Thanks to myAmex at the wallet for the info about the $35 off anything over $250 if you pay with a Dell Preffered Accout (apply online in minutes). There is a coupon code for this.

So how does it work? What's the hassle/catch? is it another credit card bill to pay every month?

LOL, it can be. They send you a bill each month. Not bad if you pay it off every month. It is bad if you do otherwise. You'll have some kind of minimum payment, like a credit card and they charge some kind of interest I'm sure.

Just got a Dimension 8400 with Pentium 640, ATI X300SE, 512 megs RAM, 80 gig HD, eitc for $474. It came with Office 2003, which should fetch about $100 on ebay. Not too shabby for $374 if everything goes well, IMHO.

The nice thing is, I just sold the $340 Dimension 4700 I ordered a couple days for $500, so I'm essentially getting it for $214, assuming I manage to unload Office 2K3 for $100

BTW, I have not seen this posted at FW yet. If they find out you can forget getting any deals.

nope
It's in deal discussion and has petered out from the original deal so I don't think too many people are looking at it.

Hardware question on the 4700. Dell site lists 2 5.25" bays and 1 3.5" bay. Their site will let you add 2 cd/dvd drives, a floppy, and a hdd which in my mind means more bays than they are indicating. The picture seems to confirm the specs though. Is the HDD on this mounted to the case somewhere and not in a bay?

ya, IIRC dell harddrives are mounted vertically inside the case

Yes, they are mounted vertically and there is space for 2 drives.

This is for the 4700 series

Not necessarily. Newer 8300 and 8400 models are in a bay not mounted vertically like in older system, like an XPS T series (older pent3-based system).

This is a good question.

Just wondering, is there any way to hack the 8400 BIOS to enable some overclocking options?

One more thing - can somebody tell me what those X300SE cards that come with the 8400 look like? Or, better yet, post a picture?

No. You should understand it's not the BIOS that gives overclocking ability, it's a function of the clock generator chip used. The BIOS is merely an interface to controlling the clock generator. The 8400 happens to have a clock generator on it that allows 1MHz steps, but there's no easy way to control it. CPUFSB can adjust it, but the chip isn't directly supported and changing FSB speed generally results in a lock up since most overclocking steps are in the 1200-1600MHz FSB range. You can play with it, but good luck.

Most of the other series of systems do NOT have clock generators that allow 1MHz steps, just 100MHz, 133MHz and 200MHz (@ QDR = 400MHz FSB, 533MHz FSB, 800MHz FSB).

Alright, just bought these two. I have seen cheaper, but not that I could get in my cart... I am after the > 3ghz and 1gb ram. Also prefer 8400's.
Which one should I keep and which one should I sell/cancel? And if I sell it, what's a reasonable price to ask?
