looks liek the high-end ones are hardware complaint:Originally posted by: Acanthus
Volari has introduced three discrete graphics processor that are all software compliant with DirectX9 specification.
software compliant? emulated DX9?
if so
True Hardware DirectX9
All Volari V8 processors employ XGIÂ?s next generation TruShaderÂ? 2.1 Engine, taking vertex and pixel shading to a new level of realism. Combine this with built-in DirectX9 programmability and 8 pixel pipelines, and 3D environments now come alive with cinematic realism and moviestudio caliber graphics. Advanced developers can take advantage of the Volari V8 processorÂ?s fully programmable DirectX9 functions to deliver visual experiences never before seen on the PC
now the question would be if the term "gpu" wasn't a marketing measure of nvidia to get themselfs in front of the competission back in the days, cause they were the only ones with T&L.. before that all were "vpu"'s after that all named their thingys "gpu"'s :beer:Originally posted by: Jeff7

(anyone quantum 3d? voodoo5 5500?)
EDIT forgot the rage MAXX... doesn't matter...
Those weren't technically GPU's either I don't think. The Geforce 256 was the first GPU, to my knowledge, as it did T&L in hardware.

August 31, 1999 marked the introduction of the graphics processing unit (GPU) for the PC industry?the NVIDIA GeForce 256. The technical definition of a GPU is "a single-chip processor with integrated transform, lighting, triangle setup/clipping, and rendering engines that is capable of processing a minimum of 10 million polygons per second."
so does that mean "yes it was a nvidia invention and marketing measure" and they made up the technical definition or is it a "no, it was known before in the professional department"?Originally posted by: Darien

actually the 3d quality on the parhelia was tops too, 16x FAA (fragmentary AA) made/make both Nvidia and ATI look bad in comparision.
of course with openGL 2 coming out that does everything dx9 does but better, a wildcat4 by 3dlabs will decimate anything ATI and Nvidia have to offer.

that would have been the trident xp4. which never showed up for the consumer
although, if trident merged with another company, it might explain why the xp4 never showed up, and also makes this new card very interesting.
