June 21, 2006 - Nestled within the various Marketplace menus on our Xbox 360 test unit's PartnerNet, we discovered an old-school quarter-devouring distraction. It was Frogger, the staple of greasy pizza shops and sweaty sports arenas everywhere. Its concept is simple. Taking control of a pixilated frog, he's guided across a heavily trafficked road and a river to safety in the bushes on the other side. The adventure isn't without obstacles. Sports cars and semi trucks threaten to squish Frogger into quivering bits. Once across the road, the river can only be navigated across by hopping across a series of moving logs and turtles. Like many of its early arcade predecessors, timing is key for getting high scores, and despite its simple appearance and design the game requires plenty of practice to be successful.
On the Xbox 360, the game remains largely unchanged. Players still move from bottom to top, across the road first, then the river. Power-ups like bonus frogs and bugs will occasionally appear on the roving logs and grassy finish line, which grant extra points when nabbed. Each stage of Frogger requires you to get five frogs, controlled one at a time, across the road and river to occupy five slots on the other side. You can't land in the same end slot more than once, so you'll need to hop back and forth between logs and turtles to get to each one. As you fill the five slots and advance stages, logs and traffic move faster and new obstacles pop up like alligators, snakes, and otters in the water. Special attention also needs to be paid to the turtles, groups of which occasionally dip into the water causing death if you're still riding. In addition to avoiding merciless automobiles, the clock comes into play as well. Take too long and explosive death descends upon you. Time for leaping can be extended by landing a frog in one of the open slots at the screen's top.
The mystery of how a frog can die in water remains unsolved.
For new content, the Xbox 360 version offers enhanced and original visuals, online play, leaderboards, and achievements. Applying the new graphical paint doesn't change anything about the screen size or aspect ratios of the original, merely the appearance. Instead of flat, generally featureless pixels floating across the screen, the new graphics pump in a lot more detail. Puffs of smoke stream from the bulldozers on the road, the logs have a more rounded look with veins of bark apparent and ripples of water in their wake, and apparently the public works department in Frogger is on vacation, since the road is in a serious state of disrepair. Switching up the graphics, which is accomplished through the in-game menu, also switches up the sounds. The new graphics are accompanied by more melodic, pleasant sounds, though hardcore Froggerites might be more inclined to the aural harshness of the original.
In HD Frogger's playable size looks extremely small. Nearly two-thirds of the screen is being taking up by some sort of cosmic background, but after a while it can be overlooked. If you think the original arcade aspect ratio is still too small, there's an option to stretch out the screen, though doings so greatly distorts images onscreen. Other game options include being able to adjust the number of lives you start with, though if changed whatever score you achieve won't be eligible for posting on the leaderboards. Like Joust, XBLA Frogger supports online play with Versus, Versus Speed, or Co-operative games. For fans craving a classic Frogger experience on their sleek Xbox 360, this definitely seems like a complete, faithful package. Look for more as it's scheduled to release later this summer. On our test unit's PartnerNet, which is entirely separate from the retail Marketplace, Frogger cost 400 Microsoft Points to download. Below you'll find the achievements, as well as media straight from the car-dodging classic.
