They'll fall back down to earth, don't worry. Without Wang, they're screwed.
We'll see. Mussina has stepped up and his having his best season in years. Tied for the MLB lead in wins. Nobody expected that from him.
Exactly, no way in hell he can keep up this pace. He'll fall back to earth. Pettite is showing his age and is just ok. Joba has no experience and is a big ?. Though Rivera has been in(h)uman this year, he's probably the only one who is rock solid on that staff.
Ummm, Mussina has changed his whole approach to pitching and it's been working for him all year. There is no reason to think it will suddenly change. He's pitching better than Beckett. Pettitte is just fine. He's the 2nd to last person on the Yankees staff I will worry about after Mo. Joba is not a question mark at all, what are you watching? He's pitched very well all year.
Moose is
barely better than Beckett (still has higher WHIP/much lower K/9):
Beckett: 3.98ERA, 4.36 lgERA, 1.158 WHIP, 8.48 K/9, 110 ERA+, 120 IP
Mussina: 3.26ERA, 4.11 lgERA, 1.212 WHIP, 6.01 K/9, 126 ERA+, 121.3 IP
League adjusted ERA is only .25 higher, or 6.08%. 6% better ERA vs Beckett's 2.5 more strikeouts a game is a wash in my book, although Moose's 126 ERA+ means he has pitched better than Beckett in hitter's parks which is impressive (and why I say barely better). Even more impressive is Dice-K's 166 ERA+ (and that's with him down a strikeout/9, and issuing a ton of walks this year).
Pettite is having a decent year I suppose, but like I said just ok. You never know if he's going to give up one run or 10 (I'm sure you remember that game). A 1.29 WHIP is average at best, especially when you're not a strikeout pitcher.
Joba - of course he's a question mark, he's a closer converting to a starter who's
only made 9 starts. In addition, he's
only pitched 70 innings = far from proven - buy into the hype much? He has a WHIP higher than 1.30 because he has abnormal control issues while giving up as many hits as anyone else. 33 walks over 70 innings? Beckett has issued 25 over 120IP. Moose, 16 over 121.3. Pettitte, 30 over 133. Yes, Joba is a question mark, just because he has pitched his way out of jams doesn't mean he will be able to do that against playoff teams.
