My first post. (But I've been lurking for a long time) I have a couple of hopefully quick questions. Would any of these cheap dell rigs satisfy any of you as your everyday computer?

Absolutely! The only thing you might need to upgrade a little is the video card, though, if you're getting by fine with a GF3, this X300 would be roughly equivolent.

Yes I need to know...how good are the x300 ses compared to ti4200s? THanks.

He just said they're pretty equivalent...

No, it's roughly equivolent to a GF3. A GF4 is a significantly better video card than the X300 especially for older games. The X300SE performs pretty consistently 10% lower than a 9200 and a 9200 gets trounced massively by a 4600. I mean, heck, the 9200 is an update on the 8500 which was meant to compete with the GF3.

Thanks for the replies. I'm still a bit torn. Can anyone tell me the difference between the 4700's and the 8400's? Why are the 8400's more expensive than the 4700's. Seems like a lot of the same components are in both.

Maybe I'll see if I can pick up something a little better for a little more $ later tonight after work. (and if I can get someone to buy the other system I bought earlier).

Thanks again everyone.

Its because you get $100 deal off 4700s and only $50 off 8400s.

If you're fine spending a little more, get a $499 4700 Outrageous Deal with a free 17" LCD monitor and upgrade it to a 1704FP for $29.

The only difference is that Dell reserves some of the higher end performance parts for their "performance" line, so these systems carry a premium right off the bat for the privelige of being able to choose. With equal specs, they'll be equal computers though.

Bought 6 computers yesterday.... two more today!

Hope these sell! Dell outlet is like a friggin' gambling habit. I'm looking at 2,000 airline miles on top of any ebay profit.

The 8400's have a better motherboard, psu, and maybe a slighly bigger case. Not 100% positive though, I haven't cracked open a 4700 yet.

Are you buying to keep or resell? If keep, it's a fantastic deal. If reselling, it may not be as hot.

It's to keep for myself, because I'm thinking of building a computer.. However this deal comes about $250 shy of what I was thinking about spending... How much is the 256MB Nvidia GeForce 6800 GTO Graphics Card worth? Maybe that will help me make up my mind. For my build I was thinking of either a 6600GT or the X800XL... Thanks for any comments.

EDIT: Any comments on how this 6800 GT would compare to the cards I am thinking about getting. I'm going to do a quick web search.. but I'm afraid the rig will disappear from my cart.. Thanks for any help.

Are most people ebaying these? I've bought 4 systems so far, keeping and using one now, other 3 i'm gonna try to sell locally. I have a feeling that ebay is gonna be over flooded with these.

The 6800 GTO is only available in Dell systems. It's faster than a 6800 "Vanilla," but not quite as fast as the 6800 GT. I've sold one on ebay, pulled from an 8400, for $360. It's a very nice card, faster than the 6600 you mentioned, but a little slower than that x800 XL.

Out of curiosity, was the P4 3.0ghz model 630? Those are the new ones supporting 64bit.

I've sold similiar systems on ebay for just over a grand, so I'd say it's a nice system for that price. Like I said the video card alone is almost half of what you are paying.

Not that I know of. If you need DVI, I'd pick one with that x300 se card.
