UT3: It's Real

Epic expands its love affair with Xbox 360. First footage and new details.

by Douglass C. Perry

January 25, 2007 - Punching home a message that Midway is coming to the next-generation with a full stable of goods, the Chicago-based publisher today announced that the game formerly known as Unreal Tournament 2007 is now Unreal Tournament 3. And it's coming to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in the second half of 2007.

Using the Unreal Engine 3 (what other engine would it really use?), Epic's seminal first-person shooter will douse gamers with gorgeous, life-like graphics, arm them with unbelievable futuristic and brutal weaponry, and hurl them into online deathmatches like never before.

Run and gun (and swear like a sailor) like never before in UT3.

The new game comprises a vast number of changes from increased aggressiveness and intelligence in the AI to better, more ridiculously powerful weapons to new characters, game modes, and online improvements. New weapons are highlighted by the long-range Shock Rifle and the shorter range Flack Cannon, and more than two dozen weapons will be ready to wield when UT3 is ready in the second half of 2007.

The new single-player campaign is deeper and more engaging than before, and players will be happy to know that old favorite characters have returned and are joined by several new ones. Epic plans to provide advanced online changes to suit all three platforms, bringing seamless loading, improved matchmaking and co-operative campaign online play. Yes, cooperative online play indeed. Familiar online modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag will be joined by an all-new Warfare mode among others. And PC gamers will be happy to get their sweaty mitts on the bundled Unreal Engine Toolset, enabling them to build their own levels, game types, rules, mods, and more.

We'll have more on Unreal Tournament 3 soon. In the meantime check the new screens and video.

Ah man I knew it! I mean why the heck does one need a PS3 anymore.

Added: Also new video here, got to love how they plug Gears at the end.

Not enough for me to drop $600. Even in light of my love for MGS and Jak.

I just heard from the Video Marketplace team that we have a bunch of new content posted, including a FREE episode of ?Skyland.? Plus, starting today, Lionsgate Studio is now a VM partner:

Here is a list of some of the new content on the Video Marketplace this week:

Skyland (Nicktoons) - Season 1, Episode 1 free until Monday 1/29 at 11:59PM PST
Wild World of Spike
Inconvenient Truth 2007 Academy Award nominated!
Lady in the Water (HD)
Beerfest (HD)
Wickerman (HD)
The Descent (HD)
American Haunting (HD)
See No Evil (HD)
Blair Witch Project (HD)
Requiem for a Dream (HD)
Cecil B. Demented (HD)

And later this week, the following movies will be available:
World Trade Center
Barnyard

Remember, the above content is only available in the U.S. We know you want it in your region (so do we) but we?re not there yet.

Sweet...I've been itching to download a new movie from the service...and I've wanted to see the "The Descent". Looks to be my next purchase!

Wow...they've added quite a few TV shows to the line-up than I knew about. I went to download Skyland (it is free afterall) and started perusing around. They've got Babylon 5 on there! Sweet! Also Dukes of Hazzard.

They need to work on adding more popular shows on there. I really don't know why shows like Lost, Heroes, BSG, or Smallville isn't on there since they fall right into the demographic that MS is shooting for with the 360.

So are the movies rent-only or can you download them too?

Movies are rent-only. You get 14 days from the time you finish downloading to watch it. Once you start watching it, you get 24 hours.

It sucks but it is the rules that was forced on MS by the movie studios from what I understand. Similar to Pay-Per-View or On-Demand.

TV Shows are tied to your account. So you could delete the show from your hard drive after you've purchased it and then go back and download it again for free. Or you could put your profile on a memory card and go over to a friend's house and download it there and watch it.

Well that's nice...one of the things that ticks me off about iTunes is that there is a one-time-only download opportunity - if you accidentally delete it, lose the AAC file in a crash, whatever, it's gone

So how are prices? The price to points conversion looked pretty fair last time I looked, have they gone up any?

I think this console war is over, at least in the United States. Xbox 360 and Wii are the winners, and PS3 is the (relative) loser.

No, they are still the same. 80 points = $1. SD TV shows are going for $2 (160pts) and HD TV shows are going for $3 (240pts).

