I've never seen so many people so giddy in getting refurb machines. Any of you have machines failed yet?

I filled out the transfer form but could not schedule to get the machine fixed until the "system updated". I called tonight and spoke with someone else after getting a very confusing e-mail from Dell. I sent in a "displeasure" e-mail more just to get it off my chest. The reply stated that they had clasified my system as LOST (sound famiar bamacre ?).

It turns out that they had "forgotten" 2 digits on the end of the UPS tracking number on my invoice and when they tried to track the system it came back as an invalid number. So they marked it as lost. Well, the person I spoke with tonight seems to know what they are doing but I have to wait another 24 hours to find out. Hopefully tomorrow night I can call Tech support, verify that teh drive is bad (again) and get someone out here to fix it.

You know, if I hadn't picked this up for $150 this would all really suck.
I feel your pain. Dell support really, really, really sucks. I just spent most of the day trying to get a replacement for a D400 notebook I ordered through outlet last week. Got it yesterday and found that the plastic around the touch pad was popped up about a 1/4 of an inch and the two buttons were stuck. Looks like they did a poor job of assembly. No sign of damage in transit and this defect would not have been caused by shipping damaged. Although it had refurb sticker it appeared to be brand new. Since I have had bad experiences previously with Dell email and phone support I decided to do online chat with customer care. They said I needed to contact tech support. I chat with tech support and they say I need to contact customer care. I called customer care and waited on hold for about an hour. They again told me to contact tech support. I raised a ruckus and they sent me to a CC manager. After explaining to her she said she would call tech support and get me back on the line to resolve the problem. She calls back in about 20 minutes with a tech support guy on the line. I explain the problem and he wants to send a tech out to repair. I say no way. Send me a replacement or take this one back and give me a refund. I'm not accepting a repair on a PC they just sent me that is defective. He talks to his manager and agrees to send me a replacement. Tech manager talks to me and asks for rating for a survey and asks what he can do to improve his service to me - DOH - let me call a knowledgable tech directly next time I have a problem like this. He gives up cause he can't do that. The only bright spot was that the nice CC manager stayed on the line all this time to make sure I got my problem resolved. She also complained to the tech manager that they are the ones to send out a replacement but he says that customer care should send out a replacement during the total customer satisfaction 14 / 21 day period. What a mess - they can't even agree on who should be doing what in a situation like this. I keep buying Dells hoping that I will never have to contact support for any problems.

Good luck if you receive a defective computer from Dell.

Nope. And most are in new or near new condition. Just be smart and don't order older models. For example, if you order a refurb 8400 with a P4 630, it has likely seen little or no use. Order one with a P4 530, chances are it was used and returned/repaired. Make sure to stick to the newer models and newer configurations.

bamacre, Did you research 2800 auctions or are you going to part it out? Checking completed auctions, the only recent ones that sold went for about $2450-$2700 plus shipping.

Although none of them had as many drives as yours did.

i wouldnt spend all my life savings on investing on the PE's. granted its cheap as hell, but anything but the $5-$100 420sc or 1420 i don't think will have that many people looking for them on ebay, of course unless you find another medium to sell these besides online auction, then there will be tons of profits to be made.

I say part it out.

Selling it as a whole might garner some attention from some countries on a list made to ensure they dont get their hands on computers like that one

I have ordered quite a few refurbs from Dell during the past year or so. Most of them appeared to be new and I have had very few problems. The problems I do have ended up like the saga I described above.

Sounds good to me, if it sells for $2700, I'll be fine. I thought I'd take a gamble on one of these.

If you guys want to find a good deal, I suggest going to bed early, waking up around 3am, and going back to bed after buying. Scripters are killing the inventory during the day. I found 6 early this morning, some 4700's, and some 4600's, nothing worth bragging about though.

There is a new 15% off coupon posted on fw.

is there a noticeable difference around 3am? I tried a couple of times last week cuz I fell asleep on the couch and didn't have any luck. It was probably cuz I kept passing out.

Noticeable? Yup.

For one, you'll notice these little noob scripters keep their oh-so-precious scripts running, and then the systems fall back into inventory after 15 min's, because the little kiddies are busy dreaming about Britney Spears

i paid $500 for an 8400 with standard stuff (p4 540, xp home, 80gb hd, 1 gb 400 hz mem, 128 mb vid card, dvdrom, cdrw, modem).

they send me a weeny little 3000 instead.

the replacement they sent is nicely upgraded:
p4 640, xp pro, 250 gb hd, dvdrw, cdrw, 1 gb 400 mhz mem, 128 mb vid card, modem, usb key

i looked at my account and they have that listed there as $1800 bucks. i just got the new system on tues and sent the old one out today. i assume that charge will disappear?

also, the detailed bill is downright funny. it has unit prices for the components.
$333 for the floppy drive
$440 for the ram
$1.70 for the mouse
$12 for the case
$439 for the cpu

yeah i received a replacement XPS gen 4 system that was outrageuously inferior to my original order, the replacement computer they listed was for 4500 dollars too, i was on phone with BOTH tech support and india support in order to get them to let me switch the processor myself (3.46EE / 3.8 570) and video card (x850XT / 6800 vanilla)

333 for a floppy? DAYM! that must be a floppy drive made of 24K PURE GOLD
