Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta Announced and some new 360 only Halo 2 maps.

Bungie Studios Prepares ?Halo? Nation to Finish the Fight

Groundbreaking worldwide ?Halo 3? public beta and ?Halo 2? maps exclusively for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 coming in spring; first ?Halo 3? TV ad coming this December.

REDMOND, Wash. ? Nov. 15, 2006 ? On the fifth anniversary of the release of the landmark Xbox® video game ?Halo®,? Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie Studios today celebrated the milestone by announcing an exclusive hands-on experience with ?Halo 3,? one of the industry?s most anticipated sequels. The Xbox Live® multiplayer public beta, which is a pre-release version of the multiplayer experience of ?Halo 3,? is scheduled for availability in spring 2007 exclusively on the Xbox 360? video game and entertainment system.

In addition, Microsoft and Bungie confirmed today that consumers will be able to experience the ?Halo? universe this holiday season through a one-time airing of a stirring, 60-second ?Halo 3? teaser ad. And finally it was announced that the new, premium downloadable content for ?Halo 2,? exclusive to Xbox 360, is scheduled for release in spring 2007.

?The ?Halo? Nation has a nearly insatiable desire,? said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of global marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft Corp. ?We hope a taste of advance ?Halo 3? gameplay satisfies some of their appetite as we count down to the game?s launch later in 2007.?

Expanding on everything that has made the ?Halo? franchise so widely recognized, the final version of ?Halo 3? will provide a wealth of technical and gameplay advancements, available only through Xbox 360, the leading next-generation video game entertainment system. Via the Xbox Live multiplayer public beta, a first of its kind for the ?Halo? franchise, gamers will be able to play online via Microsoft?s premier online entertainment network and participate in a pre-release version of the multiplayer experience of ?Halo 3.? This beta also represents an opportunity for gamers worldwide to participate in the development of ?Halo 3.? Through the resulting feedback, Bungie Studios will be able to further refine and hone the end result of ?Halo 3.?

Unveiled earlier this year at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, ?Halo 3? represents the third chapter in the ?Halo? trilogy, an international award-winning action series that grew into a global entertainment phenomenon, selling more than 14.7 million units worldwide, which equals nearly $700 million in sales, and logging in excess of 800 million hours of multiplayer action on Xbox Live.

On Dec. 4, the special 60-second ?Halo 3? advertising spot will be broadcast, one time only, on ESPN?s ?Monday Night Football.? The ad, created by advertising agency McCann Erickson, will provide viewers with a unique and compelling look at Master Chief and the world of ?Halo 3.? It is easily one of the most anticipated ads of the year and promises to be the biggest event in appointment advertising this year. It underscores the innovative approach and driving influence the ?Halo? franchise has commanded. The television spot will also be available for download exclusively for Xbox 360 users via Xbox Live Marketplace.

In addition, gamers who have jumped in to Xbox 360 will be able to join legions of Xbox fans next spring in all-new multiplayer maps for ?Halo 2? available for download through Xbox Live Marketplace. The exclusive ?Halo 2? content will bring new experiences and excitement to the seminal sequel that made entertainment retail history in its first 24 hours ? with $125 million in sales ? and that boasts more than four billion online matches since its release in November 2004.

?Since its original release, ?Halo 2? has redefined online play, delivering superior multiplayer capabilities in addition to an incredible social experience, and nurturing a constantly growing community through Xbox Live,? said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. ?After five years of rabid fan interest in the ?Halo? franchise and with more than 4 million users and counting on Xbox Live worldwide, this is the perfect time to invite fans to join the global ?Halo? phenomenon.?

Next-generation high-definition visuals; enhanced artificial intelligence; an advanced real-time lighting engine; and new weapons, characters and challenges are just a few examples of the evolution of design and technology in ?Halo 3.? These improvements are designed to give gamers an unparalleled experience and tell an even more compelling and engrossing story. Working in concert with Xbox Live on Xbox 360, ?Halo 3? builds on the unique social multiplayer experience of ?Halo 2? and promises to expand the innovative and evolving online gameplay and community of ?Halo 2? on Xbox Live. In this third chapter of the ?Halo? trilogy, Master Chief returns to finish the fight, bringing the epic conflict between the Covenant, the Flood and the entire human race to a dramatic, pulse-pounding climax.

this is a stupid fvcking idea ...

after reading the latest EGM issue with the huge halo 3, and hearing this demo crap, my hopes for halo 3 are slowly diminishing. why the hell would they waste time on putting a demo together, when ...

a. it takes away from development time. demos take time to put together and take away from development time, which can be months. if you've seen the halo 2 bonus dvd they talk about the halo 2 demo for e3 taking away a lot of time from h2 development.

b. why have a demo for a game they wont have any problems selling?

god this is a dumb move. this, on top of the stupid man cannon, not fixing weapon respawns, and not including the pistol, along with graphics that look slightly better than halo2, really make me lose faith in bungie and halo 3.

