download Texas Hold'em within the first 48 hours of release and you get it for free.
- sounds like a fair compromise after the change in original plans.

Microsoft isn't bluffing: Log on to Xbox Live® within the first 48 hours after launch and download Texas Hold 'em completely free of charge! This full-featured poker title for Xbox Live Arcade on Xbox 360? will launch on Wednesday, August 23, at 0800 GMT (1:00 A.M. Pacific Time).

For 48 hours only?through 0800 GMT (1:00 A.M. Pacific Time) Friday, August 25?as a special limited-time only promotion, all Xbox Live Gold and Silver members can download the game at no charge.Starting at 0801 GMT (1:01 A.M. Pacific Time) Friday, August 25, Texas Hold 'em will be available for 800 Microsoft Points.

Not only is Texas Hold 'em free to all gamers, it comes equipped with features that can only be found on Xbox 360. Designed to simulate the risk/reward of real poker gameplay, keep gamers honest, and discourage opponents from betting too recklessly, Texas Hold 'em has an innovative new feature called "Persistent Bankroll."

Your virtual bankroll is tied to your gamertag and keeps a running tally of your chip count. If you lose all of your chips in a poker game, you'll have to play lower stakes buy-in games to make back your stack and earn your way to the big tables.

Texas Hold 'em also offers multiplayer support for up to eight gamers, three modes of gameplay (Standard Games, Scenarios, and Tournaments), achievements, extensive online leaderboards and statistics, and high-definition graphics. Enjoy poker night every night with friends, family members, and gamers around the world (please note that this title may not be available in some countries).

There's also going to be a PGR3 themed Uno theme pack.

What a strange marketing idea - 48 hours to get it for free forever, and otherwise 800 points? I guess it's a nice payoff for those of us who subscribed to XBL 'early'.

Despite the huge amount of activity this is going to bring, I bet that XBL is able to handle it. E3 was likely far worse and with far larger files - how big could Texas Hold 'Em be, 20 mega? Looking forward to next Wednesday.

Well, like I said above...it is a nice compromise since MS originally announced that Texas Hold'em would be free through a sponsorship with a casino. They apparently didn't dot all their i's and cross all their t's before making this announcement though and the sponsorship fell through. There was a big backlash when MS announced that they would indeed have to charge for Texas Hold'em.

I don't quite understand videogame poker. If I'm going to spend time playing poker online, I'm going to do it for real money. Even if you don't want to lose a lot of money, can't you just play 0.05/0.10 tables?

Well, playing poker in the comfort of your own home - and having people to fill up a table available 24/7 - will be pretty cool. Add the voice chat, the ability to sit on your couch... I think it's going to be a monster hit.

I don't get it either. There's no fear so why not just bet a ton even on a weak hand? They should allow you to bet Achievements Points or something, so if they are gone, oh well!

Just a heads up, best buy has Tomb Raider and Far Cry for $29.99 now. Use a gamer gift card and get them for $25

Pretty good deals.

I think I'm going to have to give up on SFII until I can get a good arcade stick. I just can't do crap with 360 controller.

When I played this in the arcades, I used to rule as Chun-Li. Now I can't even pull off a Kikouken or Spinning Bird Kick attacks without major frustration. I go on to Live and just get my ass handed to me all the time. Not fun.

Well, if people value their W/L record they won't be doing that, but if they don't then many of those people will be more liberal with their betting. Without the money involved it's pretty much the same as any other online games. You've got nothing to lose in any other online game other than your pride and rank.

I do think it would be cool if you could bet something more substantial. Microsoft points would be cool, but that would then be true betting and opens up a whole can of worms MS isn't likely wanting to open.

Well, technically, they can't even open that can of worms since gambling online is illegal in the USA. They'd have to setup shop overseas before they could do that.

Still, I know some will be put off by the lack of being able to bet real money but card games are also very popular XBLA games. I'm betting (yuk yuk yuk) that we'll see the same for Texas Hold'em.

It takes a little getting used to. I still haven't perfected the Kikouken yet, but it's pretty close.

Now that the 360 is a few months old, how significant is the difference between a Core and a Premium, really ?

Except for old xbox games, which I don't care about, what can the Premium do that the Core can't, purely for xbox 360 games ?

And, I still haven't heard of an xbox 360 game that is a must have, are there going to be some this holiday season ?

Having the HDD and wireless controller is a significant difference alone just from the value perspective. The HDD is 100% necessary for demos, XBLA games, videos, etc. You'd end up spending a ton on memory cards if you don't have one.

Yes.

Gears of War
Saints Row
LEGO Star Wars II (for me at least)
Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Forza Motosport 2
Call of Duty 3

Possibles include:
Enchanted Arms
Test Drive Unlimited
Just Cause
Timeshift
Crackdown
Phantasy Star Universe
Viva Pinata
Fusion Frenzy 2
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 (independent boobie bouncing!)
Rayman
Sonic the Hedgehog

The hard drive is very useful for downloading demos, videos, Live Arcade games, and other Live content. IMO, the demos and Live Arcade games are what give the hard drive the most value. Of course you can always buy the Core and add a HDD later... there may even be a larger HDD available not too long from now anyway. But don't forget that the Core also comes with a wired controller while the Premium comes with a wireless one.

As for a "must have" game. I'm really looking forward to Gears of War. I also have high hopes for Army of Two... I really want some good Live co-op action.

There's no hard drive on the Core, which frankly is rather essential. The Premium is the only way to go. This removes your need to get memory cards for savegames, and when you discover the Xbox Live Marketplace like the rest of us owners have and all of a sudden 20GB is seeming way too small...

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is a must-own on the 360. Gears of War is going to be the holiday release on the Xbox 360.

Table Tennis is awesome. Kameo is an excellent RPG/adventure game. Fight Night Round 3 is a great pick-up party game, and great online. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is a beautiful, fun racer. Dead Rising is incredibly addictive. Chromehounds is supposed to be a great squad-based mech game. Call of Duty 2 is heavily played online. Condemned is freaky as sh!t and awesome for it.

I own but don't really care for Project Gotham Racing 3, Madden NFL 06, and Perfect Dark: Zero.

Well, put it this way, there are rumors that Microsoft is going to kill off the Core system. When you figure that you're only going to really be saving what $60 with getting the hard drive (since you'll need a memory card if you want to actually save anything) then it just isn't worth it in my opinion.

I believe there are some games that are going to require the hard drive, Gears of War might, since they wanted to use it for backloading stages and things like that. Also, you'll probably need the hard drive if you want some of the other features in the future (does the HD-DVD drive require it?), and this way you won't be running out of space to save stuff really quickly. Its also very nice for downloading demos and trailers and things like that.

As for must have games, well what games do you like? Gears of War is probably going to be the biggest title when it finally comes out, but other than that, its going to be 2007 before any really big games come out.

About the memory card..I take it the USB ports won't work with a standard USB card reader, like one that uses SD cards ?

The issue about Core vs Premium for me is, I can get a Core for $199. If there are ever really good 360 games, that is a price I'm willing to pay, if the Core isn't so crippled that it can't play those hypothetical games.

That is what my questions are about, whether a Core is worth it, not whether I should spend another $100 for a Premium. Because I won't spend $100 for a 20g hard drive and a wireless controller that ought to cost $20.

If a Core is useless, I'll forget about the 360 until the Premium costs $200.