New HD movies are $6 (480pts)
New SD movies are $4 (320pts)
"Classic" HD movies are $4.50 (360pts)
"Classic" SD movies are $3 (240pts)

It's weird - every store seems to have PS3s in stock, and can't get rid of them. I guess it's hard to have a successful console launch with such lacking launch titles.

Yup, same with the Wiis. I see PS3s stacked to the ceiling everywhere I go, yet no Wiis. Hehehehe...

Too Human comes out of hiding.

It is a week before the show, and we already know the Too Human E3 demo is not what it should be going into E3. We are disappointed and tired. So many technical problems, so many sleepless nights trying to fix so many of these problems, but they never stop coming. I remember speaking to Ray from Bioware the night before the show. He asked me my thoughts on tech and I respond, ?We are going to take some damage.?

Why did we go to the show given this scenario? There are many answers, but I?ll respond simply with we did, and we can?t take it back. I guess we went in with the hope that people could overlook some of the technical issues and see the potential for Too Human. It is, after all, only a demo. We certainly thought that EGM would look on us favorably after seeing the game in a better state previously when they gave us a cover. Ultimately, we were incorrect.

the new trailer for the first time the day before E3 and the boards starting lighting up with thoughts on Too Human, James O?Reilly (Director of Technology), Ken Alguire (Assistant Lead Designer) and myself decided that we would do interviews for all 3 days. James and Ken played, while I talked.

Why? To get every bit of information and feedback we could out of the demo. I would ask what people thought of Too Human after seeing a demo, knowing the response would not likely be favorable. Many people were polite (thank you), some lied and some were blunt. Some saw the potential, which made ?the ice bucket? more tolerable. Hundreds of times we heard criticisms like ?the camera is too far out?, ?the frame rate is bad?, etc ?? It was cold and it hurt a lot. Only this time, the cold didn?t stop for 3 days. We will never forget what it was like.

We knew well before E3 that we would have to go dark and would not show the game for a long time. We knew it would be painful, but in the end worth it. We felt the pain would be worth the gain. We will weather our ?Ice Bucket? and do whatever it takes to make Too Human great.

Since E3 we have not only fixed all of the problems we had going into the show, but we have made sweeping improvements across the board ? multithreading, rendering, significantly better textures, seamless loading ? all aimed at putting the Xbox 360 into overdrive. We have conducted focus tests on the game play, control, art and cameras, all aimed at making the game better. Soon we will start to reveal the story. We went into a very cold place in order to insure that Too Human?s next showing would receive a burning hot reception. Soon you will see this for yourself and our ?ice bucket? experience will be over.

Crackdown from the demo is looking to be a good game (well if you just want to kill people). No way I would have payed $60 for the Halo 3 demo.

Looks like UT 2007's name has been changed to UT 3 and it is now coming to the Xbox 360 (at some point Sony was touting UT 2007 as a Sony exclusive).

Paid, not payed.

Played the Crackdown demo last night. I think it's a cool game but the steering (in car) controls SUCK ASS. Seriously, they need to tighten that sh!t up. I tried the first checkpoint race and said screwit after that. My only other gripe is the cops kept on turning on me. The first safehouse - they kept on shooting at me after I killed all the perpz, then I lost gun points (or whatever it's called) because I pwned them.

Will have to play more though.

Heavy Weapon - meh. Wasn't that impressed. They need to bring an overhead shooter game to Arcade, that would be sweet.

I'll have to admit Crackdown didn't "grab" me like I was hoping. Don't get me wrong...I'm sure if I invested a good bit into the game...I might enjoy it...but for the 30 minutes I played...it wasn't pulling me in. Fired up Gears and was immediately addicted again.

I haven't touched GoW since Rainbow came out. I might have to fire that bad boy up again tonight or something.

Yeah right, you'll turn on GoW and play maybe 5 minutes. Then you'll realize R6 blows it away and will come back

I"ve been having fun playing horrible games gamefly has been sending me. Marvel Ultimate alliance at the moment, star trek legacy this weekend.

I guess I'll be the contrarian of the group for R6 like purbeast0 was the contrarian for the Crackdown demo.

I just couldn't get into R6. I don't know what it was. I just wasn't having fun with it like I was with GoW or Lost Planet multiplayer.