It's a beta, not a demo. They are releasing a public beta of multiplayer to help find bugs, tweaks, etc... It serves multiple purposes. One, it should actually help the overall development of the game. Some problems simply never appear until a game is being played by thousands of people. Two, assuming it's fun, it's great advertising and helps build hype. Sure, you said that Halo 3 doesn't need it, but then you turned around and said you are losing faith in the game. So maybe it needs more help than you think. Three, if they limit it to Live Gold subscribers it will definitely cause a surge of Live Gold subscribers.

Superman Returns Demo is up on the Marketplace.

Today's XBLA release is supposed to be Defender.....I'm getting really tired of the retro games. It was cute at first but every freaking release lately has been a retro game. I want to play some Small Arms!

I couldn't disagree more with you frankly.

This is a pure marketing move. Likely the demo/beta would have been made anyway for testing purposes; The resources are not the limiting factor. This is to get the hype out, but even more importantly keep MS/360 in the news vs the PS3.

Pure marketing but it will appease the gamers too. I guarantee you it will be one of the most played online games on the 360/live.

that was a given. no matter what bungie does at this point, halo 3 WILL BE the most played game on xbox live, period.

and a public beta is MUCH different than an in house demo. it will take a lot of development time to get this thing out to the public. you cant just throw a demo out there, it has to pass MS' tests and certifications to get up there.

Agreed. Despite the naysayers, it'll still be the most popular game on the XBox 360, by far. Definitely so on Live! There still hasn't been a killer Live! app on the 360. GoW is above average at best. R6:V should be pretty good and I'm sure I'll be playing that a lot, assuming I'll have free time.

to each their own

Halo 2 was an awesome game, but it was so greatly flawed. it was something i didn't notice until I got much better at the game and played with people who were good. It was such a noob-friendly game, and from the looks of Halo 3 so far, it looks like it's going to be even more "noob-friendly" than Halo 2 was.

and to say GoW is just "above average" is a way understatement. that game has so much more strategy to it than any FPS game. i'm playin GoW with the same guys I played Halo 2 with, and these guys and I are having a blast on there with some great matches. 1 of these guys played with played halo 1 professionally so he's really good at these types of games.

H2 still undeniably takes up the vast majority of my time on XBox Live. You have to appeal to the masses rather than the small majority of XBC'ers who were used to Halo 1. It's like the difference between Quake 1 & Quake 2. I equate Q1 = H1, Q2 = H2. Multiplayer was a different style. And despite H2 being a noob friendly game, there's still those who are really good at it, and those who aren't. Doesn't change the skill level of people.

Until GoW comes out with more gametypes, I wouldn't even come close to saying GoW has *much* more strategy than any other FPS game. Why the hell do I want to go around killing 4 other guys using the equivalent of the SMG? In the games I've played, it's (assuming you actually get connected to a game): rush for sniper. Engage other guys. Sniper guy snipes other guys. Blah blah blah. It was fun but I just found myself becoming easily bored, and this was less than 2 hours worth of playing it.

Very much so. I played the hell out of that on XBox and look forward to playing it on Live too.

PS - are you gonna be on GoW tonight online? My night freed up so I should be on...maybe I'm just playing with the wrong people.

Xbox 360 with HD DVD playback lags with Dolby TrueHD audio tracks.

I went to the Xbox forums to report it, but there was already a thread about this audio sync issue, so it's not an isolated problem.

I was really looking forward to the game after playing the demo, but after reading that review, I want it NOW. Can you say 4 player Live co-op?

I've been waiting for the game for a while now. GoW had some fun coop, but R6 is going to bring the real coop fun that I love I want to hurry and pick up my preorder when it comes out, because I have to go on vacation for a few days and I want to spend a little time playing before I go.

Xbox.com : Release Date: 11/21/2006
Ebgames.com: Pre-Release Ships 11/20/06
amazon.com: This item will be released on November 22, 2006

I have a preorder at EBgames, and will call them this weekend to find out for sure.

It LOOKS like we are looking at tuesday at the earliest, and definitely by Wednesday. I noticed that Xbox.com didn't have a set date until this last time I checked unless I am making a mistake.

It's almost here!
