4700C are nice systems, a little more expensive than 4700's. They are SFF, they can make excellent HTPC's. I'd love to have one to replace my big bulky 8100 I have as an HTCP. However, I recommend getting one with the 64MB X300 card w/TV output if you want to hook it up to your TV. DVD-ROM is nice too, and these are the slim drives, not a normal 5.25in drive.

WOW - somebody just dumped/lost a decent system ... sound worthwhile?( best I've seen in 2 days ... )

Dimension 8400, 640 processor (64 bit 3.2G), XP Pro, 1GB (only 400MHz), 160 SATA, DVD and DVD +-RW DL, MS Works (no resale ) Also the cheape 128MB ATI X300 SE PCIe card

Strongly considering it. In the esteemed opinion of the experienced script-buyers, does this sound any good or should I hold out for late tonight?

EDIT: $694. DUHH. Useful info to forget!

Straubs...
I would keep the first one. The dual drives for burning are nice, but a dvd rom is cheap and I'd take the 160G HD over 80g for $50 anytime.

Tishoo...
It doesn't matter. You can call MS and get a cd to allow you to use the OS onn any computer for $20. I believe the responder was incorrect though. I believe they come with OEM restore disk which is proprietary to the original equipment in that computer. It is worth the cost to get the full OS. Just make sure you have the KEY that is on the sticker (usually stuck on the door) to install it.

g8watrebel: the key is specific to the type of media (OEM, Retail, Corp, etc)... for example, the key won't work with a retail copy of WinXP.

Look at what just zipped by:

I sent you this in a PM reply, but this would probably help others:

My advice is to just pay for it and wait until Dell sends you a declined payment notification... or just call them Monday if you don't receive a problem email.

Sorry to quote myself but I forgot to add that even though its only $299 its still free shipping. So that makes it even more sweet. I am giving it away because I need slightly better specs.

Thanks if you help

Yeah - as I understand it, they're (Dell is) very understanding with order changes and stuff. I'd order it and change payment method in a couple of days if necessary. They prolly won't charge your card until shipped anyway! (IMHO, but I may be wrong!)

BTW folks, thanks for ALL the help after my incessant questions earlier today, I've got a couple of systemsjust like I need in my cart now ...

You folks rock! I wonder why I only lurked the forums for so long

more cheap systems popped up right now:

$349.00 Dimension 8400 P4-3200 Windows® XP Home 80 G (I) 7200RPM 512 DVD  128MB PCI Express ATI Radeon X300 SE 56 MiniTower
$379.00 Dimension 8400 P4-3200 Windows® XP Home  80 G (I) 7200RPM 1000 CDRW DVD 128MB PCI Express ATI Radeon X300 SE 56 MiniTower

IMO, the 3.2GHz is the sweet spot since most seem to have 3.4GHz chips inside. I received my "3.2GHz" 8400 today and it also had a 3.4GHz chip installed inside.

PXC, you didnt reply to my pm...could you please explain what you mean...do you mean give them false info and try correcting it later...because dell has one of the worst seller ratings....

No, i did NOT suggest giving false information. I suggested that you go through checkout even if the payment will be denied. You can always call Monday and "fix" it.

Unless you're a minor, you probably have some type of debit card or credit card.

(to WDK) Processor/model number? If that's a 6xx series 8400, I would have jumped on it, I paid 15 less than that for a 640, but only 160GB and the basic 128MB PCI Express.

Goes to show, you can browse forever, pick and buy a system, and then a better deal turns up

/had to do this 30 times in the last month for clients.
Were you doing a clean install using the recovery CD on the PC it came with?

I heard that M$ recently announced it was putting something in place for big OEM activations to stop piracy. I guess this was it.

Well, the deals end tonight anyways, so it wouldn't matter if you kept it in your cart until tomorrow:

"We've got what you're looking for ... up to an additional $150 off Dimension & Inspiron systems! Select refurbished models. LAST DAY"
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/...men_burst1_tiers?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh

You won't get the same deal tomorrow... others have tried that before. When it expires tonight, that's pretty much it until Dell does it again.
