"Yankees Suck" is a timeless Boston tradition that this writer chooses not to partake in. I see nothing wrong with the chant, especially when it's been true lately (since 2000 in the least). A team with the highest payroll in the league does indeed suck if it's underperforming. It's nothing personal against Jeter (he's a great player/captain) but stopping a rivalry chant is just stupid if you think a multimillionaire player is going to be insulted by it.

They'll fall back down to earth, don't worry. Without Wang, they're screwed.

We'll see. Mussina has stepped up and his having his best season in years. Tied for the MLB lead in wins. Nobody expected that from him.
Exactly, no way in hell he can keep up this pace. He'll fall back to earth. Pettite is showing his age and is just ok. Joba has no experience and is a big ?. Though Rivera has been in(h)uman this year, he's probably the only one who is rock solid on that staff.

Ummm, Mussina has changed his whole approach to pitching and it's been working for him all year. There is no reason to think it will suddenly change. He's pitching better than Beckett. Pettitte is just fine. He's the 2nd to last person on the Yankees staff I will worry about after Mo. Joba is not a question mark at all, what are you watching? He's pitched very well all year.
Moose is barely better than Beckett (still has higher WHIP/much lower K/9):

Beckett: 3.98ERA, 4.36 lgERA, 1.158 WHIP, 8.48 K/9, 110 ERA+, 120 IP
Mussina: 3.26ERA, 4.11 lgERA, 1.212 WHIP, 6.01 K/9, 126 ERA+, 121.3 IP

League adjusted ERA is only .25 higher, or 6.08%. 6% better ERA vs Beckett's 2.5 more strikeouts a game is a wash in my book, although Moose's 126 ERA+ means he has pitched better than Beckett in hitter's parks which is impressive (and why I say barely better). Even more impressive is Dice-K's 166 ERA+ (and that's with him down a strikeout/9, and issuing a ton of walks this year).

Pettite is having a decent year I suppose, but like I said just ok. You never know if he's going to give up one run or 10 (I'm sure you remember that game). A 1.29 WHIP is average at best, especially when you're not a strikeout pitcher.

Joba - of course he's a question mark, he's a closer converting to a starter who's only made 9 starts. In addition, he's only pitched 70 innings = far from proven - buy into the hype much? He has a WHIP higher than 1.30 because he has abnormal control issues while giving up as many hits as anyone else. 33 walks over 70 innings? Beckett has issued 25 over 120IP. Moose, 16 over 121.3. Pettitte, 30 over 133. Yes, Joba is a question mark, just because he has pitched his way out of jams doesn't mean he will be able to do that against playoff teams.

Yankees picked up Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte from the Pirates for minor leaguers Jose Tabata, Ross Ohlendord, George Kontos, Phil Coke.

Great move by the Yanks and the Pirates didn't get too much in return. Pittsburgh was asking quite alot for those two but I guess lowered their demands. Tabata is young and filled with potential but has injury issues and apparently is quite the headcase, Ohlendorf is ok and I don't know about Kontos and Coke.

You have to like that deal if you are a Yankee fan. I wonder if Marte who is very good will be the setup man or just rotate that role with Farnsworth who actually has been pretty good lately.

Is this the Official "We try and buy a Championship, but are lucky to make it to one" thread?

How bout dem Rays? It's amazing what a team can do for 1/4 to 1/5 of Steinbrunner's payroll

<sips on the Haterade>

I hope Torre wins a few WS with the Dodgers.

Am I the only one who thinks Joe Morgan is a douche? I can't stand watching the Sunday night games on espn with this guy. He is so blatantly anti-Yankee it's not even funny.

I can't stand red sox play by play guy - he is so damn boring. At least Michael Kay's got some personality. Btw, Ponson is worthless.

Buster Olney is reporting that the Yankees just traded Farnsworth for Pudge Rodriguez.

Text

The Yankees seem to have found a replacement for Jorge Posada.

The Yankees have acquaired catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers. Detroit will get right-handed pitcher Kyle Farnsworth, who played with the Tigers previously in 2005.

Posada, the five-time All-Star catcher, announced he would have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder on Monday.

Posada has struggled with shoulder pain most of the season, weakening his throws and limiting his playing time behind the plate.

On the disabled list for the second time this year, Posada was trying to rehabilitate his shoulder enough to come back as a DH or first baseman this season. But after the Yankees acquired outfielder Xavier Nady in a trade with Pittsburgh on Saturday, they determined it was best for Posada to have surgery now, general manager Brian Cashman said Monday.

This is a move that helps both teams out equally. Posada is out for the season and Pudge with Molina should make an excellent catching duo. The Tigers need bullpen help in the worst way with Zumaya hurt again and they recently took Jones out of the closer roll (correct?) so this helps them out. Cashman did a fine job getting Nady, Marte and now Pudge.

I'll guess they'll just platoon the position though Mussina has said that Molina is the best catcher he's ever thrown to so its safe to assume that Molina will always catch him at least.

He's hitting .226 and the offense needs help. My guess will be that Pudge gets at least 70% of the work back there and Molina is only used to give him a breather when needed.

Yep, I agree. The trade does help both teams as the Tigers demoted Jones and Rodney has not pitched all that well this year. I am wondering if the Tigers are going to use Farns as the closer as that was a role he was used when he was traded from the Braves to the Tigers a couple years ago.

I just listened to the post game show and Girardi was visibly upset with the trade but said Pudge will get almost all of the playing time and Molina will give him a break.

I wonder why Girardi was upset unless this happened with him being out of the loop. It seems like a no-brainer. The Yanks bullpen was overcrowded and they picked up another reliever last week in the trade with the Pirates. Marte can handle the 8th inning role if necessary and so can Veras. They needed a bat and they gave up the one thing they had to spare.

Did you see the interview? His eyes were all red like he had been crying. I guess him and Farns were good friends or something that he didnt want to see him go.

Cashman was just on and said they had an overabundance of RP since they got Marte so it made Farnsworth expendable. He said incase Molina had gone down with an injury he wouldnt know what to do - now they have insurance and a little bit of an offensive upgrade and probably both are equal on defense (Pudge and Molina).

Poor Farnsy... he was in tears during the post game interview at his locker.. Man the media should draw the line somewhere; the gy just got traded and obviously wanted to remain a Yankee. give him some space!!

Props to KF for manning up and doing the whole interview while holding back the tears.
