joke.

Hee hee. Ed Wade is an awful joke in any context.

But, yeah, evident, I agree the Reuben Jr. is both a likely choice and an unfortunate one.

Gillick got things done. I'm sure his longstanding personal contacts throughout the league helped immeasurably. I hope he reconsiders his retirement.

Lol, McNabb was at the Phillies game after beating the Falcons at the nearby Linc this afternoon. a

In fact, he's still there, now caught by a camera talking to the Rays SS; but he won't do an interview.

Who was the last player before Howard to hit more than one HR in a World Series game?
Answer: LENNY "NAILS" DYKSTRA!

Case in point: now that the Phils have been mentioned in the same breath as Nails so they should win it tonight. Even Met fans agree: It's Lenny Dykstra's fault!

PS: Paging Pena and Longoria, where are you?

PPS: Game 3 was fcking amazing. So glad to see Werth redeem himself last night after getting picked off like a moron in that game at second.

PPPS: Did Blanton really hit a HR? Someone hit me in the ear b/c I must be dreaming.

PPPPS: Brad Lidge is going to pitch 2 innings tonight since he's so well rested. Cole will only have to go 6 Innings! Bad, bad news for the Rays.

One thing I read today.

"I went out to throw a bullpen today," said pitcher Brett Myers, a man who has dreamed of this night for seven seasons. "And I heard one of the greatest things I've heard in a long time.

"It's 4:15 in the afternoon. The Eagles are playing across the street. There's 2 minutes left. And I'm hearing Phillies chants. And that's weird, man. I'm used to hearing Eagles chants all these years. So to hear that, it gave me chills. It told me, 'These people are ready to go.'"

Yeah, they couldn't be more ready, in fact. Not after waiting 28 years for their baseball team to get back into this position. Not after waiting 25 years for ANY of their stinking teams, in any sport, to win a championship.

If anytime is going to be a night for Philadelphia, it's tonight. /fingerscrossed

From ESPN:
Pena and Longoria are hitting .000. They're 0-for-29 with 15 strikeouts and their strike zone is as wide as a stadium concourse. They've been human rally killers. "I'll say this: Our scouting reports have been very accurate," Manuel said.

Okay. I want to know what they figured out that the Red Sox didn't. We only played them 18 times this year. Evan's young and may be having trouble adjusting, but Pena is a veteran. Both are in a very horrible funk. Upton's not doing great, but at least he's showing signs of life.

To be fair, the first poster was totally dismissing what the Rays had despite how well they have played. Even with all the control problems and defensive miscues, the Rays pitchers have managed to get out of most of the jams.

As I've stated before, I'm a Rays and Phils fan, so I should be thrilled with this WS. However, I'm pissed at how the Rays have been playing.

Agreed. It's almost as if Kaz has to pitch a shutout through 6-7 innings like Shields did just to have a hope.

I'm going to watch the whole game and celebrate regardless. I'll be hurting tomorrow, however.

What the Phillies pitchers are doing that the Red Sox didn't was pitch Upton, Longoria and Pena low and away. The Red Sox kept pitching them up and tight. Those guys hammered those pitches and the Red Sox never adjusted.

The other thing is the large number of runners the Ray's pitching put on base. Against the Red Sox, they were lucky to be able to strand them. Luck has run out and the Phillies are able to score.

Hmmmm... Me thinks there are 9 innings in a baseball game.

Me also thinks that bullet points would have been more effective than using all those fucking PS and PPPPPPPPPPPS bullshit... But hey, thats just me

sigh, goddamn it, I hate the city of Philadelphia. I've visited there, and I've never seen a more collective group of angry/rude people in my life (aside from Seoul; Korea, and Boston..those two cities can go fuck themselves too).

This article just cements it.
In spite of the good vibrations, the inner Philadelphian ? the one who cheered when Michael Irvin got carted off the football field with a neck injury ? is always aching to come out in any form. Phillies fans this October are like pit bulls wagging their tails, seemingly rehabilitated until one false move turns them savage.

How else to explain a family member of a Rays? employee holing up in a bathroom stall during Game 3 because Phillies fans were pounding on the door and threatening him? Or a grade-school student getting beer poured on him. Or the seven-year-old granddaughter of Rays manager Joe Maddon being pelted with mustard packets?

I don't mind the team, but most of the fans and most of its citizens can go to hell. The citizens deserve no joy in life. fvck them. *flame suit zipped up and ready to go*
