There's been much worse happen to the Sox than losing 4 straight to a better team (like losing 5 straight to Tampa Bay and KC, including that awesome KC sweep). Hell, I'll take even a 5 game regular-season sweep to the Yankees vs. losing 4 straight in the ALCS (d'oh).

It's been really tough for the Sox since they blew their last game before the All-Star break, but there's 5 weeks of baseball left. The Sox greatly overacheived to get to this point, now let's see if they can stop underacheiving and play some better ball. If not, well then they know what the problem is and hopefully they'll try fixing it in the off-season (PITCHING!).

I am not sure you can really say they "overacheived" up until Veritek was hurt a couple of weeks ago the Sox were in first place.
It seems the Red Sox melt down is because of injuries (Veritek, Trot Nixon, Wakefield and Clement) and the fact that their pitching is getting worse instead of better.

I would say their best hope now is to hang in there untill Veritek gets back and then hope they can make a run for the wild card spot, I doubt they can catch the Yankees, but you never know.

Official Boston Massacre II.

I think you are over stating the Boston Massacre thing. The games in the Boston Massacre meant something, the Red Sox went from winning the pennant to lossing it. Yankees were already in first place when the entered Boston this week, so the meaning of the games is very different.

Not that lossing 5 to the Yankees is a good thing, but lets keep some perspective.
September 15-17, 4 games in New York. Then Red Sox end season against Min, Toronto, Tampa and Baltimore. Yankees end it verse Toronto, Tampa, Baltimore and Toronto.

Red Sox had better catch them before then, or else they will be hoping for the wild card.

Sucks to get swept in a 5-game series ... especially in front of your home crowd!

The Red Sox should aim for AL East title because unless the Tigers or the ChiSox [or the Twins] have a complete meltdown, one is winning the AL Central and the other is winning the WC.

I am not sure you are 100% corect on ChiSox or Tigers as wild card team.
1. Twins are only half a game out of the wild card spot right now, ChiSox lead.
2. Red Sox are only 3.5 games out, compared to the 6.5 games out of East lead.

Detroit plays 9 games against Min and ChiSox
ChiSox plays 11 games against Detroit and Min before end of season.
Twins play plays 7 games against Detroit and ChiSox

The RedSox and Yankees only play 4 more times.
This means that Detroit, ChiSox and Twins could be beating up on each other leaving room for the Red Sox to move into the wild card spot.
Of course the Red Sox need to get it together for any chance of this happening.

Right now I'd say it is Detroit or Twins in World Series, especially with the Twins pitching.

Possible but the Mets starting pitching worries me a little (Pedro and Glavine mostly). The pen has been wonderful however.

I'll tell you though once the Yanks get Matsui and Sheffield back (next week I think!) then that lineup will be unstoppable. It could be the most stacked up lineup I have ever seen.

So who the heck was that kid who pitched well for the Yanks yesterday?? All I know is that he is some pitcher that was always overlooked by the Nationals and then somehow shut down those Twinkies...crazy.

Good pitching > good hitting. The Yankees can be easily shut down in a 5 game series by a reasonably decent pitching staff. They are a bully lineup, they sit back and wait for the three-run homer. I'm as big a Yankee fan as there is and I am far from confident.

Twins aren't exactly a powerhouse offense, but it was still an encouraging start.
Another Subway Series would be so awesome, but we're getting a little ahead of ourselves.
Yankees magic # is 18.

Very true but it looks like Oakland will take the AL West and the Yanks typically beat them up. They did well against the Chisox pitching this season and took care of the Tigers pretty convincingly really. They didn't see Johan yet.

We'll see in the postseason and the playoffs are usually a total crapshoot as the team with the best pitching typically wins it with last years World Series being the most perfect example. In fact, the Mets have a great lineup but if they see the Astros in the first round they could be totally shutout by Clemens, Pettitte and Oswalt (who was fantastic yesterday) so you are correct about it being all pitching.

i cant believe torre is kissing up to sheff by putting him on 1B instead of just DH, so that his bat can be in there, instead of Giambi at 1B.

either sheff sits on the bench or DH

Giambi 1b or DH, w/ the guy the got from Pitts to do 1B time.

this better only be a garbage audition... Giambi is waaay better than Sheff at 1b (not saying much)... assuming Giambi is healthy, he better be at 1B if Sheff's bat 'must' be in the lineup.

I say either matsui or sheff sits, rather, sheff sits... matsui DH (slow leftfielder and bad arm) Cabrera switch hitter plays left. Giambi plays 1B.

ah heh, Cano... he's sure fielded a better 2nd base than he did last yr, much better i think... and his hitting, he's assured that what he did last yr was not a fluke.

He was AL Player of the Month for September. He deserved it.

Woot! 3.25 more hours until October baseball in the Bronx! Too bad I have to view a focus group until 9.

I don't see the Yanks even losing one game to Los Tigres. They only lost once to the Tigers this season and that Yankee lineup is ridiculous. Lets see what those young arms of Detroit can do against that lineup.

Jeter = supernatural

i didn't like the umpire helping out Farnsworth when he couldn't find the strike zone, though. that killed any momentum that the Tigers were starting to build. it didn't change the game, but it was a bummer to watch.

Verlander's up tonight and the playoffs jitters are out. Tigers will win Game 2

Let's go Yankees!

Are the same starters that were slated for last night going today? Verlander seemed to run out of steam as his innings went up, but the Yankees ARE notorious for having trouble with good young pitching in the playoffs... should be interesting!

Same starters. Verlander (and I suppose some of the other Tigers) were bitching about the rain out and how he warmed up a bit without knowing the game may be postponed. Whoops!

I still don't see the Tigers winning a game in this series. Would like to see the Tigers win a couple to make it interesting.
